iam trying to scp files between two remote computers, i get the following error:
Host key verification failed.
lost connection
What i am trying to do is : scp u1@ip1:/source_path u2@op2:/destination_path
I am able to ssh into both machines fine, so i know that works. I tried google for this but couldn't make much of the results.
I have a problem while copying files from a remote computer to my local one using the scp command. I am sure that I am using it correctly, please check it below:

The interesting point is that the above returned statement is one of the Environment variables set on both the machines that are necessary to work with a toolkit called Geant4. Here is what I get when I type 'printenv | grep G4' just to show you (note the statement in bold):

The other thing that I would like to mention is that these Geant4 Env. Variables are loaded each time a new (bash) shell is started as a result of the bash login script.
I had to leave rather suddenly (decision was Germany's, not fiancee's), and now am in the States again, but my files are still there. There are lots of things (mainly photos) on there, that I would like to have here. SOME stuff is on CD/DVD, but there is stuff that isn't.
Is there some way that I could access her computer and just copy files to mine?
(I picture two folders, one on hers, one on mine, and I just dragging an icon from one to the other - but I don't suppose anything's THAT easy...)
Naturally, her computer would have to be on, and I assume she could not be using it herself. Naturally also, I would get her permission first...
I assume that it would take a while, but if it were as simple as the icon thing I described above, then I could just go away and come back later. I assume something would be running to make sure that the destination file and source file were identical before proceeding to the next file.
[Before you suggest: why doesn't she just copy the files to DVD's and mail them to me? She is not all that computer saavy, I'm afraid, and trying to explain it all, including the exact folder names and such, Plus, how to use a DVD/CD burner and software... Plus translate it all into German... If I were rich enough, I could just go there and do what I needed, but that is not in the cards for the present. ]

Say for example that I want to synchronize my /home/Documents directory with <username>@example.com:/home/Documents What's the easiest way to update the folders in both directions, so that new/updated files on my home computer get transferred to the remote computer, and new/updated files on the remote computer get transferred to my home computer?

First couple times i tried i typed in

I realized that my laptop's firewall was blocking the packets, so i created a custom rule that allows all TCP packets on port 3389. So i fired up rdesktop again. Now it pops back with:

But instantaneously, not after 15 seconds (not sure if thats significant or not.) I checked my firewall's log and it allowed the tcp packets.
I have an Asus eee 1000. Was running Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix quite happily for some months until recently when I had some problems and decided to reinstall. Unfortunately that is when my real problems began. I have tried using various CD.s with Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook remix.
Both give the same error - The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error
This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
I tried using an SD card to install - that also gave errors. I tried installing Windows as much as I hate it and, annoyingly, that installed without any problems whatsoever. Then I tried using the Alternate Install disc. That gave me a different error - did everything and apparently installed a "basic" system but failed to install software. Struggled to find an answer to that. How I can get Ubuntu 10.04 back on my netbook. As it stands at the moment I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I will have to install Windows or buy a new netbook - this seems preposterous!
I have seen that many people have this error and so it seems like some sort of bug. The only clue I had is that I did succeed in installing Ubuntu on my second 32 GB SD (the netbook has two (an 8 GB and a 32 GB). Unfortunately this SD appears much slower than the first so I erased it and went back to trying to get it on the 8 GB as before. Now it won't install on either - gives the same error. I do not believe that both my SD.s can be faulty and so I can only assume that somehow they both need erasing or formatting or something before I can reinstall.
I have about 170 Gigabyte free at the last of my hard. I have windows 7 and suse linux installed on the machine. When I try to install ubunto. I start to create the partitions manually because I want to add it as a third operating system on my PC. Anyway I create the 4 partitions /boot - / - /var - /home. Automatically it choose to install the boot on sda not sda 9 as the /boot was sda9. I click install.

I burn another cd and do the same ... the same problem.
I try to create the partitions at the end of the hard disk not the beginning although I am sure that there is no error in the hardware but the same message. Lastly I change the boot to be created in sda 9. The same problem, when I do everything. I download Linux mint another operating system and do the same points. The same error message appeared by the way the boot is being damaged after restarting and I have to fix it from suse linux cd.

The only possibility of those is the CD being bad. But I've used it before, recently, and it was fine. I will burn another one from my other computer and try, but it shouldn't be doing this.
Question: If I plan to only use Ubuntu on this computer (no dual boot) should I make the /,swap and /home partitions all Primary or some logical, or does it even matter?
I want to transfer files (a music folder) between two Linux computers. After searching for the best way to do this, I've seen that there are lots of ways of doing this. I know this has been asked a lot, everywhere and all the time. The main problem with this is that there is no clear, recent consensus on one best way to do this task in 2011 for Linux beginners (even depending on some parameters).

I have a new network attached storage unit that I'm trying to transfer my data to. On this NAS, it has a very basic linux installed with SSH enabled. Browsing through the programs installed on it, i found smbclient. Am I able to copy files directly from my old NAS to my new one using smbclient?It would sure beat transfering 950GB from my old NAS through a computer then onto my new NAS.

The laptop sees its public files and the public files folder on the desktop computer - looks fine. The desktop computer acts differently. Both systems show an entry of "unknown type" in the directory listing, for the public files directory. But whereas a right click on the directory entry on the laptop offers "open" the same operation on the desktop computer offers "open gedit". When I double click the entries on the laptop, entries appear on the main screen. If I double click the entries on the main screen, the directory contents are displayed. But, if I doubleclick the directory entries on the desktop computer 1- I get a black box that says there has been a crash in gvfs-1.6.6-1.fc14 and an error message box tells me Dbus error org.freedesktop.DBus.ERROR.NoReply: Message did not received a reply.

instead of

But I never use scp to copy a file locally. So I wonder if there is a way to make scp fail if both (the source and destination) arguments refer to local files.

I did a google search and found out that maybe the reason of this error could be due to the fact that my current server doesn't have SSH. On my desktop I logged into the live cd and started copying over a big file (1.5 GB) (i.e. copying from the desktop computer to the server).
