Ubuntu :: LXDE Panel No Longer Stays On Top Of All Windows?
Dec 7, 2010
I'm using LXDE and everything has been fine up until yesterday something strange happened. My panel no longer stays on top of everything. Whatever window I have open when dragged will be over it. I want the panel to go back to how it was but none of the settings seem to fix the problem. I went into the panel settings and I tried reserve space and the dock panel option but to no avail. how to restore it to being on top of everything?

I have installed Unbuntu on recommendation from two users to get the USGS ISIS program to run on it when OTHER versions of Linux seems to have issuyes..not necessariliy LANY edition of Linux either ... imho after two full months of trying to get USGS and ASU to help give me honest geo-referenced and map-aligned data of all 10 bands each IR image has from Odyssey.. NasaView opens and gives individual bands..but...geo-referencing and map-alignment only ISIS can do.
I finally got it to work when two Ubuntu users got the main lib of ubuntu think certain old libraries are there when not. I think...worked anyhoo the ISIS commands worked...but now...the OUTPUT of the commands are INACCESSABILE! [URL] The above topic is where you'll read about the two month attempt and also see the Ubuntu rescue. But now the PLACE folders open for a VERY VERY short time about 2-3 seconds, if that, then shuts down again. From the Home terminal I got this list
[Code]....
As you may guess correctly everything between Music and Pictures in the listing is THE stuff produced by the output of the ISIS program made FOR Linux systems. Which One? Well Suse 10 and above not supported anymore and there are others. So I don't know what to do. I thought del meant delete in ANY language...guess not. What's up and how can I delete these files from the Home folder at least so it STAYS OPEN?

I installed lxde for my old P2 450 system but the er.. panel? I guess? Is removed where everything is. Is there a way to get it back? It happens everytime after the second login. Even happened in 9.10 if I remember correctly. (I now have lucid). For reference: [URL] (the bottom thing with the clock, etc. )

I haven't got Lubuntu as such, I've installed LXDE to try it out with Ubuntu 11.04 sometimes. For it to be practical for me I need the battery icon and Network Manager on the panel. I'm assuming this can be done easily enough as Linux Mint LXDE has got it, or Network Manager at least. i need NM to easily start my Mobile Broadband dongle's connection. Also, can touchpad tapping be turned off in LXDE, and how? I have it set up to have no tapping in regular Ubuntu but this is undone when I boot LXDE.

Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.
I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.
Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.
* more or less solved. still not exactly what I want but it works, mostly.

Bizarrest thing after swapping in my HDD from an old laptop into a new one. My LXDE panel temperature display is showing "-273," AKA absolute zero in celcius. I've done a bit of googling for lxde temp sensor, and most of the discussions I saw referred to installing lm-sensors, which apparently I did not yet have, although on my old laptop the temperature was shown correctly. I believe the automatic sensor location is off and I need to give it the correct location manually. I am unsure of how to do that, and it makes sense that it's hardware specific. After installing lm-sensors, I saw that sensors-detect provides me with a list of the correct temp sensors in my computer, but I'm unsure how to save those results so the computer can use them.

Installed Debian 8 Lxde desktop yesterday. All worked fine post install. Executed following two commands to make system up to date:-
Code: Select allapt-get update and Code: Select allapt-get upgrade
Switched off my system after using it for close to 3 hours. Today I booted my system and I could not see any GUI in action except mouse pointer. What I can only see is clicked on my camera and posted below for your review. When I get the login screen, I can choose different DE (fluxbox) and I was able to login and do some action. I don't know the reason for this sudden disappearance of desktop.

Before upgrading to Natty I used to have a Banshee icon in my panel when the application was open - I could close the program but it would just minimize to the panel. Now when I open Banshee there is no icon in the panel. I checked the preferences menu to see if I could change this setting, but didn't see anything there.

Since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.31-18 I have been experiencing problems with my sound. 2.6.31-18 sound problems with nvidia MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78SThe laptop speakers no longer shut off when plugging in headphones. My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.
Here is what was installed:
Installed the following packages:
linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.20)
linux-headers-2.6.31-18 (2.6.31-18.55)

this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

After having some issues with GRUB2 not showing my operating system list, I accidently screwed up my Windows 7 partition by selecting the 'Bootable' checkbox in thePalimpsest(?) Disk Utility. After finding this thread (and the links provided in responses), the problem appears to be the same but, unlike the user in that thread, I was unable the uncheck the Bootable flag after checking it - the partition became totally unrecognised, and the Disk Usage Analyser shows only ~5gb of HDD space in use.
I have no other Windows installation on my hard drive, apart from the Recovery Partition which existed when the PC was bought. The thread I linked to suggested that the bootmgr file may be on the partition of another bootable Windows partition (although I'm not able to get to the PC in question right now, so I'm not 100% sure if the Recovery Partition was flagged as bootable or not)What I need to know is:(1) Is it possible to solve this problem without having to re-install Windows? I don't really have many tools (or much knowledge about all these things) at my disposal, and have no idea how to access the Recovery Partition files in order to see if the required Boot folder and bootmgr file are there. Also, in the file explorer, my Windows 7 partition is no longer visible.
(2) If this is possible, do I require internet access on the PC itself? Ever since I installed Ubuntu, it has been unable to detect proprietary drivers for my network card (whereas the demo from the USB stick I installed Ubuntu with was capable of detecting proprietary drivers)

Before we begin just some general information, I'm running on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv6; This laptop is something you would buy off of best buy's show floor. I installed Ubuntu through wubi in windows 7. I have a 500 GB Hard Drive. As of right now I can explore the windows 7 part of the hard drive. Now the problem began on Friday January 21st after I shrunk my Windows parition by 100GBS leaving around 370 GBS left in windows. Then I went into Ubuntu to try and format the 100GBS to create a space so I can share media in between windows and Ubuntu. ( At the time I didn't realise I could already go into the Windows Partition).

I tried Ubuntu 10.10 after occasionally using other distros of Linux from time-to-time on friends' machines. After deciding it trumped Windows in almost every way, I decided to install if from a USB stick. The installation appeared to work and I followed the instructions that were given on the Ubuntu download page. After it restarted, it booted back from the USB stick asking again if I wanted to try Ubuntu or install it. I tried to shut down however the only options I get in the power off menu (on the top right) are Suspend and Hibernate. I ended up turning the computer off by holding the power button on my computer (I know this has probably hindered me more than helped but I needed to shut down).
When the power was off, I removed the USB stick and tried turning on the laptop again, however, I no longer get any options to get into my BIOS settings, and NOTHING will boot. I just get a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. I can still use Ubuntu by using the ''Try Ubuntu'' option when running from the USB stick but quite obviously this is not ideal. I know I have probably wiped Windows Vista from my system (I had most data backed up a week or so ago, so all the important things I still have, however, if there is any way, I would like it all back). Any way to do a Super-System-Restore to revert back to Windows (if this is even possible).

so after my upgrade to 10.04 I'm experiencing a puzzling problem with Grub2. It can load everything fine except for XP. I have XP on a separate partition, it is detecting fine and the grub.cfg file is created withou a problem when I the appropriate commands to update and upgrade grub. What happens is that I select Windows XP from the list and it goes to a black screen where a cursor in the top left corner blinks 3-5 times and then immediately kicks me back to the Grub menu. I can do this forever but the grub menu just gets reloaded every time. Any ideas?
Here is the windows portion of my Grub.cfg:
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
menuentry "Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ntfs
[code]...
Here is my boot.ini on the ntfs partion I am trying to boot into
[boot loader]

I'm having an issue getting a triple-boot machine to work. I'm trying to triple-boot Mac OS X Snow Leopard (iAtkos S3) 32-bit, Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I install Mac with no issues it boots up and works. In Mac setup I make 4 partitions: Mac, Linux, Linux Swap, and Windows. After Mac is installed, I install Windows. Then Ubuntu. I select to have GRUB installed on the Linux partition. Now when I boot the PC I get a choice of Ubuntu, Windows, memtest, and Mac. Both Ubuntu and Mac work, but when I select Windows, I just get a black screen with a flashing cursor. Files are still intact and nothing has been deleted. I tried booting from the Windows CD, and running bootrec.exe /fixmbr, but all that gives me is no boot device available. I've tried every combination of installing and configuring but can't seem to get it to work. Everything is backed up so I don't mind reformatting and starting fresh if I need to. Also the Windows disk does see Windows 7 when I run scanOS. I can't use the repair option on the Windows disk as it gives me an error saying the CD is not compatible.

Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.
What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:
Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.
So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.
