I started using lubuntu and I gotta tell ya, this is running smoking hot on my system. Though, I was curious, what are the limits of this thing? Do any of yall use it? Noticing that Libreoffice isn't initially installed. Can it run that ok?
View 9 RepliesBack in the day, I foolishly installed my Fedora server with the default logical volume layout on one physical volume. Knowing now that this is a huge waste of space (partition is large) I'd like to reduce the logical volume and somehow detach this now unused space and mount as a normal partition. Is this possible? Only 20GB of the 160GB has been used for the OS. Home partition is on a secondary disk.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a whitebox server with three network adapters, two gigabit adapters using the intel 82573V chips, and an intel pro/100 adapter based on the 82562 chip. These are embedded on an MSI motherboard. None are passing traffic.I initially booted the box using a Knoppix 5.0.1 CD, and the NICs worked fine. When I installed CentOS 5.4, no joy.Interestingly, Intel recommends the e1000e driver (which I am using), but the Knoppix CD used the e1000 driver. Anyway, I pulled an updated e1000e driver from elrepo,installed it, and verified that it was in use with 'ethtool --driver eth2', and the correct driver/version was displayed.
Symptoms are no traffic passes, rx/tx packet counts in ifconfig are both 0 (no errors, either). Routing table looks fine; three routes: one for 169.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x (my subnet), and one for 0.0.0.0, all destined for eth2, and all up. When I ping 127.0.0.1, and the local adapter address, I get good replies. As soon as I ping a remote host on my subnet, I get 'Destination host unreachable'. Now, at one point, I actually got it to work. I applied a small patch from Intel to change a value in the EEPROM, rebooted as instructed, and the adapter came up and passed traffic. I did a 'yum update' to update my packages, and shortly thereafter, everything stopped working again.

I can't find any way to launch it. Applications > Office used to have OpenOffice Writer in it. Now there are no menu items for LibreOffice any darn place.
I have installed Lubuntu on my dell Latitude C400. Recently I had Unbuntu, but my system was to slow for it. The wireless worked when I installed sl-modem-daemon_2.9.11~20100303-2_i386.deb, however this does not work with Lubuntu. I have used the ndiswrapper to install a driver from windows, and still it is not installed.
After iwconfig i get
lo no wireless extensions
eth1 no wireless extensions
The other problem is this laptop has no cd dive and the ethernet connection does not work, so I can t do updates.
I have C/C++ source codes and the corresponding binaries in proj/src and proj/bin.I have `import`ed both directories into my svn project and then `checkout`ed both. Later I made changes to the source code and hence new executables, but I'm not able to `checkin` the executables back to the svn project.`svn status` ignores the executables in the proj/bin directory. What should I do to `checkin` executables?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm experiencing a two or three problems with (I think) the Unity desk top. I'm not sure they're related so I'll post them as separate threads. Here's the second.
When I boot up Ubuntu the initial desktop related menus, which should appear at the left hand side of the top menu bar, are not visible until after I've launched and then minimised an application (doesn't appear to matter which application). Once I've done that the menus reappear.
Have logitech camera, seems to be detected initially, but dropped later for some reason.

Starting and application or opening new windows on my machine takes two hands. Once hand with the mouse and one with the alt-key, before I can have normal control over the window. In normal control, I mean the ability to move, minimize and exit the window. That's because every time I start a new application or open a new application window it opens to the top left of the screen.The title bar of the window is buried below Unity's top menu bar. That means I can't grab the window by the title bar to move it or minimize it. I have to hold down the alt-key then grab with the mouse to position the window in a location where I can properly view it (closer to the center of the monitor on my right).I might be missing something if there is an option I can set so the new window locations can remember the position and size from last closed.This is very annoying, whereas I open and lost lots of windows during the course of working. Even browsing this forum, I click on the new posts option and right click on topics from the list to read from a new window. After finishing with that topic I close the window. Often I might open up two or three windows in that topic to type replies or review references mentioned in that topic. Then I close all the windows and open up a new window with the next topic of interest.
It's bad enough that the OS doesn't remember the preferred size and position of the window. But if it were possible to just drive and the window to the position and resist only using the mouse, it would be great, since my hand is already on the mouse. But because the title menu is buried under Unity's Top Menu, I have to hold down the alt-key with my left hand while dragging the mouse with my right hand.If no one has a fix or suggestion and this is affecting everyone, I guess it'll be off to the bug/feature forum to inform the developers of the problem.
I've written custom prompts for several boxes but this one has an error I just can't identify and need a second set of eyes to help solve it.

Everything looks fine initially as you can see here:url
1- It sets the username@host in back on green text.
2- It then changes to an off-white an prints the command number for the terminal.
3- Next, changes to a green on black font and prints the working directory.
4- Finally is prints a ">" character and a space.
The problem occurs when I try to "up arrow" to reuse and/or edit a prior command. It prints the prior command fine, but if I arrow over to edit the command sometimes the first character can not be deleted from displaying as you can see in the following composite screen-shot

Here I did a simple ps and piped it through grep. After getting the output, I up-arrow to repeat the command. As you can see by the second section the cursor only goes back to the "s" in ps. The "p" can not be deleted. Hitting enter just displays a new line, so the "p" was just a ghost being displayed and not really there.
Not doubt this sounds alarmist, and perhaps it is... anyway, earlier tonight my mum complained that her home network connection wasn't working. After complaining about Windows and running a virus scan, I returned to my laptop, only to find my Ubuntu 10.04 was having the same problem. Then I noticed the wireless connection light (next to send and receive, which always blinks anyway) was constantly flashing, as if transmitting data, even though neither of us was connected, of course. I turned the router off and on again a few minutes later. Initially the light was still blinking abnormally, but I could now access the internet, as could mum, so I ignored it.
Later on, while the virus scan on mum's computer was running, Windows notified her she was running out of hard drive space - normally about 30GB of the 51GB HD is used on her laptop, but suddenly 50GB had been used. I also noticed my 275GB Ubuntu partition had 235GB free (although total size of files on disk was 128TB - a bug perhaps?), i.e. 40GB used, which seems pretty large for a rather fresh install and a handful of documents!Currently, everything's normal where my router's concerned (no blinking lights except for my browsing), and my Lucid partition is still showing 235GB free (strangely, mum's laptop now shows 46GB used instead of 50GB). So, what do we make of all this? Were our computers hacked for storage space?
Have just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?
Is there a way to modify the grub.cfg file to stop this problem ( all posts say dont touch this file??Or install a script to delete the grubenv file on shutdown as a workaround for me, (I have no idea how to do this whatsoever, I'm not familiar with linux at all)I did read that this problem was fixed/patched in Grub version 2, but dosn't seem.so on my system afetr I updated it when I got into Ubuntu.I couldnt find the patch or fix, I got the information I am on about from this post:URL...It seems to say it was fixed or patched by Colin Watson reading through, but I don't really understand whats being said or how to get the patch on my system if indeed there is one?Sorry for being a bit thick about all this, its a bit beyond my brain now, hope somebody can help out as I have enjoyed my brief bit of fun in Ubuntu.
I'm in a directory containing various files and subdirectories, one of which is called BACKUP and is initially empty, what exactly happens if I launch the following command line:

If I'm not mistaken, all the content of the current directory should be copied into the BACKUP directory, apart from the directory BACKUP itself. Actually I get a message saying something like:
Code: cannot copy a directory onto itself BUT when I look into the BACKUP directory I find another directory called BACKUP which I did not expect to find. Moreover, if I launch the same command again I get the same message (repeated two or more times) and then I find that inside the "second" BACKUP directory there is a third one, with the same name again. In other words, every time I launch the command I get a deeper tree of "BACKUP" directories, as if the command was messing everything up. I know that most probably I'm the one who's messing things up and I also know the "problem" can be easily bypassed by using as a destination for the copy a directory located elsewhere, but I'd like anyway to understand the reason for such a behaviour.
my first go around with LXDE has been miserable. I got every machine I've had my hands on working great with KDE, Gnome (both in netbook too), and XFCE. however I decided to get as light as possible with my netbook after this glorious Lucid upgrade (I hate to change when I've got it how I want... but it was time for a LTS) and try Lubuntu.
So here's the snag. I have a HP mini 110 1125NR and travel very often, and speed is sometimes of the essence, and because for the netbook I don't need all the eye candy yet and want something fast. I got Lubuntu for it's built-in netbook interface and got the install fine (in safe graphics of course).... and I don't like any build I've seen with the Chromium OS except maybe Hexxah's Flow so I'm sticking to debian
Now, install went great and I'll modify things later, but I cannot seem to get past the BIOS boot, it sits there with a black screen with the cursor (solved with UNE by editing GRUB temporarily).... but nothing I've tried yet has worked, or I did it wrong...
How can you get Compiz to work in Lubuntu. I tryed to change the window manager, but can't. Is there a way?

I tried to remove pcmanfm, install xfdesktop and replace in /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart @pcmanfm on @xfdesktop. It doesn't work.
Thinking of uninstalling GNOME/ubuntu-desktop and installing LXDE/lubuntu-desktop in its place. Just a couple of Qs. Got some hunches, just want to confirm/deny them:
* Does LXDE use GDM for login, or something else?
* Installing lubuntu-desktop would uninstall network-manager. Need to reboot if I do this, I take it?

I try the menu "Install Lubuntu" from LiveCD but it does not work. And I remaster Lubuntu follow the methods LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch
and make the custom initrd with preceed file inside to use the option "automatic-ubiqiuty" but it does not work too.
Is this a bug of Ubiqiuty in Lubuntu?
I recently installed Lubuntu to a USB. It was up and running and worked fine, however, upon exiting and going to boot into windows, I noticed it had installed a GRUB bootloader. I use whole disk encryption on windows, which has its own bootloader, so I can't be having some other bootloader on the PC interfering with this. I used my rescue disk to restore my WDE bootloader, but the USB stick will not boot now.
I also tried using pendrivelinux but this copies the live cd version onto the USB stick and nothing saves when you log off.installing Lubuntu to USB without a boot loader?

I'm trying Lubuntu for my low-resource netbook and I'm lovin' it.
But I can't get my ssh key passphrase work with the keyring manager.
I even created a new user account with a fresh home directory and it doesn't work. You run "ssh myname@mydomain.net" and it prompts you for the key passphrase in the terminal.
Expected behavior: with Gnome, you run "ssh myname@mydomain.net" and the password manager opens a GUI to ask for the passphrase. Once unlocked, it remains unlocked until you log off. Moreover, at that moment of unlocking you can tell it to remember the passphrase forever so it gets automatically unlocked next time you login.
The keyring works fine for the wireless password, and for luks-encrypted volumes, but not for Secure Shell keys.
I'm using Ubuntu Lucid, installed lubuntu-desktop package, using gdm session manager, all updated.
Isn't Lubuntu FAB! And it's very easy to customise...once you know how.

I have a live/persistent installs of Lubuntu 10.04 on a USB-HDD. It's on a 320 GB portable drive. I've partitioned it so that 80 GB is for the Lubuntu live install and the remaining 240 GB is another partition dedicated to storing stuff. So this USB-HDD is doing double duty. The thing is, I was paying so much attention to making the persistent install work without making a mess of the boot loader (I did that in the past; twice!) that I had overlooked the fact my live install does not have a swap sartition on it. I just assumed (incorrectly) that the swap partition on would just be part and parcel of the installation. Can anyone tell me of a way to add a swap partition to each of my live installs? Without losing any data or anything like that. It's probably not doing any harm not having a swap partition, but I'm assuming that my live install would be that much more efficient with it.
