General :: Logging Everything Displayed At Boot?

Jul 13, 2011

Is there a way to get Linux to log all of the output that you see on the screen at boot?

It would sure beat having to dig through all of the different log files trying to find what was seen while it was booting.

General :: Laptop Logging Out Of Window Manager A Few Minutes After Boot Up And Login

Sep 1, 2010

I have a troubling issue. I log into Linux Mint 9 (fully up-to-date) on my Samsung Q320 laptop with power connected and after a few minutes it seems like the entire X session dies, I am logged out, all processes are killed and I am presented with the normal GDM login screen. When I first installed Linux Mint, this never happened. I have the NVidia closed-source driver installed and when the system logs me out, it immediately restarts X loading the NVidia driver which flashes the logo on screen. This all happens instantaneously, so it is not a reboot of the machine, just a restart of the display manager it seems.

There does not seem to be any cause for this. I have disabled all screen saver and power management settings that may lead my system to auto-logout of Gnome. The system log doesn't indicate anything unusual happening. Confused about where to to take it from here bar and fresh install of the OS. Perhaps there are some X11 logs I should be checking.

Update: Moved to Ubuntu 10.10 and its recommended NVidia driver and have not experienced this problem since.

My pc went kaput a while ago and I've been using my friends laptop for the mean time. The HDD is having issues so I've been running ubuntu 10.04 on a live 8gb flash with persistence. Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot - Grub Kernel Selection Displayed - Freeze After 3 Sec

Jul 31, 2011

I locked the screen, came back, typed the password, screen remained black, though cursor was visible and moving. Nothing I could do to rejuvenate the screen. Had to switch to tty6, sudo shutdown -r now. Then, on reboot obtained kernel selection, it proceeded to displaying kernel messages, but froze on sdb, after 3 secs. I figured it was the usb, so turned off, removed usb cables to external hard drives, but again it froze saying something about firewire mouse, the mouse is also usb. I tried several times, but no matter what kernel I chose, I couldn't get it to boot. So I loaded puppy live cd, but now it can't access some parts of the disk. I was running utorrent and the folder with partially downloaded files can be accessed but there's nothing there (there was), and some folders can't be accessed at all.

Debian :: Time Displayed Incorrectly After Win7 Duel Boot Setup

Sep 29, 2010

I believe a windows7 addition to a multiboot system has buggered up the time displayed on two other debian installations on the same computer, a X86_64 and an AMD64 respectively. I'm running unstable on the two Debian installations but #dpkg-reconfigure tzdata can't fix the problem. At the moment the local time is displayed as 15:59 when in fact it is 19:59 and UTC is displaying the correct local time. (19:59) when it should be 23:59 I'm sure this is related to something win7 did, because I only noticed it after the additionalinstallation. I just don't know how to change things back like they were.

OpenSUSE Install :: Removing Boot Loader Information / 2nd Grub Screen Does Not Get Displayed?

Jun 11, 2011

When openSUSE was installed, GRUB information was installed in the Extended partition rather than in the MBR.

I have a triple boot system: Windows XP Pro, openSUSE, and another popular distro on Linux. The other distro put GRUB info in MBR. Now when I boot up it goes to member first. If I select openSUSE, the GRUB info in the extended partion is accessed and a 2nd selection screen is displayed.

I tried reloading the GRUB data for openSUSE selceting to install it in MBR but this does not seem to work.

How do I get rid of the GRUB stuff in the extended partition so that the 2nd GRUB screen does not get displayed?

Ubuntu :: Disk Failure Or Virus - Unable To Boot Up - Lot Of Error Messages Displayed

Last night when I turned on my lap top (5 year old Acer TravelMate 4650), it was not able to boot up (10.04 LTS). No system files could be read and a lot of error messages was displayed. In fact, it has done a few checks for disk error lately during boot up, but no further warnings given. I gave up recovering, and simply re-installed Ubntu 10.04. I was wondering if this could be related to a virus attack?

General :: Invalid Size Displayed For SSD?

Dec 11, 2010

I have an 80GB Intel X25-M SSD drive installed on a Linux box running Debian 5.0. The file system on the SSD is ext4. I've had no problems with the drive, and have been using it for quite some time as both swap file storage as well as a place to store a few large database files which require random access.

However, I noticed this odd size readout from ls:

> ls -lh /ssd
total 34G
-rwx------ 1 root root 23G 2010-12-11 18:00 file1.dat
-rwx------ 1 root root 22G 2010-12-11 18:00 file2.dat

I changed the names of the files here for security reasons, but other than that this is exactly what ls has output. Obviously, the total size readout is incorrect.

Here is the corresponding output from df

> df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 74G 35G 36G 50% /ssd

Despite this incorrect readout, the drive seems to be working fine, and diagnostic utilities turned up nothing wrong with the drive. Is this some sort of known bug in ext4, or is it more likely there's something physically wrong with the drive?

General :: Why Internet Pages Suddenly Not Displayed Properly

May 7, 2010

I have linux firefox installed on my notebook, and after having a bit of a problem with it, I did a full factory reset back to all the original settings. Now when I connect to the internet, some of the pages now are not displayed properly. For instance, when visiting E-bay, the listings look fine, but my E-bay page is all listed down the page, (if that makes sense) and I cannot look at any of the photos. MSN is also, how can I put this, spread out across the page. I have done a live update to see if that makes a difference, but no joy.

General :: Is There Any Known Harm In Logging In As Root?

Mar 25, 2010

I am pondering on what would be any implications in logging in via SSH as root?Surely SSH is safe or am I kidding myself and falling for the unwary ethic of logging into a remote Linux box as root?I discovered some open ports remotely on the linux box, and decided to login as root to edit a configuration file to shut off the ports, hence my questioning in whether logging in as root...another point, since SSH is 'supposedly secure', there should not be any implications or am I kidding myself!??? Would it be better to login as normal user then su from there?

Ok, to make things even more interesting, what if its a bog standard generic linux distribution with no suid programs etc, then what happens...take that out of the picture, and say, for editing a configuration file...hackers are not going to see that are they, otherwise by the sound of the answers, it is putting an impression that hackers can see the traffic the minute you login as root?! Otherwise why bother using SSH? I mean, surely, SSH was designed to replace telnet and thereby increase protection...as we all know back in the early 90's before the internet became publicly available, that there was indeed sysadmins dialing in to private networks or telnet'ting into a remote system as root....
