Ubuntu :: Lots Of Errors / Python2.6 / Import CommandNotFound?
Jan 13, 2010When executing different programs varying from the Ubuntu Software Manager to pstotxt and lots of other programs I get tons of errors that have to do with Python2.6, whatever it is. I think it got corrupted since my netbook turned of while installing some (Dutch) language packs.The smaller problem, is that the language packs failed to install properly, and I can see some Dutch sentences between the English ones sometimes...The major prolem, is that somehow a lot of programs won't work anymore, mainly terminal programs. pstotxt is one of any examples. Installing software doesn't always work because of these errors.

Ubuntu :: Wine Gives Lots Of Errors And Runs Really Slowly?
Jan 17, 2010I try to do anything in wine, including winecfg, I get a lot of errors, and the program runs really slowly. Here are the errors

I get this error for every program, so I do not think it is an error with the program. If fixing this will change anything like making it faster any help would be appreciated. Oh, I also can only run a few programs. I can't run things like WMP or itunes, and I think this may be the cause.

Ubuntu :: Copying Lots And Lots Of Data (and Preserving Emblems)?
Oct 26, 2010I am currently in the process of moving around 20TB of data from one server to another. Security is not a concern, since the data are freely available to anyone on our network anyway. There are a couple of things that I'm trying to decide on:
(1) protocol choice
Of all the choices I have--nfs, ftp, scp, rsync, samba--has anyone done any benchmarking to show which would be the fastest/most robust transfer protocol? I know nfs has slow write speeds for synchronous transfers. Asynchronous would be faster, but less robust. I'm leaning toward rsync since it performs md5sums to confirm the file transfers. (Remember if there's a 1 in a billion chance that a byte will get corrupted, then I'll have 20,000 corrupt bytes in the transfer.)
(2) Nautilus emblems
We use emblems in Nautilus to categorize files. The old and the new server have the same directory structure.Is there any way to copy the Nautilus emblems from the old server to the new server. What I want is that if a user had marked a particular file with a star on the old server, then that file would be marked with a star on the new server when he/she logs in.

Apr 22, 2010This box was formerly running Ubuntu Server x64 9.04 on the same hardware and ran just fine. I have now turned it into a media center box running Ubuntu Desktop x64 9.10. Since this has been installed it freezes about once a day. When that happens I can't do anything with it, can't even SSH. Also, and current SSH sessions die and exit. I have checked every log under /var/log but I have not found the problem. There does not seem to crash after any certain amount of time, just after several hours of sitting idle.
Below are a few examples of the last entires in several logs. Note for the clocksource error I have already forced it to use different ones in my kernel options and rebooted but it still crashes, still with no errors to tell me what went wrong. I also know the rsyslog error is caused by a bug and would not cause the crash.

I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

May 20, 2010Recently while at school, my trackpad stopped working completely. When I log out to my login screen it works, and as well as kde. I use compiz btw in gnome.[SOLVED I THINK] --> My boot splash doesn't show up until its fully loaded and won't show in the correct resolution.Every so often, the UI flips out and won't let me click menus or text fields or use my keyboard at all.
The trackpad is a setting i bet. BUT I looked everywhere for a setting that is making it not work.[SOLVED I THINK] --> The splash is ok, I'm not worried about it, but I wished it looked nicer on my computer D:The UI freak out is annoying and trouble some as it happens randomly in use.

Dec 24, 2010i'm in the process of migrating from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6. My main Drupal page won't load. I have been stepping through the index.php Eclipse and XDebug.The error I'm receiving is:"can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'".i think the sock file setting is correct; it matches what the MSQL control panel has.
First question: if my.cnf says the sock file is in /var/run/mysqld, why do I keep getting the error that it can't open /tmp/mysql.sock? How do I tell Drupal to use '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'?
Second question: the mysql command-line interface (i.e., after i have logged into mysql from the terminal) doesn't mention a port from the listing obtained by entering 's'. is it possible that 3306 is a mistake? (I have tried commenting out the port reference and i still get the error identified at the top of the thread.)

May 20, 2011I had OpenERP completely installed and running just fine. All basic install instructions just worked out of the box on Ubuntu 11.04. Now, we also are going to develop our own web site. For that we needed a web development environment. Due to the small size of our home business, we have to do it all on one PC. So I went ahead and installed everything needed to get Drupal going, among which I had to install:
LAMP
Drupal
Memcached
Memcache
Postfix
Tomcat
and other packages.It all works like a charm, but now my openerp-web crashes when I start it with the following message:

For those that do not know it: it is a module that interfaces with the OpenERP server software to allow people to access the system through their web browser, effectively eliminating the use to install a client on their PC. Very practical for our light weight laptop that we use in combination with my PC.
Normally one would connect by browsing to [URL] and automatically get connected with the OpenERP environment.Now, however, that does not work anymore with the above error as a result. Do you guys have any idea if I have to configure something in Apache to get this working again? Possibly with instructions, otherwise I'd get lost again in no time.

Jan 17, 2011I upgraded to 10.10 a few months ago. All was well until a week or so ago, my PC was incredibly slow to respond to anything - mouse clicks, etc. After investigating, I found Evolution using 90% of my RAM - I have 4G. I restarted the PC, started up Evolution and everything was better for a very short while. I then found Evolution using 2Gb+ again later that day. I have noticed that immediately upon startup of Evolution, watching top, evolution uses 900Mb+ Virt and 450+Mb Res. If I open a single email, it jumps to 1300+ Virt, 500+ Res. The more I read a few more emails, the more it jumps.
I have updated everything possible via Synaptic. I only have a handful of accounts - probably 3 POP3 that download to local folders, and about 5 IMAP (GMail) based ones. Nothing excessive IMHO. Now, Evolution is basically useless. All I can do is open it, check email, and close it as soon as possible. I'd rather not switch to another email client - I did that back in 10.04 when I switched off Thunderbird in favor of Evolution because of all the Evolution integration in Ubuntu/Gnome.

Feb 27, 2011I have installed debian-6.0.0-i386-DVD on my vmware. I want to install php 5.2 on it. But whatever mirror i'm using in my source.list i'm not getting my php 5.2.17 installed. Is there a debian mirror that i can use in my source.list to install php 5.2.15? I do not want to install 5.3, because it's not working for drupal 6 yet. I'm new to linux. i'm using apg -get update to receive the update.
