Ubuntu Installation :: Using UNetbootin To Install Netbook Remix (Lucid) On Toshiba NB205?

Apr 30, 2010

I have tried using UNetbootin to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Toshiba NB205 and am having no luck. Both it and Kubuntu NR will boot from live USB and seemingly install successfully, but when I select the Ubuntu option, it hangs and drops me down to BusyBox with initramfs.

When UNR was distributed as a .img file, I could use Canonical's USB image .exe to prepare the USB drive and it always worked like a charm, but now UNetbootin fails me all too often. I don't really have access to another Ubuntu box to run usb-creator with, so has anyone had any success with any other install method? I am dual booting with Windows 7.

OpenSUSE Install :: E2fsck -b 8193 <device> Error After Win 7 Installation

Jul 30, 2010

I had left a small windows partition for some programs like MS Office, (I'd failed to install it with wine :-( ) so I was dual booting OpenSUSE 11.3 & Vista. When I decided to replace Vista with Win 7, the grub was missing, I formated the Vista partition, then tried to boot into SUSE before installing win 7. there was some command line, that i tried the instructions I had found on the forums so I typed

grub
find /boot/grub/menu.lst
and I got (hd0,1) so I
root (hd0,1)

[code]....

I got an error about missing (hd0,1), when I pressed enter I got a menu not the one I was used to. When I chose to boot OpenSUSE 11.2 or the failsafe I got error 17 "cannot mount partition" so found a bit of assistance from the following page: How to fix GRUB after Windows breaks it, and how to edit the GRUB menu - Super User when I press "e" and change root (hd0,1) to (hd0,2) then boot by pressing b, I get the usual SUSE boot screen, then the bootup process stops with some text displayed on the screen. there was a lot of text but the following is what I jotted down: the superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2.

superblock corrupt e2fsck with an alternative superblock
e2fsck -b 8193
fsck failed. Mounting root device read-only

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Causes: Mount: Mounting None On /dev Failed: No Such Device

Jun 17, 2010

I posted a similar problem sometime last week...but a little has changed(mainly I can access my files now): I recently performed the auto upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 and upon restart of my machine I am presented with 3 screens. The first is a simple "GRUB loading". The second is "mount: mounting none on /dev failed: no such device". The third screen is a series of initializations, i.e. /dev/sda1:

clean, (number of files), (number of blocks)
*setting preliminary keymap...
and so on until it hits the line:
*checking battery status

at which point it will cease loading until i press the power button. The next thing that occurs is it kills all the processes it just initialized and shuts down the computer. I read that this is likely a problem from loading the wrong kernel and I can get into my files (using a boot 9.10 boot key). The problem is I don't know what files to change in order to get my system booting the right kernel.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unetbootin LiveCD Image Onto HDD?

Oct 27, 2010

My old HDD died. I have 10.10 installed on a usb stick. This is a full installation not a LiveCD. I downloaded the live CD and Unetbootin.

Can I use unetbootin to create a bootable 'LiveCD' onto a partition of my new hard drive?

Without a CD drive, I can't think of any other way to get an installation onto my new HDD

EDIT - got ubuntu installed but had to do it at work, so i am still curious as how one would proceed with only a USB (full installation) and a blank HDD with no access to any other computers.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub:Error:No Such Device?

Jan 29, 2010

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 with Ubuntu-desktop installed.I've been using kubuntu for sometime now but i dont know much technical things about it. I have two hard discs (160GB SATA and 80GB PATA).I have just installed Windows XP Professional and then reinstalled grub2 from a live CD. Both OS are on 80GB PATA drive. The Grub menu at boot time has "Windows XP Professional" entry in it. The problem is thatwhen i select that entry, i get an error saying:Quote:Grub:Error:No such device - "a string of letters and numbers"Press any key to continue...When i press any key, it goes back to the grub menu. Kubuntu and Ubuntu work fine. When i go to bios and change my hard disc boot order, grub is bypassed and Windows boots and works good. I dont know much technical things but i think maybe its the problem with Windows entry in grub. (something to do with lines map(hd0,hd1) and map(hd1,hd0) (But i'm nt sure. I just said wat i thought it might be)

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error After Upgrade To 10.10 - No Such Device

Nov 17, 2010

yesterday i upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. During installation i also upgraded grub to version 2. It said that there were two options that i could choose to boot and i choose both. Installation finished with out a hitch. When i attempted restart my laptop i got this message:

error: no such device: 12631218-8ac6-4505-b4cb-a66a1de1814f
grub rescue>

I tried the command help and received a message saying that the help command was not recognized. So i then gave Google a bit of a work out and have tried reinstalling grub and manually coping the grub files all to no avail. The problem i believe stems from how i have Ubuntu installed. I have Ubuntu installed like an application on windows 7 on a separate partition on my hard drive. Looking back on it i'm not to sure why i choose that route, but that is how it is installed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error: No Such Device, Grub Rescue

Mar 29, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu on a separate hard drive alongside Vista, and after restarting, my computer booted to a screen that said, "error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx (I don't remember exact number, if I need them I'll go back and write em down) grub rescue>"

After a bit of searching I found this thread: [URL].. I tried the first part twice which didn't change anything, so I tried the last part which was too fix the vista bootloader, which worked perfectly, and now I can get into at least one operating system. Would anyone please help me get a bootloader working so I can choose between Ubuntu and Vista? Also, is it worth mentioning that right before the computer shut down after installation, I had a huge list of I/O errors?

EDIT: After further searching I read that the I/O errors were commonly because of a faulty cd or it was spinning too fast. I think my problem with that was that it was spinning too fast, it was incredible loud and there was a huge amount of wind coming out of my computer XD. iirc I have to go to the BIOS to change disc speed?

EDIT2: I think all my problems stem from a faulty CD. I remember setting the burning speed too the highest setting when I burnt the live CD, I guess I thought faster was better.
