Ubuntu :: Internet Seemingly Dies Out Randomly
Sep 21, 2010
Whenever I use Ubuntu, the internet seemingly dies out randomly. It never does this for windows 7. Could it be the router coincidentally dying, or is it a problem with Ubuntu?

I am running 9.10 on a HP Compaq. Every few days X will die. The screen goes blank and will not display anything. I have to SSH in, but even trying various commands like gdm restart does not help. I eventually have to reboot the box. Below is a snippet (hopefully not too large) of dmesg:
/dev/sr0 on /media/cdrom0 is a CDROM, but I dont think thats the issue.

I don't want to 'spam', (I had started a first thread about this some time ago), but I'm (still) experiencing problems with my internet: I can use the internet (I am connected through a simple switch) for some time, that is: surf the internet (in firefox) and download using vuze (azureus) but after some time, the internet connection 'dies' (downloadspeeds jump to 0b/s and I am not able to surf to any site in firefox). When that happens, the only 'solution' to this is restarting my pc.
I first experienced this when using ubuntu 10.04, so I thought that it was a 10.04 issue. I knew that when I had ubuntu 9.10 (karmic koala) installed, this didn't happen. So today, I installed karmic koala, but much to my surprise I am experiencing the same problem. I used 'lspci' to find out what NIC is in my pc and I found out I have the following NIC: 00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78 ) I'm suspecting the NIC to be the problem. Is this probable? If so, I want to buy a add-in network card (simple one, not a gigabit card)

Am trying to set up a new system but am getting some strange behavoir. I've administered an Irix system before. I have opensuse 11.3 installed with gnome running. When i enter a bad user id in the windows login screen, the bad authentication causes the x window manager to crash and leaves the system in the ascii terminal mode login. I then have to login as root and do an init 3 , then init 5 to get the x server started again an get the windows login started. Has any one seen this behavior before and how can i fix this. Been hunting through /etc/X11/xdm to see what startup scripts could be causing this.

I followed this guide for my Acer Aspire One A150, and got wireless and suspend working fine:[URL]pendtoRAMThe only problem is that wireless is dead after resuming from suspend. I have to type:/etc/init.d/networking restart and after that everything works just fine and I get internet again. Is there a way to automate that process on resuming from suspend, so that I won`t have to type it manually each time?

I have a Linksys AG300 "Adsl gateway" router/modem. When I download files with Iceweasel, the connection to the internet drops out (the internet connection light goes off, downloading stops). It's been happening for a while with Etch (and whatever version of Iceweasel Etch has), but I've today installed Lenny and it is still happening in Lenny.
My ISP said it could be a problem with the phone line because my computer is connected to an extension, but it does not happen at all if I download with Opera, and I would have thought that the browser wouldn't matter if it was the phone line or something in the router/modem. I'm not that fussed because I can use Opera to get my downloads, and the new version of Iceweasel will let you continue on if the download stops so all is not lost if it stops (it's just annoying). I'd be interested if anyone has any ideas as to why this happens. It seems to be an "Iceweasel thing".

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit on an Asus laptop and the wireless connection disconnects randomly for a while and keeps searching for the signal. When it finds it I have to put in my WEP key again to get it to connect sometimes only once or sometimes 2 or 3 times. This is getting quite annoying.

Sempron 3100+, 512mb 400mhz RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit.From what I've noticed, the computer seems to primarily lock up when an internet browser is open and/or being navigated (I'm testing this observation, now). I've tried Firefox and then installed Chrome; same thing.CTRL+ALT+F1 unresponsive, mouse is frozen.Note that this is an old build given to me by a friend. The build originally had one stick of 512mb and 256mb. I took out the 256 for diagnostic purposes. Additionally, the computer originally had an nVidia 6200 graphics card, which I replaced with a 6600 I had lying around--again for diagnostic purposes. I installed the recommended video drivers respectively. After three re-installations of Ubuntu, 2 different browsers, 2 different graphics cards, running memtest86 and singling out the RAM, and using a can of air to eliminate any overheating issues, I'm unsure what to do next. I have a feeling this is operating system related, though. In BIOS, the CPU fan seems to be running at fine RPMs, but no temperature is given
Do note I am entirely new to the Ubuntu/Linux OS, and wanted a cheap, nice solution for this salvaged PC that I'm giving to my little sister. edit #1: Left the computer idling on desktop with no browser open; seemed okay for hours on end. I opened Chrome to the google homepage (with the Pac-Man flash theme at the time), and it did not freeze then as well when set to idle for hours at a time.

Not sure if I've listed the specs of this machine before, so I'll do it again. 'm running an HP Pavilion 760n with 512MB of RAM and (I think?) a Pentium III processor... not sure on that one right now. It's currently running a laptop version of Ubuntu 10.04.I went to log into my online classes tonight only to find that the computer wasn't responding at all. I did a hot shutdown and restarted it, and now the system isn't detecting the internet connection at all. It should be noted that the connection was working perfectly fine earlier today, perhaps 6 or 7 hours ago.I know it's something to do with my computer and not my router, as I'm on my wireless network from a Windows 7 laptop and it's connecting just fine.
In viewing another thread,..lems+-wireless, I found a bunch of commands that it was said would be helpful diagnosing this issue. That said, below is the output of all the commands that I could think of.
Sudo ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:e0:18:5c:45:7a
inet addr:192.168.2.1 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

I got a new desktop and figured this would be a great oppurtunity to update to 11.3 (from 11.2) while migrating files.. However I have had lots of problems with it, right of the bat. My first installation got messed up right after it was done, so I had to redo everything. Now the system boots up all fine but I am experiencing crashes every once in a while. By crashes I mean nothing works; the system monitor graphs freeze, the clock freezes, system doesnt respond to key strokes. The only remedy is then to "force an unexpected reboot" (ref: IT Crowd). I have a feeling that it has to do with Yast or something related to Yast, as it is the only common denominator between the crashes so far. However the system doesnt crash everytime I start Yast so I cant really say anything conclusively..
I have also realised that when I attach a secondary screen the graphics get kinda screwed as well.. if that makes any sense... Here are my system details: Dell Vostro Desktop with Core i7 64bit processor
8 x 2.8Ghz
6gig ram
graphics card: GeForce GT220
What could be the problem here? btw let me know if anyone wants to see logs from /var/log/messages

I'm not sure how to describe this because no-one else on the internet seems to have had anything even vaguely resembling this problem. I'm trying to install wxPython for openSUSE 11.3 (which seems to be called python-wxGTK which is fine). I don't think it's a problem with that particular package because I seem to remember something going wrong ages ago, the last time I installed something, but it didn't affect that particular install so I paid no notice. I'm sorry, that was a really vague statement and won't help anyone in the slightest. Anyway, the reason I think that event was relevant is that ever since then my Gnome menus have been out of sync - the new package I installed didn't appear on the menu.
Anyway, onto actual useful stuff. Just as a test case (to see that nothing was wrong with wxPython) I installed another small application with zypper (just the standard sudo zypper install moneyplex). zypper didn't complain at all and as far as I know it went perfectly.

My bluetooth manager is dying every few minutes or even every few couple of seconds. This happens when i'm using bluetooth mouse. Mouse works correctly cause i've tested it in windows. In the attachment there is dmesg output. In dmesg i keep geting lines like:
Quote:
[ 1463.864082] usb 4-1: USB disconnect, address 10
[ 1463.864601] btusb_intr_complete: hci0 urb eddf2900 failed to resubmit (19)
followed by reconnecting both, USB dongle and mouse. Then it works for a while and dies again, over and over. It also happens when mouse it idle (no matter if 5 seconds or 5 minutes).[URL]..

I have two servers, both running Ubuntu 11.04 Server. One is a web server, running only a LAMP stack and openssh-server. The other is running server daemons for TeamSpeak and Minecraft. Today, the game server just went down. I can access the LAN by using SSH to connect to the web server, and ping it from there. However, it won't respond to SSH or anything else. The server is a few kilometers from here, so I will be going there tomorrow.
This happened once before, probably about a month ago or something. That time, the web server was running just fine, but the game server was powered off. I thought there had been a power disruption, because when I checked the BIOS settings of the game server, it wasn't set to resume after AC power loss. The web server was set to do this, so it made sense that it would be up and running again after a brief power loss. There were also some news reports about power disruptions in my area.
The thing is, I changed the BIOS settings of the game server to make sure this wouldn't happen again. When I go there tomorrow, I will bring the server back up. However, I would like to know what caused this so that I may prevent it from occurring again. Is there a logfile or something that I can check tomorrow to find the problem?

This can't be duplicated by anything specific, but I know it's not out of RAM at this point. The console keyboard and mouse are inoperational, and the monitor display seems to be going through test patterns, which turns out to be that the monitor is trying to sync to video output which is switching on about once a second. I can ssh into the box and see that many processes that were running are no longer running, for example gnome-session... and that once per second there is a new X process invoked with a different auth-for-gem parameter, per below:
/usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-Kynptf/database -nolisten tcp
(one second later...)
/usr/bin/X :0 -br -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-GfBhRk/database -nolisten tcp

I recently installed the vt6656 wireless pci card that came with my zotac motherboard. I can associate with my ap and get an ip address successfully. When I disconnect my ethernet cable, however, my wireless interface stops responding (can't ping it). The box itself is in a place where I don't have a monitor connected to it so I cant see anything since my ssh session gets killed as soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable.
What would be the reason why the ehternet cable being unplugged, disconnects my wifi card as well? Does something get triggered? I did some testing with iptables, blocking the 8080 traffic to the wired interface, and noticed that the 8080 traffic also gets blocked to the wifi ip. I'm afraid that this never worked properly to begin with.

It has been happening to me since I started to use this laptop from the company for a linux test bed. Several times a day, when I do something from the command line, for example running an application connecting to another host on the internet, etc,it comes to a freeze and does not come out of it. I can not do anything else than a forced reboot from the power button, because the keyboard and the mouse do not respond. This work laptop is a lenovo W500, running on ubuntu jaunty, release 9.04. I have not encountered this problem before with my personal laptop though. My person laptop is a lenovo X61s, running on ubuntu karmic, release 9.10Should I reinstall the work laptop with some other version of ubuntu? Could it be some hardware problem ? What tools should I use to diagnose

I know there already a LOT of posts on the forum about pulse audio. I had some problems upgrading from Karmic to lucid, Pulse just kinda dies, but I left it be. Recently I brought a fresh 1TB hard disk and decided it was time for a clean install of 10.04 to fix that. I am running of a clean install, only additional packages I have pulled down are the Nvidia driver, wine, and VLC.. the rest is 'out of the box' config. Have tried reinstalling 3 or 4 times, I get the same sound problem each time. Pulse works fine to start with, I can play music, play warcraft under wine with sound.
However as time goes on I find that the pulseaudio process takes up more and more cpu time. Eventually it hits about 90% plus then crashes out. The system hangs for a minute, then resumes with no sound. When I run "top" the pulseaudio daemon is no longer running. The only way to get sound back is to manually "Pulseaudio -D" or to reboot the system. This isn't just "a warcraft problem". It happens with Spotify (also under wine) Rthymbox, and VLC. A friend suggested I run the Pulseaudio daemon with a higher cpu importance? Is that sensible? Are there any pages where i can read up on how better to configure pulse? I have read lots of guides about linux sound problems and most seem to be about alsa not pulse.
My hardware info is included below:

I just installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my new Asus Eee PC 1215T, and I'm having trouble getting Internet access. When I first start up or reboot the PC, I'll have network access, but not Internet access. I'm connecting via a WAN at my university, and so the first thing you have to do is "register" the computer on the network (by visiting a certain website on their intranet) before it will allow you to access the Internet. Takes about 3 minutes to register it. I have enough time to *begin* this registration process, but I've tried several times and I can't get all the way through it before I mysteriously lose all network access. Unfortunately this is a brand new machine and came without any OS installed, so there's no way I know of to test whether this is defective hardware or not.
