all my installation have been done using synaptic package manager, but I have come across a situation where I would like to install an application which only has a tar.gz file not a .deb file. How should I go about installing it, do I just unpack to root, or is there a method of installation I should run through.
I'm new to Ubuntu . With windows when you install a app it creates a folder in the drive:c under programs : Where is the install folder on Ubuntu ? AND ' with windows ' there is an exe file ' what type of file is like the exe file''' to run ? or the path to run the app ?
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and had hoped to use Synaptic to find and install Truecrypt. As Synaptic couldn't find it I downloaded it from [URL]. In case it helps the file is called "truecrypt-6.3a-linux-x86.tar.gz". Apart from not knowing how to get a working program from the .tar.gz file, I don't know whether the installation process sorts out where the file should go and puts it there, or whether I have to create a directory for it and put it there myself.
I tried to install the energyxt2 client today but when launching the energyxt2 executable file I get this error:
X Error of failed request: BadImplementation (server does not implement operation) Major opcode of failed request: 140 (MIT-SHM) Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_ShmCreatePixmap) Serial number of failed request: 382
When I try to run this .deb file: [URL]Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libqt4-dbus (>= 4.4.3)On the package installer window.I am running 9.10 and it is newly installed, I am connecting to a university network. Also, I'm having problems downloading things through terminal where it simply says that it can't find the package.
I have clean installed my system to 11.04 and lost some important fonts of course. I am using specialist IPA fonts for some important documents, but the file is in exe form. However, I have that blocked executable bit problem. It's getting really annoying, as now many legitimate programs that I have can't be used on Linux anymore. All I need to do is extract the file and then let Ubuntu install the ttf (as it has done so in the past).
I would like to try out the newest version of Synkron (1.6.1) on Ubuntu 10.04. How do I install it on a 64bit AMD machine? It is not in the default repositories and there are no deb packages for 64bit at [URL]? The deb version listed is for i383 1.6.0.
I am having problems installing the OOO_3.2.1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz install package from openoffice.org. When I unpack the tar.gz file, I get another folder labeled OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502, which as a folder named DEBS that has number of .deb files. How do I install the mentioned file or files? I would like to use the download for installation, so I can get the updated version of OpenOffice, and not use the Ubuntu repository.
I have been having problems with Ubuntu. I just downloaded it yesterday and burned it to CD. However, when attempting to install it, I get errors. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the exact error but it stops the install. I will give further information later but wanted to ask if anyone has heard of this happening and if so, what the problems might be? I checked it with the MD5 and it appears to be a valid file, but the disk is giving me errors!
A tutorial says in order to add new fonts, take you font file and put them into a newly created directory inside your home folder and name it ".fonts". Reset and they will be ready to use.
I'm not able to do this from Nautilus View because of the error that I do not have permission to do so.
I have made the dir in terminal using sudo mkdir
moving the actual fonts from my desktop into the actual folder. I don't know how to do it.
I am getting a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Install gave message to the effect: can't find boot file. Now I can't boot with any version or even get a prompt.
I d/l the Sunflower File Manager tgz file to install into Ubuntu. I already have the Build-Essential package installed. When I go to the directory I extracted the Sunflower's tgz files to and type in a shell "./configure" I get an error: "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory" Well, yes... looking into the Sunflower directory there is no such file or subfolder there. Now I admit I'm not an Ubuntu expert but IIRC I've done a few tgz installs like this and they went fine.
I have downloaded WINE and I have downloaded the WoW install.exe file and all goes good during installation (after i simply double clicked the install.exe file) but about half way through I got an error message that "installer is unable to read file C:/commen files/world of warcraft. I tried teh same thing on Z: and it did the same thing. What can I do to fix this or how else can i download/install WoW? i'm not running windows and linux, just straight up Ubuntu, nothing else.
I have been using Ubuntu for some time now and am feeling up for a bit of a change but don't want to change completely. I thought of trying openSUSE or Mandriva out before but they didn't feel right and I have heard so much about Fedora I was thinking about trying that but since I don't have any discs and nor can I boot from USB, I started thinking about other ways of installing it to my laptop.
Is there any way I could mount it and add it to the grub/menu.lst so that the iso is loadable when I load into the Grub menu and I can continue its installation from there or, I have heard about a program called UNetbootin which can apparently do the job for, including downloading the .iso.
I switched to Ubuntu about a month ago and have been loving every bit of it so far Today, I decided it was time to switch from having ubuntu installed within windows (through wubi) into creating a separate partition for itself.
I tried UN-installing using the wubi-uninstaller file but that did not work. Tried removing from the Add/Remove box in Windows 7 but neither wubi nor ubuntu were listed. SO I ended up manually deleting ubuntu from the C: and then using EasyBCD to remove Ubuntu from the boot menu. It may all sound great but I noticed that my hard disk is missing around 25GB of space. I even re-installed windows 7 but that hasn't changed this. It may well be that my hard disk is just old (~2 years) but I think it maybe because of an incorrect UN-install of wubi. Having read through forum posts around the interwebs all evening, this seems to be a problem that a few people share.
ps: I intend on installing Ubuntu again once this hard disk issue is resolved!
I am a 'newbie' to ubuntu (with 45+ years as a 'computer nerd'). I am trying to follow the instructions for installing the Flash plug-in so I can view some of the action on webpages. I get on terminal and the prompt is mike@mike-laptop. The instructions say to key in "# rpm -Uvh <rpm_package_file>". I have tried as many variations of this command as I can think of with no response. I am assuming that my interpretation of <rpm_package_file> is incorrect.
I have Dell Wireless N-card 1520 on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. I have installed Ubuntu10.04 in it. My network card was not able to detect wireless connections. I have even installed 'Windows Wireless Driver' using ndiswrapper. I have latest driver for card. But when i click install .inf file , nothing happens or gets installed.
i have one partition of 45 Gb...and other of 250 Gb in which windows 7 has been installed..i booted from ubuntu 10.10 CD and then i chose the installation option on desktop...but when i selected the partition of 45GB for installation..the error message said that "there is no root file system on the drive, set it from partition options"..
I am trying to install opencv on ubuntu. I have been following the directions exactly as given in the readme, and all goes well until I enter sudo make install, and get this error:
CMake Error at cmake_install.cmake:61 (FILE): file Internal CMake error when trying to open file: /home/iochinome/workspace/trunk/opencv/release/install_manifest.txt for writing.

When I'm doing an installation, I select the installation from CD/DVD option for CentOS, but then I don't know how to specify that it should use an anaconda-ks.cfg file that is either on a USB key (or on a Samba network share).
How could I install using the installation DVD, as well as a kickstart file that would specify which packages to enable and other installation settings?
I have a copy of AutoCAD, and tried installing it, but the setup.exe file is apparently unexecutable in ubuntu. I tried changing it to executable, but the disc is closed and is in read-only. Does this mean that I can only use CAD on my windows laptop?
alright I have seen some threads on this but they are all old and seem to predate the "wisdom" of the "all" architecture on all the bloody ubuntu packages.
I went to the tomcat website which doesn't even have deb packages. Then I thought to search the ubuntu package repository, nothing seems to have i386 packages for me to install and then get the libs with getlibs. I HAVE to have a 32bit version of tomcat to run orkweb so I can record my phone calls on my voip line.
what would be really great is if anyone has or knows how to build a 64-bit war file for orktrack and orkweb since I have the source code
I tried to install ffmpeg on 7.04(Fiesty Fawn). when i ran ./configure from terminal window, i got error regarding c compiler that unable to make executable file.
