I installed windows 7 and then installed ubuntu and I chose the option to install along side other operating systems, but I don't see an option to load into windows when ever I start up my system. Anyone know how I can correct this? Both are on two separate hard drives, I just want to be able to load into windows for my iphone to back it up into itunes.

i've had windows all my life. heard about ubuntu 10.0. thought i tried it out. i tried using some dual installation with windows or something (im running, well WAS running vista, btw) i dont know WHAT i did. i got ubuntu working, but Windows does NOT show up in the boot menu?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with 2 Hard drives one of which has Windows XP Pro installed. I installed Red Hat Linux 7.2 on the other drive choosing LILO as the boot loader. When I reboot LILO only displays Red Hat 7.2 When I boot Red Hat and go into KDE boot settings I can see that hda has Windows NT. hdb has Red Hat 7.2. I then tried to make the Windows NT partition the default entry. When I try to confirm this an error displays warning me of danger if I proceed. Is there any way to make LILO recognize Windows (preferably without having to reinstall Red Hat), perhaps by installing another bootloader application!

In order to use each OS I manually hav to go and change the "first boot device" option in BIOS setting and boot into required OS. View 1 Replies View RelatedHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu, I've installed it in Virtual Box and through Wubi on other computers but this was the first time that I've done a live install on my production computer. I had problems from the get go, I was using a Live CD of 10.04 (64 bit AMD) to install it and when it got to the part about choosing a partition no drives would show up at all. Eventually after some searching around, I discovered that Using an Alternate install CD would work. I did that, installing Ubuntu into one of the free partitions I had set up prior to this. Eventually my system turned on but the monitor went to sleep so I had to hit E on the grubmenu and change something to nomodeset (or something like that) so that I could see the screen. I installed Compiz and it was all good from there.
Except for One issue, I cannot boot Into windows at all, it doesn't show up on the bootloader even though the partition shows up in Gparted. I've tried updating Grub2 with no results, here are the results of Sudo fdisk -l

I have an ASUS 1005HA. Recently installed a new hard drive and made 3 partitions. One for Windows 7, one for Ubuntu, one for storage. I installed windows 7 first. Then, I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook remix. It loads all the way to the end, tells me to take the CD out when its done, but when I restart, its like nothing happened. Windows 7 boots straight up to itself.
I tried redoing the GRUB loader while using the CD, but that didnt work either. So, how do I make it so I can see both OS? Because windows is running superior right now on my netbook, and I don't like that. But I need it for work.
GRUB2 does not show Windows-XP Pro in the menu anymore.
Probably already posted before; however each case usually is somehow different. I use Ubuntu only occasionally to learn how it works.
After the latest update using Update Manager, quite a few packages were installed without any problem. However GRUB2 does not show the Windows-XP(Prof) partition in the menu anymore. Now I can't boot Windows because I can't select what is not shown.

It is already the second time that GRUB2 changes the menu items as it pleases, messing up the bootmenu. How can I repair the bootmenu in order to be able to boot Windows-XP, as before the updates ?
The current Ubuntu version is now 10.4 LTS The current GRUB version is "GNU GRUB version 1.98 Ubuntu10"
My system had Windows Vista initially. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit initially and everything was fine. I was able to use both the OS. Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit in the same partition as Ubuntu 10.04 by dividing it into two equal halves. Now I am able to boot into 32 bit 10.10 but when I try to boot into the old 64 bit 10.04 it says unable to mount /root/proc, and some other "Unable to mount.." messages and it gives me a command prompt. I entered into 32 bit 10.10 OS and did update-grub2 and when I restart, the boot menu has no option for 64 bit 10.04 version at all... How can I restore my Ubuntu 64 bit 10.04 and boot into it..

I am trying to install ubuntu on my brand new fresh out of the box Asus Eee PC 1018P but the problem is when I hit esc during the boot to get to bios to select boot from usb, the usb doesn't show up as an option. I also tried hitting f2 and making it an option to boot from usb but that doesn't seem to work either.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.
Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?
Ive been using it for a few days and it kept reminding me to update some files. (about 200mb worth) after it finished installing i rebooted but it won't show me a login screen. it only shows me a commmand line. it allows to 'exit' and then it boots windows.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI know this is an Ubuntu Forum (duh) but I'm having trouble booting Fedora. I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 loaded on to my HDD and GRUB boots both of them just fine. I installed Fedora 15 on dev/sda7 (a clean partition) and I'm using the same swap for both Linux distros. I am not that new to Linux but I still need fairly detailed instructions.
My problem: Fedora does not show in the boot menu and I'm not sure how to get it there.
I've heard about something going funny when the kernel updates and something about chainloading but I'm no expert on either.
I'm currently running Karmic 9.10 in dual boot with Windows 2000. My computer has automatically updated and installed kernels 2.6.31-17, -19 and -20 (They show up in Synaptic as installed).
However, the newest kernel choice in my GRUB menu is 2.6.31-16-generic (followed by -15 and -14). These all start without any errors.
Question: Why haven't the newer updates shown up in GRUB for booting purposes?
Could it be a question that I didn't answer correctly some time back about accepting or not accepting an update or change in GRUB?
How can this be changed? The new kernels do not show up in Start-Up Manager either.
I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I created a Fedora 13 x86 live image on USB using [URL] I've set it to boot using the USB and when it does I see the 10 sec countdown (or the options if I press a key), I tried all the options to boot the image but the screen just turns black for a few seconds and then the the monitor goes into "power saving mode" and nothing happens (I waited like 10 minutes). What's going on? I am trying to install fedora into an empty (secondary) HD, in the main HD I only have a win XP, and I don't want to burn a cd/dvd that's why I am trying to boot the USB.

Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.
i have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,

I just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and now I can't boot into Windows 7 on this dual boot desktop. I usually do a clean install but with a laptop and desktop a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu on each machine it's getting very tiring with 4 os's so opted for the upgrade this time.
During the installation there was a window that game up about upgrading grub and what devices to install it on. The help box was not very complete and seemed to say to click all the check boxes which included the main drive and it's partitions including windows. During the install somewhere it said something like grub could not be installed on one of the devices which I think was sda6 which is probably the Windows 7 partition.
So how would I get the option of booting into Windows 7 on startup as now I only get a blank black screen when I click on the Windows 7 option upon bootup? I hope I don't have to reinstall one or both os's again from scratch as this is becoming to much work to do on two systems every 6 months, especially with the amount of programs I have installed.
how to be able to add windows 7 to my grub menu or to even be able to boot to windows 7. I am currently unable to do it and my system just automatically goes straight to ubuntu. I've tried holding down SHIFT during startup and all that appears in my list is ubuntu entries and a memtest entry. My windows 7 files are still intact because I can see the drive through ubuntu and see all my files. Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

I'm trying to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu WITHOUT using Grub. This is to support Bitlocker encryption.
I followed this guide, and now when I select Ubuntu I get a Grub> prompt and no ubuntu.
I feel like I'm halfway there, I just need to get Grub to load correctly or something.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Ubuntu on a machine that already has Windows 7 on one partition. Obviously I intend to install it on the other free partition. So I downloaded the iso burnt it onto the disk and pop in the disk and the boot the machine. The installation screen comes up I selected the first option (Try Ubuntu without installation), I just see a prompt after a few seconds and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. Unable to detect a signal, The monitor goes into standby. The same thing happens if I use "install Ubuntu" option as well. I downloaded minimal install version Ubuntu and tried to install with that. since its old school installation, the installation completed without any errors, but when I restart the grub come up and when I select to boot into Ubuntu, I see the same behavior i.e. the screen goes blank and never boots to anything. This is a machine on which I was using 10.4 until yesterday.
