i have recently installed karmic koala.i wanted to upgrade it through terminal,but it is always showing me error as unable to connect to archive.ubuntu.com with some numbers in bracket like (189. etc).synaptic and and my internet connection is working fine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to extract an RAR file which has my stuff on it from university, they use Windows Vista Ultimate so i thought i would be safe when saving my work to my flash drive. So i saved my work with the program winzip. when i got home i put in my flash drive and asked Kubuntu to extract only to find i don't have a RAR program to extract so i asked to install one via the Kpackage Manager and everything seemed fine so i asked it to extract again and said cannot extract unknown file. so i went through the terminal to install again and to make sure they were no bits of the install missing and i got this.

Is there any other way of extracting my work as i need to get my essay open and finnish it before monday. Also why is it saying that the package is missing? and what is the other source? Is there a way to decrypt this RAR file that vista has made? Also one more thing once ive managed to decrypt and extract my work what is the reccomended format to between vista and kubuntu so i wont get anymore issues?
I'd like to ask about archive mounter feature, can I mount zip file with read write mode? can gvfsd-archive do that?, or I must use fuse-zip to mount it? If I must use fuse-zip, how I wrap it so I can use it via nautilus or via gvfs-fuse-daemon
View 4 Replies View Relatedsurprisingly come across this file that the ubuntu archive manager is simply unable to unpack.these are some articles that i am trying to download.strangely i have never heard of the format and the page asks me to download "stuffit expander" to allow me to view the pdf files.
however when i download the file saving it on the desktop, and try to open it, archive manager is simply unable to do so!this is the title of the downloaded file -

and its 1.3 MB
and i am as of now unable to open it in any way.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've downloaded some torrents, and someone CONVENIENTLY made them a multiple file archive instead of a single file.
I've tried unrar -x <filename>-part1.rar, which it says it completes, then I don't see the file. What do I need to do? WinRAR usually decompresses them just fine, but on Linux is where I have the problem.
More importantly, why on Earth would anybody do this?
I remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.

am writing a small search program for my class. I have decided to use indexing for my program. Ive researched online about indexing and how search engines do it. If im gonno do that I need to create inverted files to associate files to numbers ( numbers being the index of my paths ) . Now I was wondering what would be the best way to create an inverted file ? I was going to create sql tables using mysql api in C but then again there is no array data type or vectors to store few numbers in a single column in mysql and it is not advised to use Enum or SET
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have been using TightVNC (on XP) to remotely connect to my Ubuntu machine at home while in the office. This just worked. After upgrading to 10.10, I no longer can connect. Errormessage: Failed to connect to server (my ip) Looked at remote desktop settings, but these are not changed. Port forwarding is working and I use an internal fixed ip, so I can't imagine this being a problem (I doublechecked it anyway!). Anyone seen similar behavior> And, more interestingly, anyone know of a way to fix this?

My function and main qwerty keys work on my wireless usb logitech keyboard. My number pad does not. I have gone thru the keyboard on the system menu. I have chosen my keyboard as it was listed. I've been looking through the Debian wiki, searching past topics in the forum, and generally googling, but all to no avail. I'm unable to connect to the internet through any wireless connections, nor through an ethernet cable. I installed the latest weekly image of Debian squeeze. After installation, I found myself on the command line. I installed gnome with
apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment I also tried installing gnome-applets, gnome-netstatus-applet, and gnome-nettool, but I guess they were already installed. When I open System > Administration > Network in Gnome, there's no connections tab in the Network Settings application.

I'm one of those people migrating from Ubuntu and in Ubuntu I had to add a 'rfkill -unblock all' command to my rc.local file for this laptop. Not sure if that's relevant, but thought more info couldn't hurt.

sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart with a warning telling me to use the service utility. Not only that, but despite the port being open it won't allow me to log in, it just hangs, and I have local users enabled (I've used the default .conf file). Does dbus not come installed in 10.04, and if I did install it would it make a difference for restarting the service? Are there further steps needed not available in the tutorial on the Ubuntu Server Guide for 10.04 to enabling local user authentication? -edit- Figured it out, dbus wasn't installed, vsftpd is working fine now.

I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I will post my configuration files below with my current configuration.

View 7 Replies View RelatedUsing UNetBootin on Windows, I flashed a USB keydrive with the Ubuntu 10.04 Minimal CD and proceeded to boot up a brand new PC.
Problem is, after choosing Install, language/keyboard, and then a repository from which to download files, the installer just stops there. I tried two different repositories, to no avail. The network hardware is correctly detected and set through DHCP.
Has someone seen this? Should I use an other option?
I am running ubuntu 11.04 in classic mode with macubuntu theme and the avant window navigator. I am very impressed. I have downloaded kubuntu and have tried it from the live cd. The question I have, is can I also install this on my pc and choose at login which version to boot and do I install it from the cd at boot up or can I install it from the archive manager in ubuntu 11.04.

This is obviously a problem because I can't download any additional packages, and I can't update the version because I'm not able to connect to the internet. I have installed it, but it's only text (which I assume is because I could not install the graphical interface, correct me if I'm blaringly wrong here). So what can I do to install debian on my laptop and be able to use my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 620 network card?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI do several things, involving a lot of different software (coding, image manipulation, drawing, video editing, etc).And where I live, internet is utterly slow, so instead of actually benefiting of the quick Ubuntu install, I am doomed to spend countless days re-downloading my packages each time.Before my last format, having gained a slightly greater understanding of how Linux works, I saved all the content of apt archives, so synaptic would pick the packages already downloaded from there.But it does not! It re-downloads every package.What should I do to have synaptic recognize packages that are already there?
Note: I am NOT looking to create a mirror repository, aptOnCd and whatnot. I also DO NOT want to install packages by hand, one by one or all together.All these solutions are certainly valuable (and I've tried a good bunch of them), but then I have to update manually my mirrored repository and/or install updates manually. Furthermore, it leaves me with two directories with packages, apt archive and ~/my-repository, which is just messy (in my view at least).
Last week I installed the Debian 6.0.4 XFCE on to a system from an iso I burned to DVD. I had no problems.
Today I downloaded the 6.0.5 netinst iso and burned a CD to install on a system which has only a CD reader, not DVD. The install goes fine until I select a download mirror. No matter what mirror I select, I get "Bad Archive Mirror".
When I check the log in virtual console 4, the following message appears: "WARNING**: mirror does not support the specified release (squeeze)"...

I'm trying to setup PS3 media server on my new OpenSuse 11.2 and I'm being unable to connect to the PS3. The multimedia server seems to being working ok, only it has not appear on XMB.
I've been searching on PS3 Media Server forums and try a couple of solutions regarding /etc/hosts and adding full qualified domain name of server to it, but it doesn't seems to work.
