Ubuntu Installation :: No Numbers On Keyboard?
Jun 14, 2011
I have solved with this forums help most of my problems after upgrade. I have one that seems to remain and I am unable to solve. My function and main qwerty keys work on my wireless usb logitech keyboard. My number pad does not. I have gone thru the keyboard on the system menu. I have chosen my keyboard as it was listed. I have tried most suggestions but nothing will bring it back.

am writing a small search program for my class. I have decided to use indexing for my program. Ive researched online about indexing and how search engines do it. If im gonno do that I need to create inverted files to associate files to numbers ( numbers being the index of my paths ) . Now I was wondering what would be the best way to create an inverted file ? I was going to create sql tables using mysql api in C but then again there is no array data type or vectors to store few numbers in a single column in mysql and it is not advised to use Enum or SET

I have upgraded my laptop to 10.04 while having my usb-keyboard plugged in.f I boot the laptop without a plugged in keyboard, the laptop keyboard is not working. It starts working as soon as I plug a usb-keyboard in though.Quite annoying if I take my laptop with me and the first thing after booting is to find a usb-keyboard to plug in Does anyone know where can I reconfigure this? [edit]I just found out, that the laptop keyboar seems to be in numlock mode... meaning that the keys [j,k,l] is mapped to [1,2,3] etc

I was trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 (desktop) on my old PC. But it keeps stopping after I selected keyboard(never leaves this screen).
What can I do? The PC is able to run XP, but I hoped that I could speed up things a bit by using Ubuntu.

I have an AMD Athlon 3200+ 64 and I want to install a dual boot Win7/Xubuntu system. When I try to install Xubuntu 64 bit, but the also the 32 bit version and both Kubuntu versions, the installation stops after the keyboard layout screen. The install completely hangs (no cd or other noticeable activity on the computer) and I have to do a hard reboot to get out of it. I've been looking for a solution and found that the options noapic and/or nolapic in the installer F6 menu might solve this problem,unfortunately they didn't work for me. I've done the CD integrety and memory checks, but no errors were found. I'm pretty lost from here.
I also read installing from the alternative CD might work, but I'm not sure what to expect from this textual installation. If it's only a command-line installer I don't think I will be able to do much with it as I haven't yet been able to find a tutorial on how to use it. Does anyone konw where I can find instructions?

Actually, thats a lie. It works on the initial screen (where you can select how you want to install via command line or text based etc etc).But whatever option i select from there it loses the keyboard.The first screen (asking for keyboard layout) just sits there on english but i am unable to advance. Its as if my keyboard is unplugged (has LED backlights and they turn off as soon as it hits this screen so im guessing its USB driver related).I wanted the alternate to do drive encryption but it doesnt seem to want to know. Normal CD works fine btw.

On startup, I get messages which look like this:
[Code]...
What do the numbers in brackets mean? (I tried looking, but I don't know how to start to search for the answer to that without being too vague). I've noticed they're nearly always progressive (increasing). Do they just refer to the event number? And in my log file viewer, why is there a dmesg and a dmesg.0?

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).
When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.
Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)

I accidentally toggled my eee pc running ubuntu netbook remix so that the keys under the right hand side of the keyboard are switched into 10-key keyboard mode. Usually you would push fn+p to get 0 for example, but somehow I toggled them on and now I can't figure out the key combination to turn it back off. Anybody know how to turn it back to letters?

In a moment of madness I decided to reorganise my mp3 player. I am putting everything into one folder (called 'all'), but first I am renaming the files to the following format:
artist ## songtitle
where ## is a number like 01, 02. This has been pretty straightforward with the songs that already started with a number, because then I could just
rename 's/(dd)/artist $1/' *.mp3
but I have a problem with those tracks that don't already have the track-numbers at the beginning. I suppose what I am asking is: can I turn
All Along the Watchtower.mp3
Purple Haze.mp3
Hey Joe.mp3
into
01 All Along the Watchtower.mp3
02 Purple Haze.mp3
03 Hey Joe.mp3

I just upgraded my 9.10 x64 Server to 10.04 using the standard Update Manager (I have the GNOME desktop installed). The installation went very smoothly, no errors or problems that I noticed. However, after reboot I get the main log in screen, but I can't enter my password because the keyboard seems to be ignored. The mouse is fine, no problems there. I looked at the various keyboard possibilities, and it has choosen the basic "USA" keyboard. It doesn't matter which keyboard type I choose though, it still fails to respond to any keyboard keypress. To be clear, there were no issues with the keyboard before the upgrade. I don't know where to start.

how to re-set the page numbers of a pdf file within evince (without modifiying the pdf file). The point is that I am reading an article, and I would like the set "page 1" as "page 43". modifying page numbers of a pdf file is a bit tricky. So, I want to avoid that. What I wanna do is to make evince "think" page 1 is page 43.

I'm trying to make a bash script that takes away two decimal numbers. This is to work out partitioning information.
Code:
hddsize=`sudo parted -s /dev/sda unit GB print | grep "Disk" | tr -d [A-Z][a-z] | tr -d '/: '`
trimsize="1.5"
partitionendsize=$(($hddsize - $trimsize))
I get an invalid arithmetic operator. Not sure how to minus these two numbers. Is it a floating point issue?

I am working on a project but it consist of a large amount of numbers. I have tried using OpenOffice to produce this list of numbers but it keeps crashing when I reach a certain point. So I was looking for some help. I need to see if someone could either help me with using a script or program to export these numbers into a .txt file or if someone could just make the list for me.
I am looking for a text file that will have the numbers 1000000000 to 9999999999 in order. I understand this is a large amount of numbers but this something I don't have the time to just do manually and each time I try to do it with OpenOffice it crashes around 1009000001. Oh and I need the text file to look like this:
1000000000
1000000001
1000000002
1000000003
