Feb 26, 2010My karmic install locks up whenever I try to launch an application. Open office, firefox, doesn't really matter. about the only thing that works consistently is terminal.

Feb 2, 2010I'm having one heck of a time getting Ubuntu to run on a Mac Mini. The OS installs flawlessly. It's after the install that the problems start. As soon as I input my username and password the Circle icon for loading appears and nothing happens beyond that point. Mind you I've installed Ubuntu at least 20 times and I'm about fed up with it.I've installed Fedora-PPC and Vine Linux. They both allowed me to login without any problems. May 13, 2010I've experienced this problem with a distribution upgrade and then subsequently with a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04. Basically half the time that I boot up Ubuntu, it completely locks up with the following messages on screen (Sorry, I had to take a picture since it was locked up)However, when it does boot correctly, it pauses for just a moment after displaying the above text, and then displays a few additional lines, after which it goes on to boot 'normally'.
The next lines show 'plymouth' and 'ureadahead' processes being killed. If these lines show up the boot continues normally, otherwise the boot process hangs at the first picture.It is pretty frustrating to have to perform a hard restart during nearly every other boot, and the hangs seem almost completely random. Sometimes, it happens a couple times in a row, sometimes I can boot normally several times in a row. It also doesn't seem to be related to a cold start, versus a restart.

Everytime it gives me a black screen on boot, I can fix the problem by popping in the LiveCD, and changing the xorg.conf file back to the backup.Here are the errors/warnings from my boot.log file:

Ubuntu :: Karmic Koala : Startup SSH And MPD?
Jan 10, 2010As most users, I am new to Upstart.
I am looking for the easiest way to get my workstation running with the needed services. At this time, these include SSHD and Music Player Daemon.
I ve installed both and they work when activated manually by sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start, or mpd respectively. But I don t have a clue as to how to start them up with an Upstart job?
I ve tried this code...
but to no success.

Apr 22, 2010this computer (Yakumo model 331, 386 MB RAM) began running really slowly, crashing when multitasking, etc., but only in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. Kubuntu Karmic has no problem, nor does OpenSUSE. I finally figured out the problem when looking at system monitor: 0 bytes of swap! I have a 640 MB swap partition, which the other OS's are able to access, but Ubuntu no longer does unless I open a terminal and type in

If I do this, everything works fine until next time I boot up. Is there any way to fix this?

Jan 5, 2010Before karmic while I was using Jaunty, I used to do it all the time, play my favorite sounds wherever I was them, startup, error, login, logout, etc etc... I found it in System>Preferences>Sound...
But when I do the same in Karmic, the opening dialogue box doesn't give me an option to change every sound specifically, instead, although it gives me option to choose a sound theme of my own. But for that I must first compile a theme and then install it / place it in sound themes directory etc etc.
How would I change sounds for particular events without having to compile a whole new theme (customizing the current Ubuntu sound theme)...
how do I create sound themes for Ubuntu and them install them in my Ubuntu?

Jan 13, 2011I am running Unbuntu 10.10 on a HTPC, and also XBMC. With some effort it worked ok, sounds, remote etc. Via systems>preferences I managed to add XBMC to the startup. It now starts when I start the PC. However it sort-of hijacks the PC, so the WiFi does not start among other things. Also I am no longer able to log into the desktop, so I am not able to emove XBMC from the start-up of the computer. If I exit XBMC I get to the log-in screen for the desktop, but when I log in it starts XBMC directly.
How can I remove it via the terminal? I cannot find a .config directory, any autostart, any .xsession, .xinitrc or anything else that looks like startup-script. How can I get access to my desktop again?

May 26, 2011I have downloaded Ubuntu within windows 7, with wubi. It shows itself as Ubuntu 10.10, though I had selected 11.04, not to worry, this is for information only. I downloaded Q Cad, a drawing programme from the Ubuntu software centre and it shows in the list but I do not know how to launch it.I will have to down load some more applications and I think I will run into this wall again. I can enter CLI through Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F7 and probably do nothing more.

I need to reinstall Lenny however if I do that I will loose Karmic Koala in the grub screen because of the new version of grub that comes with Karmic Koala. Which means that I will need to reinstall Karmic Koala after Lenny so that they both appear in the grub screen at startup. If I reinstall only Lenny is it possible to use Gparted to change the boot back to Karmic Koala and have them both in the grub screen again? Or is there another way around it?

May 8, 2010I like to use Tilda in transparent mode. In Karmic I just added tilda to the startup applications and everything worked well. Now in Lucid, it starts up before Compiz and I don't get Compiz transparency. I have to quit Tilda and load it again before I get the transparency right. Is there some way to force tilda to start after Compiz? (I have tested this on several comps. it seems to hold true)

that works, BUT the browser is opening BEHIND the top 'menu' bar, and the bottom 'task' bar, which obviously, is not what i want. how do i set it to either hide these 'bars' or open the browser in front of them like it does if i manually run the command from a terminal?

But, is there a way to achieve the same thing via the terminal? I want to know because I am writing a simple bash script that installs all of the programs I commonly use. One such program is compiz fusion with fusion-icon.And so I want to add the fusion-icon into the gnome session with my script (strictly within the terminal).

May 3, 2010I installed Startup Manager but the appearance and security tabs are missing. I really want to be able to change the resolution of the splash screen cause it looks all pixelated and I want to have the splash screen that 9.10 had.
I tried reinstalling and restarting but the issue remains. I know its somewhat functional because I am able to change the seconds that grub takes but when I try to change the resolution of the purple ubuntu startup screen it looks like it tries to change it but it fails.

It has dependencies (right term?) in the directory it's in, so if I run "python /home/user/directory/script.py" I get an error.
