Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Virtualbox From 3.0.12 To 3.1.4

Mar 25, 2010

I'm currently using the PUEL version of Virtualbox 3.0.12 and whenever I open it, it prompts me to update - see screengrab.

Clicking that link and choosing to open it via the package installer (see screengrab) results in the error screen below - another screengrab.

I then realised the deb file was named Jaunty, so went to the Vbox website to download the Karmic file.

Running that via package installer produces the same error - Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'virtualbox-3.0'

Do I need to remove the old version first? If so, how do I do that (given that this is the PUEL version not the open-source version) and will my existing virtual machines (I've got WinXP and ChromeOS) be safe and still work afterwards?

My reason for wanting to upgrade is to virtually try Ubuntu 10.4 which I just cannot get to run or install in Vbox (either from a CD or from the iso image)

Ubuntu Installation :: No Audio In VirtualBox After Upgrade To 11.04?

May 5, 2011

I just upgraded to 11.04, and apart from an initial freakout because I didn't realize why all my settings were borked*, I haven't had any difficulties... until today. I ran my virtual WinXP machine (VirtualBox) to watch some streaming Netflix, and the sound didn't work. Sound still works under Ubuntu just fine. No idea why it didn't survive in my virtual machine.

I noticed when I started that it said there was an upgrade for the VirtualBox software, so I did that, but that didn't fix it either. I'm using PusleAudio for the Host Driver and ICH AC97 for the audio controller on my virtual XP machine. These worked before the upgrade, now... not so much. I tried switching the driver to ALSA and the controller to SoundBlaster 16 (and other different available combos, etc), to no avail.

* It turns out that crap pile, Unity, did away with all my nice custom panel layouts and configs and replaced them with something ugly, unwanted, and non-intuitive. I'm using "Ubuntu Classic" now because Unity is horrible.

Ubuntu Installation :: VirtualBox Does Not See Attached Drives After Upgrade

May 3, 2011

Upgraded. VBox (Win7 - 64bit) runs well, but does not see attached drives. Removed the drives, and attempting to re-attach, usually results in an immediate Windows 7 crash. Even when attached (lucky) - the drives do not re-attach after a VBox reboot. Is there some easy way to downgrade to 10.10??

Ubuntu Installation :: After Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 On VirtualBox - Can't Get To Desktop Or Terminal

May 12, 2011

When I fired up 10.10 this morning on VirtualBox as usual (running on Windows 7 machine), I got prompted to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so I followed the prompts and after about 4 hours or more, my vm restarted and says 11.04 is running, however, I never get to the Ubuntu desktop. Im stuck at some startup screen that shows the Ubuntu logo and I definitely cant see the System, Peferences, etc. menus at the top left.

One thing I came across is that 11.04 is designed for use with touch screen devices and 3D, and thus 3D acceleration is required in the VirtualBox settings, but even after checking that option and restarting I still couldnt get to the desktop.

Also, during the install I came to a step where I was prompted to discard files no longer needed at which point I agreed to have them deleted (41MB or so of files). Maybe I should have just kept everything.

Did I miss a step or is it not good practice to upgrade on a vm in this manner, meaning it's better to always download the .iso and do a fresh install?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting Into Grub With No Menu After Upgrade

May 3, 2011

I had Ubuntu 10 running on vmware machine. It ran fine. I upgraded to version 11, but now when the machine restarts I do not get any menu, I just get his:
GNU BRUB version 1.98-1ubunutu7
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.
grub>

And that is it! No menu, no list of options, nothing. If I type "ls" I get:
(hd0) (hd0,5) (hd0,1) (fd0)

I can enter "root (hd0,1)" which gives me:
(hd0,1): Filesystem is ext2.

Then typing "kernel /boot/vm" and pressing tab shows:
vmlinuz-2.6.32-27-generic vmcoreinfo-2.6.32-27-generic vmlinuz-2.6.35-28-generic vmcoreinfo-2.6.35-28-generic vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic

There is no /boot/grub/menu.lst but there is /boot/grub/grub.cfg which seems fine as far as I can tell. Did I somehow end up with an older grub which is looking for menu.lst? I have other machines running Ubuntu and if I boot into them I seem to get a GRUB4DOS etc. slightly different version. The grub version shown above is 1.98 but I read somewhere Ubuntu uses version 2? Actually I found another post which suggests that this is the correct grub version for Ubuntu 11. How can I tell what menu file grub is looking for where it is looking and why its not finding or using it? It should work...

I tried purging grub and re-installing it on /dev/sda but still no joy. Here's the info from the Boot Info Script. I've also tried uncommenting GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub but that doesn't help. How I can get the menu back?

Code:

May 9, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu on one of my old notebooks (Acer Aspire 5516) for the past two years. My problem started when I tried to upgrade to 11.04 64 bit. I tried doing a fresh install and seeing if that helped, but it didn't. I had to downgrade back to 10.10. Does anyone know if 11.04 works at all on the Acer Aspire 5516 or a similar model? Even at 32 bit?

Yum 'pre-upgrade' added new kernel to menu.lst, but I don't boot from that GRUB; I boot from GRUB on another partition. The new kernel is ready to install, but the GRUB that I boot with ain't linking' to the pre-loaded kernel.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade Option Doesn't Appear In Boot Menu

Jul 2, 2009

I have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.

Ubuntu :: Natty Global Menu Does Not Follow Theme In Virtualbox?

May 14, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal on Virtualbox 4.0.6 (host OS is Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick) and for some reason the Global Menu does not follow the theme selected in appearances. By this I mean that no matter what theme I select the Global Menu resembles something like a Windows 95 theme, I presume a default basic theme. This also applies to the 'Home Folder' icon in the launcher and the corresponding icons in the home folder itself.

Has anyone else come across this and does anyone know how to correct it? I have also posted on the Virtualbox forums, but judging by the number of people logged on at the time I fancy my chances here better.

And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.
