After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, windows XP boot option is missing from the boot loader window. The laptop has two ntfs partitions - one for windows recovery and the other one for XP. The recovery option is available in the boot loader. But XP is missing. I tried several suggestions from different forums but to no vail. Can somebody help ? The output of boot_info-script follows:

After a hard drive failure I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in the secondary drive. The intention was to have keep the machine functional until I could reinstall XP and have a dual boot. I replaced the failing drive and reinstalled XP.
The main reason for keeping windows is for using Itunes and a ton of music on the Ipod. I can get into the Ubuntu using Super Grub2 and did try repairing Grub 2 with rescutux. I can of course use the super grub2 disk to boot into Ubuntu but would like to repair Grub2 so I have the choice at boot without the disk.

I downloaded the release version of 11.04 desktop 32bit today and ran into a problem with the upgrade. Not sure if I missed a step or not, but when I booted the CD to do an Install of 11.04 desktop 32bit over 10.10 desktop 32bit I expected to see the upgrade option similar to what is in this link (red arrow pointing to it):[URL]... On my install screen all the other options were there except the upgrade.
Since I was on a schedule for this particular computer I am doing the Update Manager Network upgrade instead but I have 3 other computers to do as well. Any ideas on what I might have missed? Should I have booted to Live version first instead of Install then look for an upgrade option somewhere? I read something that alluded to that on a website.
I was defraging windows xp and the power want off now I can only boot into ubuntu from Grub.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Hardy 8.04 LTS 64bit. The Update Manager updated the kernel and then asked if I wanted to use the local version of the grub menu. The boot menu was getting so long I edited it to shorten it. Other options were also offered, like the builder's version, but I chose the local version and since then the new kernel doesn't show up in the boot menu. Sudo update-grub doesn't restore it to the menu.
How do I undo the local version of the boot menu so I can see the newest kernel?
I had a dual boot system(WinXP and Ubuntu). But something happened and I was not able to boot into my Ubuntu partition. It gave GRUB missing error. I tried reformatting the dedicated 40 GB ubuntu partition to NTFS and again try to reinstall ubuntu. But now, when I install ubuntu through boot time install, it shows that my whole hard disk is empty( but I have windows XP on whole hdd at the moment) and do not give any other option but to use whole hdd.
Alternatively when I try to install it inside windows, then after rebooting it shows, no root file system defined error and neither gives any option to do so also ( this method worked earlier o my PC). At the moment, It still shows ubuntu and windowsXP at OS choice menu at boot time but when booting in ubuntu, it shows GRUB missing. (I don't have any ubuntu installation on my hard disk at the moment).
Had v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install.
Got the bug to upgrade to v10.
Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.
At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.

Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.
Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.

Following the directions I was able to fix that problem.Now when Ubunutu 10.10 loads up it says failed to find /home wait or press S/M to skip or fix.I went ahead and hit M... I'm not sure how to fix the /home problem. I know /home is on it's own partition, but I'm not sure how to fix it
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have installed windows 7 back to its former state in after foolishly messing around with some installation options in an Ubuntu install (this caused windows to disappear, and me to repair it). In *repairing* windows, I overwrote my grub file and the boot options for Ubuntu, so that it looks something like this:
Disk 1: Primary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Free Space ( this is where I have Ubuntu installed)
How can I repair my grub file so that I can boot into my Ubuntu installation?
I've just upgraded to the newest distro (and was amazed how smooth it went) via the update manager, but it seems that I've lost firefox (and my bookmarks :/ ) in the process. Is there any chance that I get my bookmarks back?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis evening I went through the upgrade process to 10.04. The entire process went well until reboot time. At that point fsck was run and stopped after checking the first physical hard drive. After some time I skipped (s). When I tried to log in, warning messages informed me that Nautilus could not access it's folders in our home folder. ls /home/ brings up nothing, nada zilch. Some poking around confirms that the drive is there but Ubuntu seems unaware of it.
The configuration:
Physical hd #1 is: sda a 40Gb hard drive with windows and Ubuntu / and swap.
Physical hd #2 is: sdb a 120Gb hard drive with our /home partitions.
Seems Ubuntu is simply not detecting the drive?
Last night I attempted to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64) machine. After reboot (it installed a new kernel), the grub menu only had the memtest. Booted into a livecd and it seems that I was missing most of the files in /etc/grub.d/. Reinstalled grub-common and grub-pc didn't seem to restore the files. I ended up having to download the dpkg, expand it and copy the files manually so I could get the box generate grub.conf and boot up. I think grub may have been broken before the upgrade but exhibited the problem when it upgraded the kernel and reran upgrade-grub but I can't seem to figure out why reinstalling grub doesn't add the files back.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.
The update package popped up with some security updates. I downloaded all of them and then hit the restart button. Now all I see after the winboot load is the grub 'dos' screen. I can get to grub rescue but thats it. I was wondering if there is a way to download the missing files from somewhere and place them in the grub folder as I am dual booting with XP.
I have installed Ubuntu onto a seperate partition as well.
Windows 7 wont start from the GRUB menu. After selecting the windows 7 entry I added to my '/boot/grub/menu.lst' i get an error saying BOOTMGR is missing. Both windows 7 and fedora 13 were freshly installed just yesterday. Win 7 first on one HD, fedora on another.

Windows is installed on my 200 GByte HD, sdc1 - and since Fedora is booting from sda1 and the menu.lst says root (hd0, 0) the windows entry should look like root(hd2,0), no? I tried a couple of different variations of my menu.lst, but i always got this BOOTMGR error. I read that mapping is not needed since vista, is this true? i can only enter the GRUB menu after hitting escape on start up, is there any way how i can have it starting the menu automatically?
just recently upgraded to 10.04. After the upgrade I noticed that certain Administration menu items are msising. I can't find the "Hardware Drivers" tool. Is there a way to reinstall to put the complete files and correct the menu items, etc.?

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem

The problem after couple installations (10.10 --> 10.04 --> 10.10 --> 10.04-3) is that system goes to "busybox" after complaining about missing root device. I already have come to conclusion that this problem could be solved by telling the system that the root device is at sda1. However, I'm not able to start grub (by pressing "ESC") at boot before problems start. I'm able to start live-cd and I tried to install "over" the old one (same partitions without format, same username). No luck.
And in the busybox /proc/modules is empty for example. And the grub has worked with previous installations.
I just netinstalled Squeeze to a netbook with Windows7. The installation went well without any problem. Linux is also working OK. When I boot now, grub does not show Windows7. I took default settings during installation. I mean I did not do anything special. What should i do to fix it? Should I run osprober and grub-update?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP G70 laptop and did an upgrade using upgrade manager to Ubuntu 10.04.
Since I haven't been able to get wifi connection or wired working. The Network Manager applet is missing from the notification area and if I try to run nm-applet manually it says it is already running. I tried killing the process and then running it manually in the terminal and although the process appears to be running it is missing from the panel.
Booting into the live cd has the applet working fine so something in the upgrade process must have failed.
I tried changing the theme to see if it displays in other themes but had no luck.
I also tried to log into kde but kde seems to be broken. When I log into it after the splash screen all I get is a black screen with only my mouse pointer.
Had Ubuntu 9.01 in Windows 7 as a Dual Booty - no problems.
When upgrade to 10.04 attempted the following errors occur:-
1. Missing Resources warning - " The Networkmanager Applet could not find some required resources. It cannot continue."
When I click OK wireless connection is totally lost with no means of reconnecting.
2. Download progresses but freezes at the download of "Preparing memtest86+"
I'm having a very strange error after upgrading to (K)Ubuntu 10.04.. basically Java Applets don't work in any browser (tried with Firefox, Chrome and Opera). The applet loads (plugin and JVM detected by all browsers) but it is grayed out. After trying all possible solutions I could think of (including installing alternatives jvm) I tried to run the browser as superuser: the applet is then working correctly. So somehow it seems to be a user right problem, but I'm not sure where this is coming from, both java (sun-6) and the browsers were installed and working ok in 9.10. I had ubu 904 and vista installed on an 80gb drive, i had a spare 80gb drive also. I setup a raid0 config in my bios, then installed ubu9.10 onto it. All was fine until the very end, and then it said grub failed to install.
So i rebooted, and im left with a blinking cursor. How do i install grub? Ive installed ubu a few times now and never had an issue so now im lost.
I am a brand new Ubuntu user that just tried to install on an old PC using the 10.10 desktop edition.During installation, I hit an error that the bootloader could not install, and after reading about it on the forums, opted to attempt to install it manually after. I have followed the tutorial located here,[URL].. on reinstalling GRUB2 from the liveCD, which I assume means to boot with the installation CD and select try Ubuntu (given the only other option is install, which I have tried twice) everything up to step 5 in that tutorial seems to run successfully, and I am given a message it is installed, but then when I reboot the system it does not open the GRUB2 menu, rather the CLI interface, which suggests there is no grub.cfg
So I am unable to refresh at the GRUB menu because that command is not recognized by the CLI (and it may not help if I am missing files, so I might have screwed up reinstalling them in step 5, or maybe the "Try Ubuntu" terminal doesn't alter the computer like I thought?)
I installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system.It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade.After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. I installed lilo and it boots. How do I installed grub again. Do I just use synaptic manager to uninstall lilo and install grub?

I know grub2 does not work, giving me error: ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. I did install grub-legacy and it worked, but I had to re-install squeeze due to other problems. So, now I want to replace lilo with grub legacy.
OKI am loading 9.10 (K or U, makes no difference). This installs 2-6-31.14. Eventually I am unable to dissuade APT from upgrading to Grub 1.97 beta4. One of two things can happen.
1) I am upgraded to a later kernel at the same time (currently 2-6-31.1. This singularly fails to work, in that I end up with no working kernel at all and I can only run memtest (or Windows 7, which is about as much use): good for the soul no doubt, but frustrating. "Solution": tar up the whole of /boot beforehand and then reinstate it afterwards. I am back to square 1, but at least a working square 1.
2) I persuade APT not to upgrade the kernel.I then get 14 (and 14 recovery) in my grub.cfg, but boot fails dramatically, and it becomes apparent that it has forgotten about /dev/sda, my hard disk.Further investigation shows that I have a new initrd.img in /boot, which doesn't work properly; reinstate the backup version, and all is well.What is going on? Is it just me? How come there aren't crowds of protesting peasants with pitchforks outside Canonical Towers?
