Have used 10.04 for almost a year now, and the 'upgrade' now beckons.How can I ensure that my programs and Download files remain intact following the process? I already have 11.04 as an .iso on cd, but am unsure how to proceed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was going to pull the trigger and do the "natty" upgrade. Before I do I had a few questions. Basically, I changed a few config settings on my ubuntu 10.10 load. I made it so I can connect to it remotely via ssh and open a secure desktop session. I changed some port settings so it doesn't use the traditional ssh 22 port and traditional xrdp port was change also. So, I'm wondering if my "tweaks" will remain intact after the update or if I'll have to go back in and reconfigure those settings? I'm running 10.10 on my PIII 600 with an old ATI Radeon 64 graphics card. I'm quite happy with 10.10 but if I can upgrade to "natty" will little problems I'd like to. Also, my default GUI is xfce. Also, here's my system as shown by lspci:

If I want to upgrade to the next version, how to do it keeping my present set up of programs & settings intact (including Compiz), so that I need not install Individually all over again?
View 5 Replies View Related1) Any process (including boot, shutdown, download, open programs, etc) is freeze (don't have any progress) until I move the mouse or hit any button, so for install and use my ubuntu I have to keep moving my mouse and as you imagine is VERY TIRED.2) I get some general freeze on random times, neither the mouse, keyboard or process move, I notice that if I unplug power it unfreze, and I can work for some time.This 2 problems annoy me a lot, and I suspect is a problem related to my Netbook Model, I read about someone that has the same problem but no solution there.
This is what I did:I Try Ubuntu loading from my USB memory (1GB), run very good but with the 2 problems, but I thought it can be resolved installing.I installed along side with W7, couldn't boot Ubuntu, so I configured GRUB2 and it could enter now, but if I don't press **** after selecting Ubuntu it give me the BusyBox, and then the same 2 problems.I get rid of my W7 and did a Full Install on my 160GB HDD, hoping it can work fine, but no.I install all updates and no effect on that.
I want to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 leaving all my user files intact.
Instructions say that this is an option presented by the update manager, but on my computer it is not.
Do I have a configuration problem?
Can I do this from the command line?
I couldn't find an answer myself. So, the problem is that every single bittorrent program I tried downloads files I checked to ignore so I know this is not a program related issue. For example, there are 2 pictures in a torrent, I select only one but in the end I have both downloaded.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIm in a live CD session right now and copying the main ubuntu partition to a new partition. basically im doing this to install windows and have a separate partition for STUFFs like videos etc. since i cant have more than 4 primary partitions. win7 takes up 2 partitions and ubuntu takes 1 and an extended which will have swap and "STUFFs". i know how to reinstall the grub but i dont know the other stuffs.

I am running F11 and I am using cable broadband and a Linksys router.I have been able to get ssh working with OpenSSH while I am at home but I don't really need or want to ssh remotely, I would rather setup what I think is called an ftp. I just want to be able to up and download files to my Linux machine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Xubuntu on an old Pentium3. This computer only takes keyboard with the this type of connector: link. When I type the name using this keyboard nothing happens. The mouse (connected through USB) works fine however. Does Xubuntu (or other Ubuntu) based computers have a known issue with this type of keyboards? I am sure the keyboard works fine and infact the problem happened when using two different keyboards.

I tried to figure out the problem... the same problem occurs with both evince and okular. However it does not occur when opening the same file under root (tested with xpdf), so it seems to be some permission problem. I tried searching on the error message but couldn't find a working solution.
I'm currently running ubuntu on my netbook, and vista on my desktop. Earlier i had an ubuntu installation alongside my vista, this has resaulted in my desktop making a countdown at booting. After the countdown it boots up vista. So i'm aware that there still are som leftovers from my earlier umuntu adventures.... here is my objective: I want to keep my vista installation intact, BUT i need to clear all earlier grub and ubuntu installations...and finally I want to install a fresh ubuntu 10.04.

will launch gedit and return to the terminal prompt (so no need to open up another terminal).

View 5 Replies View RelatedOk. I have a media server running debian amd64. when I installed it I made separate partitions for root (/) home (/home) var (/var) and swap.
I'm adding some new hardware (mobo and ram) and want to reinstall debian. I would like to keep my home and var partitions intact and just reinstall everything in root (/) partition.
I'm unsure of how to do this during the installation. Do i need to format? how do I tell it to use the /var and /home partitions?
Just completed downloading kubuntu-9.10-dvd-amd64.iso and found that a few files were corrupted. Would rather not download again since I have a slow connection and this download took almost 80 hours!!
Tried torrent---doesn't allow downloading files in the iso.
The corrupt files are listed at the end. Can some kind soul provide a link to these files?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've some problems upgrading to version 10 from version 8. My workstation is certified by RedHat. It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. It has been installed successfully! However; I've read about advantages for workstation on version 10. Thus, I've downloaded Fedora ISO ver.10 and I've tried to install it in my WS. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':
# yum -y update
# yum install preupgrade
# preupgrade
It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!... I've tried to install beta version 11 but after one hour I get a error messages due at a bug
I updated from karmic to lucid server edition and now firefox wants to download some php files. index.php which is in the same directory is apparently correctly parsed.
Google chrome tells me that the site may be temporarily down and Opera informs me that the connection has been closed by the remote server.
Under karmic I had a standard lamp server installed and everything worked fine.
This is the first time I post in a forum and I hope this is fine here.
I just moved the scripts from the server to a local machine which I updated a couple of weeks ago to lucid.
This may be impossibly easy or easily impossible, but I'm looking for a step by step guide to download an entire program onto a jump drive, then to drop that program onto another computer.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a USB which I want to use for a 'live' debian OS. I have debian 7.7 on hard disk and will be using Unetbootin to transfer the .iso file onto the USB.
However, when I go the debian archive there are so many iso files for the particular debian pkg [URL] .... There's iso, iso.contents, iso.log, iso.packages and iso.zsync. Do I download all of these iso files?
I'll be doing a Code: Select allsha256sums <iso-filename> to make sure the downloads aren't corrupted. But when I use Unetbootin and get it to write the main .iso file onto USB, do I then repeat this process with all the other iso files for the OS?
I am still having trouble installing Debian 6.0.1a (Squeeze) from either CD #1 (KDE version) or netinst version. I tried for a few months to install Squeeze with KDE desktop; now I am trying to build a server, which seems easier (no X.org and KDE problems to worry about.)
Part of the problem common to all my failed attempts (about a dozen!) seems to be that the installer tries to get packages or updates/upgrades from repos but for some reason fails.
I have a commercial all-in-one dslmodem/router/firewall which has very, very limited monitoring capabalities, just enough to show that the PC in question contacted the expected repos (I tried several in different regions) and also shows that no DNS requests failed during that time frame. I did try decreasing the security of the commercial firewall, but that seems to make no difference. I did try to save the install logs, but they didn't fit on a floppy. Any idea what could be going wrong?
