I have 3 computers running Ubuntu 10.10 (2x regular Ubuntu, 1x Lubuntu) and I need VLC media player 1.0.6 (the version from Lucid). I cannot use the Maverick VLC player, I need an older one.What is the best way to install it? Is there a better option then installing it from source code?

When I had Ubuntu, in System Preferences I had a Sound mixer that would allow me to set the volume beyond 100%. It simply said "Sound" and was different than the applet feature. Both were preinstalled. With Lubuntu, I seem to have lost this option. I went through and installed Gnome ALSA Mixer along with Pulse Audio Control, but neither does what this simple volume control feature on Ubuntu did. My speakers are horrible, and the previous "Sound" feature really let me crank it up a bit. I'm not trying to blow my speakers out or anything;

I have heard good things about Lubuntu and that it can speed things up, and that it uses pretty much the same installer as Ubuntu. However, just after I select either TRY or INSTALL (it doesn't matter) the screen goes black and the computer reboots.
A fellow on another forum mentioned he has a IBM 600e with only 128 MB RAM running Lubuntu. The 600e is a lessor form of my 600X, both coming out the same year. So, technically, my 600X should have no problems as they are the same machine, I just have more RAM and a higher Mhz.
I can boot Lubuntu liveCD I burned on a desktop machine just fine so, on the face of things, it looks like the cd is OK.

Recently my disc drive died from unknown reasons and because of this i have no other variants of installing Lubuntu except using usb drive. I tried Unetbootin and usb-creator-gtk non of them worked. The "Try Ubuntu Without Installing" won't load in both situations.

I can still access and see my windows partition.

WinXP service pack 3 and all updates are current, with one glitch, system will not 'restart' have to press off button, then have to press off button twice again to start XP running again. Tried to run off CD using xubuntu, Lubuntu 11.04 and Unbuntu 11.04. A page of errors covers the screen, I have a photo attached which I hope you can download and zoom in on.

I have a Ubuntu CD sent by Cononical . It runs slow because of my old computer . Now I have downloaded and burnt Lubuntu . Ubuntu Cd has an application Wubi which lets me install it inside XP .
Lubuntu dont have that app so I have to run live CD and install from there .The problems arrives in 5th step when I am asked to select a partition but it says no root selected . So I cant install Lubuntu .

View 6 Replies View RelatedLinux newb here. I was looking for a lightweight distro that I really like and Lubuntu was it. I installed in on all three of my comps with out issues and my old Dell desktop(512mb ram) is flying now. Way faster than XP even right after a fresh install of both on the same desktop. On my fourth install, my girlfriends old toshiba laptop, it installed fine. After the restart and reboot it gets to the Lubuntu logo with the 5 dots under it. It gets through 4 of the dots then freezes. I left it for 20 minutes and it was stuck.
I tried booting from cd again and check disc for defects. It said it found 2 files with errors, press any key to reboot. Which I did and it just booted right back into the freeze. Maybe since I have to manually make it boot from cd every time it was wanting to boot back into the CD after the disc check, I'm not sure. I tried burning a new iso on a slower speed, same thing for a total of 3 reinstalls with the same effect. The only thing different about this install compared to my others is:
A) I had to flash the bios from windows before I started to even get the damn thing to be able to boot from CD
B) I decided to just wipe XP and install Lubuntu on the whole drive.
I've tried installing Lubuntu 11.04 without any success, it just hangs on the blue splash screen. The md5 checksum matches and the integrity of the cd is fine.Can anyone suggest an alternative distro that can be run on an old comp with 192 MB memory.

It was installing grub-pc (1.98 lubuntu6). It hanged there for several hours. Finally I interrupted the installation. When I went to the installed packages I got a message telling: Grub-PC 1.98 Lubuntu 6 Failed to Install or Upgrade. I'm pretty new to Linux so I know nothing about it, but I wish to go away from Windows XP.

I tried to install last version of xubuntu then, and I got a message that /dev/../loop0 couldn' d mount or sth then I learned about lubuntu and I tried to installed them but I tried both a dvd and a cd and on both cases after I select language and "install on this machine" I just see a screen with 4 red dots writing "Ubuntu 10.10" that stays like this forever.. and nothing happens. the same if I select to boot from the cd just to check the environment. I then tried a ubuntu-studio dvd I had handy just to see if this would work - and it started installing as expecting, I cancelled it after a while. how to get lubuntu running?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Lubuntu 10.10 on a board with a AMD Geode LX800 @ 500MHz and 256 MB of memory. I've been sucessful in running in Live Cd mode from a CF card, however when trying to install it gets stuck with either this message "syscall_call+0x7/0xb" or this "kernel_thread_helper". I've tried to install with this parameter "acpi=off", but still no sucess.I've tried to install from a external cd drive to a CF, from a USB pen drive to a CF, from a CF to a HDD, etc...
PS. I've also tried other distros however only this and Xubuntu were able to go into Live CD mode, and Xubuntu was slow, very slow.
The options for installation mention Ubuntu, but not lubuntu, is there some way to install flash for Lubuntu?

I can hear the CD spinning up but nothing happens. Looking at the specs, the PC should be able to run lubuntu, right? Could somebody point me in the right direction? I've verified both the ISO and the CD checksum, both check out, so there should be no issue with the install media
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Lubuntu 10.04 yesterday (yay, my first serious installation!), and I was trying to install the drivers for my video card (GeForce 6200), when it told me that it couldn't use ld. After oing some research I found out that it was in binutils. So I went over and got it and tried to ./configure it when it told me that there weren't any C compilers in $PATH, so I went over to the gcc homepage with a fine-toothed comb and found gcc 4.5.0. When I tried to./configure it, it also told me that there aren't any C compilers in $PATH.

I got every machine I've had my hands on working great with KDE, Gnome (both in netbook too), and XFCE. however I decided to get as light as possible with my netbook after this glorious Lucid upgrade (I hate to change when I've got it how I want... but it was time for a LTS) and try Lubuntu.
So here's the snag. I have a HP mini 110 1125NR and travel very often, and speed is sometimes of the essence, and because for the netbook I don't need all the eye candy yet and want something fast. I got Lubuntu for it's built-in netbook interface and got the install fine (in safe graphics of course).... and I don't like any build I've seen with the Chromium OS except maybe Hexxah's Flow so I'm sticking to debian
Now, install went great and I'll modify things later, but I cannot seem to get past the BIOS boot, it sits there with a black screen with the cursor (solved with UNE by editing GRUB temporarily).... but nothing I've tried yet has worked, or I did it wrong...

I tried to remove pcmanfm, install xfdesktop and replace in /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart @pcmanfm on @xfdesktop. It doesn't work.
Thinking of uninstalling GNOME/ubuntu-desktop and installing LXDE/lubuntu-desktop in its place. Just a couple of Qs. Got some hunches, just want to confirm/deny them:
* Does LXDE use GDM for login, or something else?
* Installing lubuntu-desktop would uninstall network-manager. Need to reboot if I do this, I take it?

I try the menu "Install Lubuntu" from LiveCD but it does not work. And I remaster Lubuntu follow the methods LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch
and make the custom initrd with preceed file inside to use the option "automatic-ubiqiuty" but it does not work too.
Is this a bug of Ubiqiuty in Lubuntu?
I recently installed Lubuntu to a USB. It was up and running and worked fine, however, upon exiting and going to boot into windows, I noticed it had installed a GRUB bootloader. I use whole disk encryption on windows, which has its own bootloader, so I can't be having some other bootloader on the PC interfering with this. I used my rescue disk to restore my WDE bootloader, but the USB stick will not boot now.
I also tried using pendrivelinux but this copies the live cd version onto the USB stick and nothing saves when you log off.installing Lubuntu to USB without a boot loader?

I'm trying Lubuntu for my low-resource netbook and I'm lovin' it.
But I can't get my ssh key passphrase work with the keyring manager.
I even created a new user account with a fresh home directory and it doesn't work. You run "ssh myname@mydomain.net" and it prompts you for the key passphrase in the terminal.
Expected behavior: with Gnome, you run "ssh myname@mydomain.net" and the password manager opens a GUI to ask for the passphrase. Once unlocked, it remains unlocked until you log off. Moreover, at that moment of unlocking you can tell it to remember the passphrase forever so it gets automatically unlocked next time you login.
The keyring works fine for the wireless password, and for luks-encrypted volumes, but not for Secure Shell keys.
I'm using Ubuntu Lucid, installed lubuntu-desktop package, using gdm session manager, all updated.
