have a problem with an Acer Aspire one running linpus linux. I get a black screen with a white mouse pointer at startup. I don't know how this happened. Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. I can move the mouse pointer around and such and the lights flash but stop suddenly.I can't use the bios recovery disk as I haven't got a USB big enough.

After the installation I shutdown and went to sleep.The system now boots to purple screen ubuntu dot loading and then to black screen with the mouse pointer in the centre. Then nothing happens. I searched in the forums and tried to go to recovery mode and ran dkpg, then failsafeX, but failsafeX cannot detect my input devices, Hence I can't do anything.
I've installed 11.2 KDE on a very old samsung V20 specs here: [URL]... My problem is that when I boot I get a black screen with just the mouse pointer. I can boot in failsafe fine, but the graphics are horrible. My question is, is there a workaround or am I flogging a dead horse with this laptop? This is my first venture into Linux, and I was really keen on leaving windows far behind. I've tried quite a few sax2 commands to no avail.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Open Suse 11.3. I normally use GNOME or KDE sessions. Yesterday I was just thought of trying other Desktop Environments. so I logged out to choose a different session. I tried LXDE and logged back out. After that I found "metacity" in the sessions list and tried it. But no desktop appeared. All I got is black screen a with the mouse pointer/cursor. I waited for quite some time but no desktop, panel, etc loaded or was visible.
I could not figure out how to log off so I hit the start button. After reboot the system automatically chose the same session (It always reuses the last used session) and I was in the same sticky situation. I tried starting in Safe mode as well but still I get the same black screen with just the mouse pointer.
I had a perfectly well running CentOS 5 system but with an old crappy monitor. I replaced the monitor by a bigger one, i did a monitor detect to make sure that CentOS would recognize the highest possible resolution. Then changed the display rsolution for the current user.
Now when i login as root just a black screen appears with a white mouse pointer and then nothing. I already deleted all the contents in the home directory /root but no improvement.
When i login as a new user X is starting perfectly.
Anyone have a clue what i need to do or delete to get X working again? I can nuke the whole box and do a reinstall but i'd rather not.
After suspending my laptop, and then resuming the screen has black and white jagged wide zig zags across the screen. I can move the mouse and login fine, it's just the graphics are all screwed up. Has anyone had this problem before? Is this X? Is it a driver issue, my info is in my sig.

my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

Running Fedora 14, and when I wake the computer after not using it for a few hours I get a black screen with only the mouse pointer visible. This can sometimes be for a minute or up to 5 or 10 minutes, I'm not quite sure what the issue is. I have the screen saver set to blank screen, and I have the computer set to never go into sleep mode, however the display turns off. I just tested it out with the screen saver only activated and it wakes fine, and then set it to turn the display off after 5 minutes, and it wakes up fine if I try then. The issue is when it has been idle for the night or longer. I am running this machine through a KVM, so I'm not sure if that may have something to do with it. You can see from the output here that the mouse seems to be getting discovered all over every time I switch back to this machine.

This isn't a major issue, but it is very annoying if I want to switch over to this machine to get a few things done and switch back. Also, if I am waiting at the blank screen with the mouse, I can still press ctrl + F2 to access the terminal immediately, so the computer is functional but the GUI seems to be delayed in coming back.
I'm running 12, not 11. I don't know why I had 11 in my head. Can this be moved BACK from EOL? If not, I'll start a new thread. Sorry. My wife and I have matching HP EliteBook 8730w "mobile workstations" (laptops that need a donkey to move them). We also have matching LG second screens. Unfortunately, we have matching mouse pointer issues too, as you might expect.
99% of the time we work away without issue. 1% of the time, Fedora suddenly stops showing the mouse pointer in the separate LG screen. The pointer is there, you can use it (if you can guess where the hell it is!) but you can't see it. Only a reboot seems to solve the problem.
It's worth noting xorg.conf is not being used. It's an nVidia card in these laptops and I tried the latest drivers from them - they totally wiped out the display, I mean total FAIL, unusable. Had to boot up in without GNOME, run level 3, to fix it. After much messing around, I think I used the FirstAidKit plugin for xserver to repair things. Since then there is no xorg.conf:

If I restore *any* xorg.conf file it all goes wrong again, so I'm guessing there are either some defaults at play or there's another system currently managing my display. Either way, restoring/editing xorg.conf won't help me with the current set-up.
I am just new in Linux. Last week I install Linux Fedora12 into my notebook. The problem is sometime it come black screen when we want to start after booting. It also blank screen when want to tab to other properties in system. It is due to graphic card or else which the system used ATI Radeon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I installed Debian Jessie, I ran into a few problems at first, but in the end everything worked fine. It started the desktop environment (gnome). I installed a few programs(sudo, chromium, tor) and saw that everything was working correctly. I shutdown the system with the command "shutdown now". Then I booted into windows to make sure I hadn't broken anything there (which I did not), but when I tried going back to Debian, it booted to a black screen with a cross as a pointer. By pressing ALT CTRL <FKEY>, I can effectively get to other virtual terminals and login there, however trying to start the desktop environment with "startx" results in the same thing.
I installed Debian on an external hard drive and made four partitions, boot, /(root), /home, and swap.
I also tried to apt-get install --reinstall gnome and apt-get install --reinstall xorg, but the result is still the same
Not actually solved, but in the end just reinstalling got rid of the problem.
I have 10.04 installed in a dual boot system with windows 7 pro on 1 desktops and one laptop. Also dual boot on a desktop with windows xp and Ubuntu 10.04. The two desktops run AMD processors and the laptop uses an Intel processor. On the two desktops after booting the screen will fade to black and white and then back to color. While in the black and white the computer is frozen. This happens using Firefox mainly and other programs. It never happens using my laptop with the intel processor. Does Ubuntu 10.04 have a problem with AMD processors? It does it so much it is hard to do anything with the and desktop computers, but I have never seen it happen on my intel laptop.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an old PC with an Intel 845 series motherboard, using an onboard graphics solution. By default, it boots with an 800x600 screen resolution. When I change the resolution to 1024x768, the resolution switches perfectly, but the mouse pointer disappears. The mouse can still be USED, but I have to 'guess' where the pointer is. The only way I have found to rectify the situation is to reboot, upon which the resolution returns to 800x600 again as well. Kubuntu 10.04 suffers from the same problem, only in Kubuntu the mouse pointer reappears when the resolution switches back to 800x600, so I don't need to reboot.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Slackware onto a virtual machine(I'm planning on buying a new disc drive and 1 TB HDD with-in the next couple of months and plan on Slackware being my primary OS[right now Mac OS X 10.6 is]), and everything went great.
I then went onto edit the /etc/inittab file in emacs and changed the run-level to 4. I don't know why it's decided that I'd want to boot into KDE when XFCE is installed and in the configuration I selected XFCE but it's not really relevant(I have a WM guide thing open in another tab and will probably be able to change it).
The problem is, as the vague title may suggest, is that it basically freezes when I'm at the log-in screen. The input field for the username is highlighted and blinking, and the cursor it self is visible in the centre of the screen, but it simply doesn't pick up on any input from my keyboard or mouse.
I tried booting up the install CD and logging in as root, mounting sda4(which is the root partition) and editing said file but sudo isn't installed(to my knowledge) on the install disc and when I do the command,

I 've recently installed UNR 10.04 Lucid Lynx in my old PC.
Specs:
CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
Mother ASRock P4i45GV R5.0
Chipset Intel 845GV w/ Intel Extreme Graphics (shared memory up to 64 / 256 MB -I don't really get which one-).
Nevertheless, when I start the Pc, Ubuntu loads and, when it's about to load the desktop, the screen turns black with white stripes and "turns itself on and off" (like when it receives no image). I don't really know if this is or not a graphic bug / problem, but it's quite strange, as I've used Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 before in that same Pc.
By the way, I get the same error with the normal Ubuntu Lucid. AND, I have a Win XP Professional SP2 installed (I've installed the Ubuntu afterwards, so I have the Grub as default bootloader).
Also, I get the same error when loading Ubuntu in LiveCD mode.

I am using a emachine w2925 desktop and I installed the newest ubuntu. And it randomly goes to a black screen with white bars vertically half way down the screen that flash between bars and a black screen every few seconds.

I thought I'd look into methods of recovering from a lost password for future use, how to change the passwd and shadow should I need to. So I started an X session, vi'd my .swp files then logged off. Perhaps I changed one of these files accidentally, but my intent was just to view them which I did. After starting up my computer the next day and logging in I began an X session - "startx". The session appears to have started, but with a black screen and an active mouse cursor.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 which I recently installed on this emachines w3107. For some reason, while doing whatever I may be doing, my screen will flash off and on for about a minute, then when it stops flashing; there is no mouse pointer visible. I can still use the mouse, but it's ghost-like.

Does anyone know if there this is a HardDrive failure or is it something else that I can try to fix? I have back ups of all critical data so a reinstall is possible but I would like to get some noncritical data out on my XP partition.
I insert my DVD into my machine. The little "waddya wanna do" window then opens, and I select "play in VLC." I then press the play option on the video menu (not the play button on the VLC controls). Then the VLC window turns black, or the part where the video is supposed to appear does, anyway. So double-clicking to get to fullscreen sometimes fixes the problem, but then I can only view it in fullscreen, not good. It didn't fix the problem this time, so I double-clicked again to get out of fullscreen. Then my whole display turns black and white. WTH? The display problem fixes on a reboot.
This happens on a regular basis when I try to play movies. My display is, right now, black and white. After I finish this post I'll restart my computer to fix the colors.Also, it should be helpful that when I move the VLC window or am going to/from fullscreen, I can see the movie for a split second, and in full color. The rest of the screen stays B & W, though.Also, for some reason, when I play a movie, VLC open two windows: one with the video, and the other with a visualization and a title bar saying "VLC (X11 output)"
I have Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu and XP in 2 HDs. I upgraded Studio to 10.04 and XP doesn't start anymore. I upgraded Ubuntu with and error in the GRUB and then just Studio was booting...With $ sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sda2 /mnt $ sudo grub-install --root-irectory=/mnt /dev/sda I recover Ubuntu boot... but not XP...at last I removed completely the GRUB2 in the Ubuntu and Studio synaptcs...Now I have all the same but with GRUB 1.97 Ubuntu starts ok, Studio starts after an error message something like: dev/ no such device. and after choosing xp in the list all that appears is a black screen with an white I will post down the sudo fdisk -l and sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

So i do a drive to drive clone (witn both hd's deing connected to another machine). And it says its done and okay. But the second (cloned) machine doesnt boot. And have the black screen with the blinking white cursor in top left corner. I have already tried to do fdisk /mbr and also copying partition table from original to destination disk. Because i think it is logical that with a drive to drive clone it sould be copied. But i have a doubt in that somehow. Because why would it not boot if it was copied then

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of 11.04 on my ThinkPad, and it is crashing to a black & white text screen unpredictably. I was able to find the following in the syslog, which looks similar to what I see when it crashes:

Did a quick search for these symptoms and couldn't find anything related. After upgrading to 10.04 I found that the computer (HP NC8000) now crashes frequently and at random intervals. It occurs sometimes after only a few minutes, other times after an hour or two. It happens while its in use, or while its idle, wether the screensaver is on or not, even if its locked and the lid closed. When I walk away and come back I find the screen has gone blank (except for the Mouse Pointer and a cursor in the top left) and the Caps Lock Light and Num Lock Light are flashing (signifying a crash)
I caught it while I was using it and watched as the screen suddenly went blank as described above. No errors or explanations or warning. A reboot restores order, but not for long. Some assistance with diagnosing this would be helpful. I suspect it could be ATI radeon 9600 mobility related, as with each passing version of ubuntu it seems to be more unstable
Now, after restarting my ubuntu, I couldnot boot back into ubuntu.
After reaching the boot menu and choosing the "Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-22-generic" option, I get a new black screen with these in white letters

the power went off in my house for a split second but it was enough for my computer to die as such linux refuses to boot, i reinstalled ubuntu 3 times now and still nothing.. the only way i can get it to do anything regarding booting is if i have a windows xp install disc in the dvd drive. other than that, bios posts and then i get a pure black screen with a white prompt and it sits there i did however find the boot info script and ran it so here is the results:
