Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.10 To 10.04 Leaving All User Files Intact?

Jun 24, 2010

I want to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 leaving all my user files intact.

Instructions say that this is an option presented by the update manager, but on my computer it is not.

Do I have a configuration problem?

Can I do this from the command line?

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade - Will Settings Remain Intact

May 10, 2011

I was going to pull the trigger and do the "natty" upgrade. Before I do I had a few questions. Basically, I changed a few config settings on my ubuntu 10.10 load. I made it so I can connect to it remotely via ssh and open a secure desktop session. I changed some port settings so it doesn't use the traditional ssh 22 port and traditional xrdp port was change also. So, I'm wondering if my "tweaks" will remain intact after the update or if I'll have to go back in and reconfigure those settings? I'm running 10.10 on my PIII 600 with an old ATI Radeon 64 graphics card. I'm quite happy with 10.10 but if I can upgrade to "natty" will little problems I'd like to. Also, my default GUI is xfce. Also, here's my system as shown by lspci:

Ubuntu Installation :: "dependency - Leaving Unconfigured" After Upgrade To 10.04

Nov 20, 2010

After running 9.04 for a year, I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and then to 10.04 using Update Manager. My Dell computer crashed several times during the upgrade to 10.04. I restarted each time from a recovery version of 10.04, and eventually the upgrade was completed. As far as I can tell after a few days, everything I normally use seems to be working. However, when I add a package with Synaptic I get the error message below. Is the message significant? Do I need to address each error?

Fedora :: Acrobat Reader Leaving Files In /tmp?

Oct 20, 2010

I've noticed in the last few weeks that whenever I open a PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Reader I get several files with names like 4cbe92d509fde in my /tmp directory. This happens for all PDFs, whether I download them or create them myself. Has anyone else seen this happen? It's not a big deal, since I can just rm those files. I'm just curious about how this happens, and if there's a way to stop it. I'm using Acrobat Reader 9.3.2 in F13 (32-bit).

General :: How To Skip User Created Files During RPM Upgrade

Sep 4, 2009

I am trying to create an RPM package. However when the RPM package installs, it need to skip some files that might have been created by the user after the last installation and use of the program. Is there a way to build RPM package that just skips the user created content in the installation dir.

For example:
lets say my RPM package creates the following dir and creates files required by my application, say .app files.
/ppm/config/

However the user may also create a few .xml files in the same dir. How will I package my program that will not delete the .xml files from the above dir and will just create the application files (.app files).

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Hangs On User Selection After Upgrade

May 16, 2010

I recently went the upgrade route and something went wrong either with the download or the installation or 10.04 and my hardware are having issues. I am looking for some advice for either fixing what is wrong or getting some additional data backed up to USB before wiping the partition and starting new.

My computer is dual-boot using Grub2, the other OS being Windows Vista. I can get to Windows Vista fine via GRUB. When I select Ubuntu (says kernel 2.6.31-21) though I don't get very far.

At this point I can get 10.04 all the way to the user selection screen, where it immediately freezes, forcing a hard reset. I can boot into recovery mode, but if I select failsafeX it freezes at the first screen that comes up--the notice you are running in low res graphics mode.

When I did the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 I used the update tool in Ubuntu. However I also now have a 10.04 install CD.

My graphics cards are twin NVidia 9600s in SLI. I would say it is a graphics card problem since the first graphical screen that comes up both in regular boot (the login screen) and failsafeX (the notice screen) I get a hard lock. However booting off the CD it loads the desktop just fine!

I would just wipe clean however my last data backup was partial and there is some stuff I would like to go back in and get. However neither method I have used to try and go back in to get what I need has succeeded. I have a 320G USB drive I use for backing up certain data. If I boot using the CD, it gives me an error message about the isntaller then goes to desktop (which works fine, even though I can't get past the login screen when booting 10.04 from the hard drive) I can then plug in the USB drive fine and it shows up, but some of the files on the Ubuntu installation don't give me permission to copy them. There is an 'X' on the icon and I don't know whether there is a way to get me authenticated in order to copy them from the CD desktop.

Alternatively, I can get to a root prompt if I boot into recovery mode (not the CD, just recovery mode from GRUB). I assume I can move them from there and that the permissions issue won't be a problem but when I plug in the USB drive I don't get any errors but I am not seeing it show up in /media. Also if I put a DVD-RW (all I have on hand) into my DVD-RW drive maybe I could back the data up to that, but I'm not familiar with how to do that from the command line.

If I could get to a point where I could verify that I have this extra bit of data backed up then I wouldn't have any problem wiping the partition and starting over.

Ubuntu Installation :: Files Owned By User 1000 - No Access

May 25, 2010

Running 9.10 now, I'd like to do a clean install of 10.04 on my dual-boot (with XP) Compaq notebook. As a test, I burned an ISO image onto a 1-GB stick and booted to 10.04 from it. It works just fine, except that the directories in the Documents folder on my hard drive are owned by "user 1000", and "he" grants me access to only about half of them.

Is this problem likely to persist if I actually install 10.04 rather than just running it from the stick? If so, what can I do about it? Second question: am I correct in understanding that if I still need to access my Ubuntu partition from XP, I'd better stick with ext3 for this install rather than going to ext4?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 To 10.4 Upgrade - Get Far Enough To Write Any Files Though

Oct 19, 2010

I recently attempted to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4 (on my way to 10.10). I can no longer boot, it hangs immediately, I don't even see any messages from Grub. My system is a virtual machine (Sun Vbox) on a Dell laptop (host OS is XP). Version 9.10 ran without any trouble and the upgrade process seemed to go without error.

When the system restarted is when the trouble started. I made a snapshot of the 9.10 image before the upgrade so I can easily get back, but sometimes things like this are great learning experiences so I would like to debug this. Below is the results of the Boot Info Script. When booting the 10.4 version never requests a IP address from my DHCP server so it really appears to be hung (as opposed to just being a display problem). if there are any useful logfiles I should be checking. From what I can tell it doesn't appear to get far enough to write any files though. One curiosity is the boot/grub/core.img is much smaller now than a very similar 9.10 VM on another host.

(Yes, I checked /dev/null first). My first stop was to edit > preferences > applications to see if the extension definitions got borked during the upgrade. Everything seemed normal except for the fact that I couldn't see an entry for .hqx files and no apparent method for manually adding it to the list. I went to another site that I administer and successfully download a .pdf file

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Missing Files After Upgrade?

Jan 28, 2011

Last night I attempted to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64) machine. After reboot (it installed a new kernel), the grub menu only had the memtest. Booted into a livecd and it seems that I was missing most of the files in /etc/grub.d/. Reinstalled grub-common and grub-pc didn't seem to restore the files. I ended up having to download the dpkg, expand it and copy the files manually so I could get the box generate grub.conf and boot up. I think grub may have been broken before the upgrade but exhibited the problem when it upgraded the kernel and reran upgrade-grub but I can't seem to figure out why reinstalling grub doesn't add the files back.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Gone Wrong May Have Lost Important Files

I have had Hardy Heron 8.04 since 2008. Few problems, but when the red arrow indicated updates I clicked on it and it was for an upgrade to 10.04.I decided to upgrade but it didn't go well.I ended up with a black screen and white letters. I didn't know what to do.I don't know many commands.I posted here but got no response.I had no access to the Internet.I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04 from the CD.At one point it asked me about a 10GB partition.I didn't really understand it at that point but clicked ok.When I got the computer running again I noticed that it was a new partition with 7 GB free space. What happened to all my precious other files?

I am panicking because I read a similar thread about a Windows/Ubuntu partition and the person was worried about losing all Windows files.I did back up the files on an external hard drive but not recently. Losing them would mean I had to make up a lot of work.
