I performed an upgrade via the Update Manager from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS and it seemed to go flawlessly. However, now I cannot seem to be able to remove the old Kernel from 9.10 in the package manager. It does not even show 2.6.32-21 as installed but it still shows the old Kernel in Grub. I did a sudo update-grub but it was to no avail.
View 1 RepliesI recently updated the kernel to the newest version(2.6.32-23-generic) using the update manager and now I am unable to boot in to my Lucid installation.
My setup is LVM on top of a RAID 0 array. My computer had been running in this configuration since Lucid was released.
The Error Code I get on Boot is to the effect of: /dev/mapper/ubuntu-os is not available.. and then I get kicked in to Busy Box.
Once in Busy Box if I try to use mdadm to mount the RAID array I get this error:
If I boot in to the live CD I can mount all of the partitions and LVM volumes, so it does not appear to be a failed drive or volume.
I have looked in the mdadm.conf, lvm config and grub config files and searched the "Google" for an answer with no-avail...
Ultimately I would like to find a solution which doesn't involve a re-installation.
Over the past few days I have been trying to install an older kernel (kernel 2.6.28.1) on ubuntu 9.10 64-bit WUBI installation. I compiled, installed, and updated my grub for the kernel. When I reboot, the grub menu correctly gives me the option of booting into the older kernel but when I do so I receive the following error message:
error: you need to load the linux kernel first.
I am at a complete loss on how to fix this. I even downgraded grub but I still get the same error.
I had a total freeze during a kernel upgrade, and reinstalled my system(kubuntu karmic) but still cannot boot.

I know that error 15 means "file not found", but not how to figure out which file it is or how to point correctly to it.
I have tried to install the system on partitions on two separate disks, with the same end result. on the original disk I had some trouble getting through grub install, but on the other disk there were no indications of trouble during setup. can this a problem with the MBR on the first drive?
I have one drive connected by PATA, the rest by SATA, will SATA1 be (hd0)[grub] and /dev/sda [linux], is it the PATA drive, or some other means to determine this without examining the make and model of each drive?
If i use yum update option it upgrades to latest kernel but i only want to upgrade to kernel-2.6.31.6.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system.It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade.After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?

I couldn't get 10.10 to boot (live or after install). I was able to install and boot 9.10 normally. Then I ran upgrade to 10.10 and I started getting the same problem trying to boot as with 10.10 disk. I found I could boot with 2.6.32 left from 9.10 but it will not boot 9.6.35 kernels. On a normal restart when automatically trying to boot the latest 9.6.35, I get this message before switching to an unresponsive black screen with no further hard drive activity:

I have been searching for a solution and so far have not found anything that worked. I'm a pretty basic user so I'm not sure what is going on.
After upgrading Maverick (perfect!) to Natty, I was unable to boot into anything. (kernel 2.6.38). However, through much PITA, I was able to boot into an older kernel. (2.6.35). I completely removed 2.6.38, rebooted, reinstalled it and ran update-grub. However, 2.6.38 is no longer available no matter how many times I run update-grub, and the only option left is 2.6.35. In my humble opinion, the Natty upgrade experience is rubbish. (blank screen, total PC hangs, boots into a blank screen with only a blinking cursor, NVIDIA official driver not working, bootable only into older kernels etc.)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 on an AMD64 dual core platform with all the most recent upgrades installed. After the most recent Kernel upgrade version 2.6.31.20 the computer failed to boot correctly. Extremely slow getting to the desktop and a general failure to preload any programs that I load on boot. I had to uninstall and revert back to the previous Linux headers which solved the problem. If it makes any difference I have the machine setup as an apache2 server along with my standard desktop environment.

I wonder if others have upgraded their Lucid kernel using the deb [URL]..repository. I have been using the repository for some time now without any apparent problems, and have gone from 2.6.36-1, through 2.6.37-10, and am now on 2.6.37-12.
All of these seem to work with no problems at all, but I am just wondering if other users can also report success, or if there are any trip-ups that might occur. I still keep updating the "standard" kernel from the main repos, ie 2.6.32-27, so I have that as a backup, but I'm just very curious about other people's findings.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo T60 and am having problems waking up from sleep every time I update the kernel.
I just got the upgrade from 2.6.35.25 to 2.6.35.27.
The problem I see now is that I get this message when coming back from sleep (I coped it down since after the message I couldn't do anything else):

I read recently about security flaws in the ubuntu kernel, and when I checked my kernel, it is 2.6.32-29-generic. I looked in synaptic, and I have the linux-generic meta-package - which should ensure upgrade to the latest kernel, and yet this is not being updated when I run update manager. There is a linux-image-2.6.35-25-generic, but the advice is not to install this directly (to avoid breaking dependencies, etc.), but to install the meta-package instead. Yet, the meta-package doesn't seem to be doing what is should do.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt seems that i am stuck using the 2.6.38-9 kernel, since no matter what i try, i can't update. I have had this problem since 2.6.38-10, but figured that the problem probably would solve itself after the next kernel update, sadly that was not the case.
I have had some worrying error-massages from dpkg about broken packages, which i believe might be the source of this problem, as it reported that the package "linux-image-generic" was broken. I removed the postinstall script from /var/lib/dpkg/info and updated both dpkg and aptitude.
I am not getting any more error messages, and if i look in the synaptic package manager, i can see that kernel 2.6.38-11 is indeed installed, yet i can't select it at bootup, even though i have tried to manually update grub.
I'm running Hardy 8.04 LTS 64bit. The Update Manager updated the kernel and then asked if I wanted to use the local version of the grub menu. The boot menu was getting so long I edited it to shorten it. Other options were also offered, like the builder's version, but I chose the local version and since then the new kernel doesn't show up in the boot menu. Sudo update-grub doesn't restore it to the menu.
How do I undo the local version of the boot menu so I can see the newest kernel?
So I have been using Ubuntu for the past couple of months using Wubi, mainly because my parent's are afraid that I'll screw something up on the computer if I partition the hard drive and stuff like that. And Today I installed the latest updates for 9.10, asked me to restart the computer, and now whenever I try to boot using the latest kernel GRUB keeps telling me to "Load kernel first". The funny thing is that I can boot with the older kernel fine, But I would really like to get the lates updates, which I can't using the older kernel.

Before installing, I had a 190gb partition for windows 7 and 45gb of unallocated space. Through Wubi, I used the advanced partition editor to make a 6gb swap partition and a 22gb root partition for Ubuntu. All went well, but when I rebooted, I was unable to choose linux.
I installed Ubuntu by using Unetbootin to put the Ubuntu ISO on my USB drive. After installing, I disconnected the USB drive, and I was unable to choose the linux kernel option on the GRUB menu. When I do, my system just restarts and presents me with the GRUB menu again. However, windows 7 boots up perfectly.
I'm assuming that GRUB is somehow trying to boot the linux kernel from the USB. How do I change it to boot from the installation I made on my harddrive?
I did the kernel update via Update Manager today. Unfortunately , after this , disaster happened whereby sh.grub> prompt appeared on screen.
I got no idea how to rescue or repair the grub. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 in my E: under Windows 7 partition and labeled as "ubuntu". It has dual boot capability.
After having patched the kernel with an ABI-patch I cannot find it in the grub2-Menu OS: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in /boot I can see: the original and the new config-file

After installation of Ubuntu 10.10, grub loads and has the right menu list. However, Ubuntu doesn't load and I get an error message of :Gave up waiting for root device. (with a list of common problems)There is also:ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/1584598e-b8e5..... does not exist.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOKI am loading 9.10 (K or U, makes no difference). This installs 2-6-31.14. Eventually I am unable to dissuade APT from upgrading to Grub 1.97 beta4. One of two things can happen.
1) I am upgraded to a later kernel at the same time (currently 2-6-31.1. This singularly fails to work, in that I end up with no working kernel at all and I can only run memtest (or Windows 7, which is about as much use): good for the soul no doubt, but frustrating. "Solution": tar up the whole of /boot beforehand and then reinstate it afterwards. I am back to square 1, but at least a working square 1.
2) I persuade APT not to upgrade the kernel.I then get 14 (and 14 recovery) in my grub.cfg, but boot fails dramatically, and it becomes apparent that it has forgotten about /dev/sda, my hard disk.Further investigation shows that I have a new initrd.img in /boot, which doesn't work properly; reinstate the backup version, and all is well.What is going on? Is it just me? How come there aren't crowds of protesting peasants with pitchforks outside Canonical Towers?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI keep finding the same fixes on the web and they are not working. What I have/what I did: I have a dual boot PC. HD0 was XP. HD1 Kubuntu 10.04. I upgraded XP to Win 7. This jacked my Grub up, now all I can load is Win 7. I don't see the Grub menu anymore. I've been trying to reinstall Grub using varoius web pages like: [URL]
They seem to all be telling me the same thing but not working. I boot into a liveCD. I have to sudo apt-get install grub then I can do sudo grub. I follow the instructions:
sudo grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition".
Now if I'm understanding this right the reason for that is. HD0,0 is my first HD first partition (which is Win 7), and grub doesn't like windows. I tried swapping it out so it reads:
sudo grub
> root (hd1,0)
> setup (hd1)
I then quit and reboot. Win 7 loads. I don't see Grub.I am using 2 separate hard drives?
After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, windows XP boot option is missing from the boot loader window. The laptop has two ntfs partitions - one for windows recovery and the other one for XP. The recovery option is available in the boot loader. But XP is missing. I tried several suggestions from different forums but to no vail. Can somebody help ? The output of boot_info-script follows:

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and did an upgrade yesterday via the Update Manager. Just installed all proposed upgrades. After rebooting, my newest kernel throws an error 16: inconsistent filesystem structure. When I select my previous kernel from the GRUB, no problems. How do I debug this error? Or better yet, how do I fix it?
