I'm having this problem since some time ago, in which the wallpaper won't load at startup. I have to manually go to the Appearance Manager and load it.
Isn't there a way to do this automatically at startup? I know it's kind of a minor thing, but I'm all for aesthetics of my pc.
I have 10.04 NBR and have set a desktop background image which is fine until I shut down and then upon booting it is not shown until I go to appearance->background and it suddenly apears as the desktop
why it is not shown automatically on starting ?

On Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, 64-bit, 2.6.32-22-generic kernel When I log into the system, the speaker icon in the upper bar is black (just an outline) suggesting there is no sound output available. After further inspection I found that the snd-hda-intel kernel module isn't getting loaded.
I have to load the module myself (using 'modprobe snd-hda-intel') every time I turn on the computer.
Ist install 11.04, everything excellent-dual boot. usb kb & mouse. everything fine until install ATI upgrade. reboot then cannot use kb/m - so cannot edit or go past login?

I removed .recently-used.xbel to avoid recently opened files to be logged, so this explains part of these errors. I had disabled gnome-screensaver but now I would need it to automate screen lock and looks like dbus may be the problem. My .dbus directory is empty.
I have this problem across all my computers running Ubuntu (Lucid and Maverick installations). It works sometimes but it's hit and miss. Sometimes it will load up an iso no problem and i have a start up flash stick in no length of time. Other time's it will not load up an iso. I have tried formatting my flash drive these times but it doesn't make a difference as the drive is always recognised by the program yet i sometimes can't load an iso. When this happens i find that i generally have the same problem at the same time on my other Ubuntu installations. I find it weird. Anyway it's very frustrating when i come across another distro that i really want to try out and i cannot load the iso in the program.

I am new to ubuntu (from today) so I know nothing above, so I install it, and trying to load it, I have a problem if I try to start my session "ubuntu"or "ubuntu classic" I fall on the wallpaper, with a pointer loading, but loading is "eternal", the only way I have to use it is run "ubuntu classic (void)" or "ubuntu (secure mode)".
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter the upgrades have installed on my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 (there were some kernel upgrades, I don't remember if there was any libc update there) it asked me to do a reboot. So I did and I got that error when Ubuntu was starting:

I am using ubuntu 10.04 and made some changes in Xorg.conf to try enabling twinview. Unfortunately, Ubuntu just stops at the startup logo now. Is there a way I can stop the loading of X, so I can undo the error in Xorg.conf and hopefully make Ubuntu load normally again? Grub automatically loads Ubuntu, there is no Grub menu that allows loading of some alternative config.

Whats strange is when I click edit/preferences/music and then browse to select my library location (which is already correct), apon selecting the hard drive that my library is on the whole music library suddenly loads and I don't have to re-select my library folder, I just cancel the preferences window. I have updated from 10.2 to 11.1. When 11.1 starts I get into the CLI rather than an automatic startup of KDE. I can login at the CLI, then type "startx" to start KDE. I know there is someway to automatically start KDE when the computer boots, but just can't seem to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction? With 10.2 I was able to automatically load KDE as myself as user and would like to have that again in 11.1.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.

The problem is sometimes when i open the folder in nautilus , the folder keep loading forever and sometimes it shows two or three files and keep on loading . I've installed Natty, and wasn't so keen on Unity so I decided to try Gnome 3. Not sure if I prefer it either but better than unity I think so giving it a go.
Anyway, my problem is that I don't have a wallpaper and changing it doesn't have any effect, it's just a solid colour.
At first I didn't have a desktop at all but changing a setting in the gnome 3 tweak tool (Have file manager handle the desktop > on) fixed that. Then I went to install nautilus elementary but that messed up my wallpaper, hence it's now blank. I've reverted to Nautilus now but I'm not sure elementary actually worked as it didn't look any different.
I just wrote a little script to help anyone out if they want to do this. Just download loginWallpaper.sh open your terminal and cd to the download directory run

then run

./loginWallpaper.sh
and follow the prompts Make sure the pic you want to use is a .JPG and is in your home directory. Choose Option 1 on your first run. It will move the pic to the proper directory on the system and will open the Gnome Appearance Preferences at the log-in screen. After you run Option 1 logout, goto Background then Add button. Select your wallpaper and "BOOM" it changes. Log back in and run the script again

only use Option 2 to keep the Gnome Appearance Preferences from opening again.
Has anyone figured out how to get Wallpaper_Tray to work in 10.04? Or is there another wallpaper changer that will install?

Currently they only display my wallpaper and not any windows or panels. View 1 Replies View RelatedIm having a bit of a problem with my wallpaper and flash. The wallpaper was fine up until yesterday, when i changed my window transparency, using the murrine engine. It has dissapeared but everything else is there (see Screenshot[/URL]), and if i attempt to choose any picture, the background goes black, and all icons etc dissapear. The tool bar remains though, and a workaround i have discovered is to run nautilus and log out, and back in. This brings back the grey screen.
As i said, i made my windows transparent using murrine, i had a lttle play around with a new emerald theme while i was there. Im running emerald, compiz, the apearance thing, and gnome colour chooser, so maybe there is a clash? Since the wallpaper dissapeared, im unable to view som flash, i can hear it, but not see it. For instance, ..... will load upnormal but where the video is, its just grey. I can right click etc as you would if it was a video, but just no picture.Any help would be greatly appreciated, my specs are on the screenshot, and if you need any more info ill be glad to post. I also have yuuguu installed if someone would like to help remotly?
So, I had a system failure earlier today. I decide to reinstall xubuntu 9.10 on my computer. Everything goes fine and then when I start getting things set the way I want them, I find that for some odd reason, I can not change my wallpaper in xfce4. Added to that, when I click the right mouse button, nothing happens(yes I have it checked to open the application menu) and when I click in the left mouse button and drag(usually a frame appears), nothing happens.
