View 9 RepliesI want to download and install Ubuntu to run alongside Windows 7 in a dual boot configuration. and downloaded the Windows Installer, but when I try to launch it I get an error message which I captured and attached to this post. What's really wierd is that once the message is displayed, I can't get rid of it. Even running the Task Manager to try to close the message doesn't work. I literally have to restart the computer to get rid of the message!
Am I suppose to be downloading the Windows Installer (Wubi) to a CD first where I run it from there? If so, the instructions don't mention that. Can't I download it directly to my C: drive and then run it from there? If so, why am I getting the error message?
I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
The only possibility of those is the CD being bad. But I've used it before, recently, and it was fine. I will burn another one from my other computer and try, but it shouldn't be doing this.
Question: If I plan to only use Ubuntu on this computer (no dual boot) should I make the /,swap and /home partitions all Primary or some logical, or does it even matter?
Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.

I've got a 200GB hard drive, using an ECS SiS 755 A2 motherboard w/1.1b BIOS.
I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

After restart ubuntu was showing on multi boot screen, selected it. Then the system asked me to ESC installation or not, i didn't Esc. The Ubuntu screen was showing, but all of a sudden an error message saying INSTALLATION FAILED occurred.

i'm running ubuntu 10.04 and windows vista on my laptop and I installed Dos box on ubuntu quite some time ago, when i went to mount my d drive (like i usually do in windows) I got the error message "directory D: does not exist" i tried to fix it myself but i gave up because it wasnt that important. A while later i read on a webpage that "Linux doesnot employ the concept of drive letters" so i thought this must be the reason for this error message but why would there be dosbox for linux if that was the case
View 2 Replies View Relatedi finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.
Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.
Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

I have a single harddisk partitioned with Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7 installations. I installed Windows first and then Ubuntu, after resizing partitions and adding a new one for Ubuntu. Win7 did not appear in the Grub2 boot menu. I added it (sda3), but on rebooting, I get the message "BOOTMGR is missing/Press Ctrl+Alt_Del to restart".
I understand that Win7 might have put its boot manager in another partition, and sda1 had FAT. I added sda1 as another grub2 entry, but when I try that, I get the error message "Windows Boot Manager/ Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause... Status 0xc0000225/ Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." Attached are fdisk and parted outputs; and the grub2 files I created. How do I get Windows 7 to boot up?
At the Ubuntu.ork front page, it promises:

What exactly is meant my this? Does this mean it is an easier way to install the dual boot with Windows? (I am using Windows-7 on a new PC.) Or does it mean it will install Ubuntu under Windows? I assumed it meant the latter.
In any case, I downloaded it - a mere 1024K, scanned it and ran it. I get a stubborn error box with the message:

And that box will not go away - no matter what I press, including the [X] button in the upper corner, the box reappears. I had to go into Process Explorer to kill pyrun.exe and its parent, pyl5E39.tmp.exe before the [Cancel] button would close it for good.
I could not find doc on this so I don't know what it really wants as a prerequisite to running wubi.
I am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:
7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.
So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:
/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.

I have about 170 Gigabyte free at the last of my hard. I have windows 7 and suse linux installed on the machine. When I try to install ubunto. I start to create the partitions manually because I want to add it as a third operating system on my PC. Anyway I create the 4 partitions /boot - / - /var - /home. I burn another cd and do the same ... the same problem.
I try to create the partitions at the end of the hard disk not the beginning although I am sure that there is no error in the hardware but the same message. Lastly I change the boot to be created in sda 9. The same problem, when I do everything. I download Linux mint another operating system and do the same points. The same error message appeared by the way the boot is being damaged after restarting and I have to fix it from suse linux cd.
1. While installing Fedora 12 i got this error "Isolinux disk error 20; AX=4280, drive EF". I run Ubuntu 9.10 on same system but now getting Error on installing Fedora 12 using a writeable CD to install that. A friend of mine install fedora from the same CD. View 2 Replies View RelatedI decided it was time to reinstall Windows 7 because it became increasingly slow. I know that there's a different solution to solve this problem, but as a user I'm just more satisfied with the noob friendliness of Windows. However, I know that it has its drawbacks so I had a dual boot setup with Wubi (30GB). My old configuration was as follows:
C: partition of size ~80GB with Windows 7 x64 installed
D: partition of size ~400GB with data and a wubi ubuntu at D:/ubuntu
So what I did was this:
- Backup all my personal files and D:/ubuntu on a external hdd
- Wipe the partitions using the windows installer
- Create a C: of 100GB and a D: of 380GB
- install windows 7 x64 on the C: partition
Now I would like to restore my backup of the old D:/ubuntu to a working dual boot system. I realize I may have missed some opportunities and the data may be gone, but I only found out about that when it was too late. I have tried installing wubi, and replacing the new ubuntu folder with the old one, but this did not work.

I'm trying to install ubuntu from a disk I got with a Ubuntu manual magazine, but once I choose the install option, the logo glows for a couple minutes then freezes and nothing happens. The same happens for running it without installation. Does anyone know what I should do? I'm currently downloading it onto a USB stick to attempt to boot it from that.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 or 10.10 on my laptop, which also has a 200 GB USB drive attached. Now, I am trying to go back and use the installer to repartition the disk. I noted that the scan of the external drive took about an hour, because I was on a webinar while it was happening. It would be nice if Installer noticed and asked if I really intended to sit by for an hour while an external drive was scanned.
When I went into the partitioner, there was another scan of several minutes, and then when I downsized a partition on the internal drive from 76G to 46G, there was yet another lengthy scan on the external drive. So, I know about this, and it's user error that I forgot to disconnect the drive, but it would still be nice if Ubuntu with some clue about what's most likely my intention, i.e. to NOT install on an external drive.
I have trouble installing ubuntu on my desktop machine. I had Mint before, reinstalled Win7 and wanted to upgrade to newest release as I didn't use Linux for some time.

Gives error message permission denied. I've seen this in your forums but I still haven't found the fix. I've tried the latest release Wubi downloader too. This one is ran from a CD. Version 10.04
The Install program is failing to see the hard disk!
Now heres the really weird bit. The live cd can see the drive just fine.
I have created partitions using gparted and the disktool also sees the drive just fine but as soon as I go back to the installer it shows no hard disk!
It's a SATA drive which I suspect might be a part of the problem.
Is there a way I can install without the install program?
Is there a way to make the install program see the drive?
This is ubuntu 9.10 desktop.

I have a Dell Poweredge 2970 2x3.0 GHz AMD 64bit dual core, Perc 5/i controller, and 2 brand new Fujitso SAS 15K 146GB drives.
Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit from USB. At the point of detecting disks, the installer only recognizes the USB. The installation was created using Pendriveinstaller ver1.8.0.1 per Ubuntu Server web site instructions. I have the drives configured as 2 separate raid 0 arrays using the bios raid configurator. The drives have been initialized. (Tried before with a single Raid 1 array, but had same issue and since have read Ubuntu support for hardware raid is not great, so was going to bypass hardware raid for now).
I've seen some chatter on here about opening a terminal at this point and removing dmraid but don't see an option for terminal only shell.
Although I have been running Ubuntu for about 1 year I still regard myself as a Newbee! I have got away with not knowing anything about the Terminal or Command Lines. I am happy with Ubuntu and have become familiar with the OS and all the software I require. However, I have started to receive an error message which states, DISK FAILURE IS IMMINENT Does this really mean that my hard disk needs to be replaced or could there be something else that needs "tweeking"? I am running two operating systems: Ubuntu 10.4 and Windows Vista - but am using Ubuntu about 99% of the time. Everything is running OK except for the error message. What is the best approach to address the issue?

When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.

I tried to install Ubuntu server 10.04 and 10.10, both 64 bit, having similar results. Also I have tried enabling and disabling the RAID card. On 10.04 installer hangs preparing disk partitioning phase at 43%, on 10.10 hangs at the same stage 45%. Must I download something and apply before that phase?
Wanting to dual boot XP with UBUNTU. Live CD verified good.

Originally I had two partitions for Windows xp of 100 gig each. I cleared / backed up the second partition and created two 50 gig partitions, splitting the second into two linux (using Gparted) partitions labelled root and swap.
Disk Utility sees this hdd as a RAID component. It is connected through a RAID controller.
The installer (in allocate drive space step) doesn't see them for some reason.
Hardware:
AMD Athlon 64+clawhammer processor
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
