When I click on "Places-->any item" (except 'Computer') the folder opens in "Archive Manager". I have tried resetting the panels but the problem persists.

I am running ubuntu 11.04 in classic mode with macubuntu theme and the avant window navigator. I am very impressed. I have downloaded kubuntu and have tried it from the live cd. The question I have, is can I also install this on my pc and choose at login which version to boot and do I install it from the cd at boot up or can I install it from the archive manager in ubuntu 11.04.

I recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.

When I attempt to run the updates that are found with Update Manager, it simply returns to the Update Manager screen as if nothing happens. The following is what appears in my terminal view. This is a Linux guest VM (VirtualBox) running on a Windows 7 pro 64-bit host.

The Live CD worked fine as did an install to the HD, but I get a message from Update manager that there are updates that need to be applied and these always fail. I've tried selecting different ones in case it is just a particular update, but nothing has updated.
The error message is below
installArchives() failed: Setting up tzdata (2011g-0ubuntu0.11.04) ...

I have upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and I am using the classic ubuntu interface instead of Unity. I am facing problems with the Archive Manager. My problem is that I can open archives but I can not modify them or create a new zip file with the GUI. I get an error saying:
zip error: Invalid command arguments (no such option: -)
The easiest way to reproduce it is by right-clicking on any file, pressing compress and selecting .zip in the file format.

The command tar -xvf wpa_tables.tar gives this error
tar: ./xai-0/334Regency: Cannot open: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
Obviously the backslash is giving tar some problem, but I've been all over the docs and can't figure out how to either make it skip this file or interpret the character literally. Here's my command history to show some of the options I've tried which don't work.
tar --no-wildcards -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --exclude ./xai-0/\334Regency -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --exclude "./xai-0/\334Regency" -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --ignore-command-error -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --ignore-failed-read -xkvf wpa_tables.tar
tar --transform 's/\/slash/g' -xvf wpa_tables.tar ./xai-0/\334Regency
I'm totally out of ideas at this point and would welcome some input from more experienced members.

I have upgraded my Ubuntu to 10.04, in hopes that my problem would dissapear. Sadly, it hasn't. You see, my archive manager isn't cooperating with me and it's not letting me download anything. For example, I tried to download Sony Vegas and it gave me the following error. (Among other things, but this data seems more important.)" End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In thelatter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. "
This occured when I tried to open the "SonyVegas 8.0 exe" . I have unzipped this file. I think "exe" has something to do with Windows, if so, is there a way I can convert this file so it can be adapted to my archive manager? Or is my archive manager not working, correctly? Does anyone else have these problems, also? Please, I want to be able to download things and my archive manager is the reason I can't.

I am running Natty Narwhal with Gnome Classic (I can't get used to Unity). When I click the Trash Can the Archive Manager (file-roller) starts with Could not create the archive
Archive type not supported.I'm sure the default "open with" for the Trash folder has somehow been modified but I can't figure out how to change it back.

I had an old machine running Feisty.I followed the EOL guides and upgraded from 7.04 => 7.10 => 8.04 => 8.10 (intrepid). Now that I'm at intrepid, I want to use the update manager to upgrade to 9.04 (Jaunty). Whenever I launch update manager (System->Administration->Update Manager) everything looks fine until I choose "New distribution release '9.04' is available" and click the Upgrade button.
At this point, Update Manager complains and says "Could not find the release notes" "The server may be overloaded". I'm assuming this could be a faulty URL somewhere, but I wouldn't know where. My sources.list seems to work fine for regular intrepid updates, so not sure there would be anything there that could be the fault. Once I get this error, I can only click "close".
Extracting the upgrade failed. There may be a problem with the network or with the server. Obviously, my general networking is fine (or I wouldn't be able to post this message)..and again, standard updates work fine.Any insight into what is causing this (or maybe how Update Manager works so that I might try a bit of debugging myself?

we need to install gnuplot and synaptic manager fails because Intrepid is unsupported. I know we can update to a newer version but we cannot do it now (we'll do it during summer holidays). What's the best way of installing gnuplot (or some other aplication) on our systems? Should we download from sources and compile? Could we add some special source to our list and download from there?

I have in my pc (ubuntu 10.10 32 bit) a folder with about 10.000 files. It is a samba shared folder and so far I could browse fast and easily those files in another old ( Pentium4 1,5Ghz) PC with WinXP. I installed ubuntu 10.10 but the browsing now is toooooooo slow , although the old Pc's performance is considerably faster than before (when I had WinXP). Also, although the old PC's speed is satisfatory now, would it become even faster if I installed an older ubuntu distro?

I seem to have a small problem. Since september, i hooked up an old Acer laptop (with just 560 RAM and a 16 mib graphical card) to a computer screen, a keyboard and a mouse, so that i had an extra 'computer' for my mother to use. Old people prefer bigger screens to ponder upon.
But anyways, each time i want to update or upgrade the 9.04 Ubuntu distribution, it freezes. This is quite annoying since i really want it to upgrade to 9.10, for possible faster results.

So I attempted to Upgrade 2 days ago from 9.10 to 10.04. I started the upgrade and left my computer alone as it said it would take several hours. When I returned to check on it, It told me the the installation had failed and it was attempting to roll back to the previous installation. Afterward I couldn't access anything on my computer. I'd click a icon and it wouldn't do anything. I manually restarted it and was greeted with a message that it couldn't boot because there was no mount specified.
Since I had backed up all my files I tried to just reinstall ubuntu. However even after I reinstalled I'm greeted with the same message.

I am trying to update using Update Manager and I get this message: Failed to fetch "Failed to fetch [URL]..404 Not Found" My system is 64 days out of date now.
I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.

I'm totally new to this linux thing and I have a very strange problem. I downloaded the .iso and burned it to CD as per instructions. I had intended to install alongside existing WinXP Pro Sp3. Everything seemed to be going fine until it the installer got to the "User Info" Screen where it asks for my name, the computer's name, password, etc. At that point nothing I did would allow the "forward" button to work. I backed up a step or two and went forward again to no avail. I ended up hitting the hard reset button to get out of it. I never saw any error messages even though I scrolled through the install log at the bottom of the install window. Now my HDD is 60 Gb smaller (The part intended for Ubuntu) under Win XP and I have no idea what to do about it.
My system:
Asus P5NE-SLI Mobo
Intel Core2 Duo 8400 3.0 Ghz
2 Gb ram at 800Mhz
Nvidia 9800GT GPU 512Mb
Win XP seems to be working normally except for the loss of HDD space.
