Server :: Error During Bootup: Mount: Special Device LABEL- San_data Does Not Exist

Dec 9, 2010

why I'd be receiving this error. I have created a partition and filesystem and put the label in fstab. Everytime I reboot the server it is unable to mount the filesystem. However I am able to mount it manually.

Ubuntu :: Mount: Special Device /dev/scd0 Does Not Exist

Sep 12, 2010

The CD-ROM on this computer, my ubuntu laptop, does not seem to be working properly. It works on and off. I burned a .iso image yesterday but today I can't get it to even read the CD in my drive. I just want to read the CD to see if it is the Ubuntu Live CD I burned a while ago or if it is the Vista Recovery CD.

TL;DR: CD-ROM isn't working properly. When I click on the drive this is the error.

Code:

mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist

P.S. I am trying to get Windows Office to install using Wine because I am tired of windows. I know that open office is great. but I have to have excel 2007 and word 2007 for school.

Software :: Mounting Logical Partition - Special Device Does Not Exist?

May 2, 2010

I have created a logical partition (/dev/sda5) and have formatted it with an ext3 filesystem and given it the label PHOTOS.

# mkfs.ext3 -L PHOTOS /dev/sda5

If I mount it to my /PHOTOS directory manually, it does so correctly. However, when I try to automount, it gives me this message:

# mount -a
mount: special device PHOTOS does not exist

I've entered this line in my fstab file:

PHOTOS/dev/sda5ext3defaults0 0

I'm just not sure what's happening; I've never had trouble mounting a filesystem before. Oh and it's a RHEL 5 installation.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Installed - No Such Device Error On Bootup

Sep 23, 2010

I decided to fully install Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer Using Entire Disk Space. Installation was completed without any problems so I followed the instructions, Rebooted and took the CD out of the mechanic. After rebooting, when the GRUB was loading, it said the following
Error: no such device: 235ea02c-16b5-4abf-af04-af6767b6848f

I tried rebooting several times, even with CD inside. All it did was it moved to choice of System (normal, safe mode, memory check etc...). When I chose Normal, it just refreshed and did not get me anywhere. The same goes for the safe mode. After a certain while I decided to replace it with 10.04. However, this one stopped at 79% saying sth like Retrieving Data *number* of *number*.

It lasted for too long so I rebooted again, now with 9.10 CD inside again. I installed 9.10 hoping that this time it would work the way it should. However, the exact same thing happend. Installation went smoothly but GRUB booting had that error. Now there is Ubuntu 9.10 on my HDD which would not start so I'm writing this using the "10.04 Tryout".

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Label USB Stick So It Will Mount At Unique Points?

I have a few generic USB sticks lying around, and a few more SD/microSD chips that I use with openSUSE. Is there any way to label/ID them so they mount at unique points in /media, so I don't blast one accidentally? In mkfs.vfat there is a "-n volume-name" that looks promising, but I can't find a way to set that after the mkfs.

General :: Device / Special File Clairification Requested

Oct 1, 2010

Device/Special file Clairification Requested.I'm reading a short article on Device/special files because it is related to VFS. This article has this paragraph that has to many pronouns in it to get an understanding of. URL..."In short, a device file (also called as a special file) is an interface for a device driver that appears in a file system as if it were an ordinary file. This allows software to interact with the device driver using standard input/output system calls, which simplifies many tasks."

What does a Device file have to do with the Application and the Driver communicating? Wouldn't the order of data transfer be , Application to driver and then to Device file?

Ubuntu Installation :: Display Error Notification 'Could Not Apply The Stored Configuration For Monitors X Server Does Not Support Size Requested' On Bootup

May 8, 2010

Since upgrading to Lucid, I am getting the following dialog warning on login: 'Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors X Server does not support size requested' Im using the current proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver with dual heads. My display is fine, but the warning every time I login is annoying. After googling around I found this thread: [URL]. I tried going to Monitor Preferences as suggested. My resolution as displayed in the default tool is set to 3840 x 1200, which I suspect is the issue forcing the dialog, but I cant change the resolution, refresh rate or rotation from the Monitor Preference dialog box. dino99's response (in the referenced post) about xorg.conf not being needed anymore seems relevant. How can I resolve this issue and get rid of this annoying warning? Is there a configuration that I can update with a supported resolution to placate lucid?

Server :: Mount Raid Device To Recover Data?

Aug 20, 2009

In a nutshell, our RAID 1 array was rendered broken and we were advised that core lib files were missing and the OS needed to be reloaded... a quote from our server host:"The OS is not healthy. This server will need a reinstall.
Libs are missing." This was after having replaced what we though was a faulty /dev/sdb. So they reloaded the OS (Debian 5.0.2 x86_64) on 2 FRESH drives, and installed the old /dev/sda as /dev/sdc once the reload was completed. Here's the output of /etc/fstab on the fresh install so we know what we're working with:

Code:

debian:/BAK# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

[code]....

The one problem I see myself running into is /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 are currently in use by the new system, so I cannot mount it there. I should also note, reloading the OS is a viable option if needed as we haven't started configuring the server yet. So if we need to reinstall the OS and assign the NEW RAID arrays to something other than /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 then we can do that.
