i have to use lh command. I have installed all updates for ubuntu, live-build (the package for lh) and its updates. So my system is fully updated. When i hit "lh" command i get the following message: The program 'lh' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install live-build
When i do type: "sudo apt-get install live-build" i get:
Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done live-build is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I am trying to put up my own Quake2 server to play with my friends. During this installation process I have encountered rather confusing issue. First I downloaded the Q2 server binaries in RPM package and tried installing it:
I wanted to check what version of GRUB I have installed. I went to terminal and typed grub --versionI got this message back: The program 'grub' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install grub
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 alongside windows xp pro. When I turn my pc on I have the option to boot to ubuntu or xp and at the top of the window it says that the version of grub running is "GNU GRUB Version 1.98+20100804-5Ubuntu-3" how I shold go about installing GRUB 2 or just leave it as is.
I just want a simple email notifier. I have started to use Ubuntu 10.10 and seem to have downloaded Gmailwatcher - it shows in Applications/Internet/Gmailwatcher. But it doesn't show as installed software in the Installed Software Centre. So, I cant uninstall it. I can't configure it? If I try to open Gmailwatcher I receive a popup asking me to open it from an icon above - but there's no icon there, I just want a simple email notifier - preferably one which I can add an audio alert.
So installing a programm is a problem. I like to install Aqualung. "/.configure" works. But "make" seems to be not installed. "checkinstall" seems to be not installed "sudo apt-get make" does not work. I have no internet connection with linux, because I have no idea how I install the network card. I guess this sudo command use internet? Is there another way to compile that program? (And just by the way, why must this be so difficult?
my cli system is good but with one big restriction. i cant play any ps1/nes/n64 etc emulators. i have a ton of n64 and psx roms saved and want to play them. what happens if x is installed but i dont install a window manager? would it remain cli until an x app needs to launch x11?
I finally got the ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso file burned onto a CD, but I can't get it to install on my powerbook G4/1GHz (it has a full GB of memory). If this is the wrong iso file what do I need to do to get the correct one. Just want to make clear this has only one OS on at the moment (ubuntu 6.0.6) and I cannot connect it to the internet! I don't have an ISP that accepts linux computers.
I had a cd laying around with ubuntu on it, and I wanted to play around with it some more. So I installed Ubuntu, and couldn't believe how slow it was! you've guessed it: I've installed x86 on a x64 computer. Now i want to go from x86 to x64, what steps to take?
I just downloaded this since it says it works for my graphics card (ATI Radeon x1200 series) and I need this since my laptop is laggy playing flash games, ....., compiz fusion. So I want to know how to install this? I tried: Right click> Properties> Permissions tab> Check marked "allow executing file as program" I then double clicked the .run file and ran it in terminal, It did some things and I swore it installed! but I don't see or feel a difference, so how do I install this and how do I tell if its installed?
SO I installed Ubuntu 9.10 nad then windows XP. Now I can only get into windows. I tried to re-install Grub on the linux partition but I get an error: Cannot Read `/grub/core.img`correctly
I followed the tutorial on this forum. I booted to my Ubunut CD, ran termainal, sudo fdisk -l, mounted my Linux partition and ran sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/sda1 /dev/sda1. Which gave the error above.
How else can I fix this. Bearing in mind I cannot log into my Ubuntu system.
I am running the xfce desktop on a new ubuntu 9.10 installation.I used the Synaptics Package Manager to install several applications, including R, the statistics programming language. After the installation, it took me quite a while to find where the package manager put the executable, but I found it.The problem is, I can't figure out how to get it to execute. I tried double clicking on it and I tried right clicking on it and selecting "Execute" from the menu that pops up.
How do I get an executable to execute? Also, is there an easy way to track down where the executables get put after I use the Synaptics Package Manager? It would be handy if I could put links to them in some central location.
long time reader, first time poster i appear to have both grubs installed under /boot/grub i have both a menu.lst and a grub.cfg im booting fine, can update-grub fine, my only issue is that i can't remove old kernels and update the correct grub my menu.lst doesn't show the old kernel so i can only assume im booting with grub2 but can only update-grub for grub(1)
it's a minor issue now but i'm worried it will have wider consequences in time
I've just been playing with the whereis command. For a program installed with synaptic package manager or comes preinstalled, whereis finds the path to the program. These programs in applications menu or startup applications don't need directory information, somehow linux must have them in some kind of a directory or something. For a program extracted from a .bz file, linux has no idea where the program is and I must give directory information. So how does linux find programs that are installed normally? It can't just search through files, that would seem to be slow. Is there a table or directory where program location is stored?
I installed Ubu 9.04 on a Windows Vista machine. It worked OK. I -- attempted -- to upgrade to Ubu 9.10 on the Vista machine; everything Ubu was trashed. I have the CD for Ubu 10.04. Question: Will 10.04 install (from the CD) on top of previous good/bad installs (without going outside the existing Ubu partition)?
I recently installed gtk+ for java on gnome. via sudo apt-get install libjava-gnome-java and after the installation i went to net beans, open it up and typed: import org.gnome.gdk.Event; I got a red line under the org part and a yellow line through out, meaning its an unused import. the red part is what I am concerned about: the error message is as states - pakage import org.gnome.gdk.Event; does not exist. but it has too because i installed the required packages from [URL]
How do I know if I installed the netbook version of ubuntu or the vanilla version on my dell mini 10? I was sure that I downloaded the .iso for the netbook version, but I seem to get the normal ubuntu.
I have dual-boot on my Pc (Ubuntu & Kubuntu),Both are on different drives. Last time I was trying to remove my Kubuntu-drive ,after formatting I reboot my pc, then it shows me the message like grub error or similar error. Now I have again my Dual-boot(Gnome=KDE) and if I remove one of them, what step should I kept in mind (so that I can't lose my Grub again). Moreover, I want to know the location of My grub..in file-sys. I found the File name=menu.list and in some tutorial I have studied that this menu help for rearranging the position or 4 Windows boot help, but when I open my MENU.LIST I found no names of my OS as a title.
Usually when something is installed from the repos, it automatically provides a menu launch option. Sometimes not!I have installed the game rocksndiamonds . The game can be run by simply typing this into the terminal. But how can I add this to the other games in the menus ? ( I don't want my kids to have to use the terminal.
I have installed Kompozer from the ubuntu software menu, synaptic and from the terminal and I not only don't have icons or menu item, but I cannot load it from terminal either. I have tried complete removal with synaptic but it changes nothing. I wondering if something is hanging around from the old one, but I would not know were to look? I installed kompozer on another machine and that one works?
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer. Everything is working great, except for the fact that there is no sound. My speakers are plugged in and everything, so I'm guessing it's a problem with drivers, but I don't know much about dealing with drivers.
I got this system installed and it ran through about six uses then started freezing on boot. It gets as far as starting to set up the prompt for the password. It get's my user name up and then freezes before it completes and opens a prompt input.
Hey all! For the past week or so, I've had a losing battle with the Update Manager. I try to install my updates, but... well this screenshot should describe my explanation. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could get my updates installed?
