Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot - Rebuilding GRUB

Nov 21, 2010

through a series of mistakes i have managed to take a working system and make it unable to boot. my two objectives right now are to back up my data, and to make my system bootable. here's how i got here. i used the Upgrade Manager to upgrade to 10.04 thinking it would solve a problem i was having with my previous installation. when that had completed i found I was unable to boot into 10.04. The system would hang after echoing the message "checking battery state." I attempted to rebuild my grub file, thinking this would solve the 'battery state' problem. this was a mistake. I ended up deleting it, and now there's no menu.lst file in its place.

currently when i boot up normally (i.e., with no Live CD) I automatically go into the rescue mode. so far i haven't managed to enter a command that rescue mode recognizes. alternatively, i can boot from the installation CD for Ubuntu 10.04. per this page: [URL] I take these steps:

1. boot from the installation CD.
2. go into terminal
3. type these commands:

Ubuntu Installation :: RAID 0 & 9.10 - Rebuilding Grub And Wouldn't Work

Feb 1, 2010

I started out with a RAID 0 of 3x 500GB drives. Partitioned to a 200gb Windows 7 install (plus the 100mb partition), a 50gb partition I was going to use for Ubuntu 9.10, and the around 1081GB NTFS storage partition. It wouldn't work, I tried a bunch of things, EasyBCD, ect, rebuilding grub, and everything else... wouldn't work for me. So I gave up, backed up everything and then rebuilt my RAID into to "separate" drives so that I could just change the booting drive depending on the flavour of frustration I was looking for at the time. Installed W7 back, installed Ub9.10 back. Windows loaded through it's drive fine. Ubuntu will not freaking load. So I ran a script I found laying around on one of the many.... MANY posts I read and will attach the outcome.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot After Grub Loads?

Aug 9, 2010

The problem is I've set up a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu was working fine till 2 days back but now when I select Ubuntu from the grub screen i get a whole lot of numbers next which it'll say Usb drive or sd card reader etc.. these go by quickly and then the comp stops running. If i press enter on the keyboard I get Initramfs and then i can type but nothing happens even if I type reboot. if I press cntrl+alt+F2 then i get a blank screen with flashing cursor. Same with recovery mode. Windows boots fine. The grub2 screen comes fine. The last thing i did before this happened is reconfigure the grub2 screen, but it seems to be fine (i had added a background img and reordered the boot options) I did not edit grub.cfg. I would prefer not to reinstall it as iv done it a half a dozen times already in the last few weeks..

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Into Windows After Upgrading Grub

Apr 10, 2010

I upgraded from grub to grub2 recently, and during an update of my system, it ran the update-grub command which prompted a window asking me where to install Grub. Since I didn't know what partition to install it to and the help suggested to install it to all if I was unsure what partition to install it to - I accidentally installed Grub to my Windows partitions (both the regular and the recovery console).

So now, I can't boot into Windows - the computer just hangs after Grub with a blinking cursor and I have to perform a hard reset. Is there any way for me to restore the boot record for the windows partition without having to reinstall windows from the ground up?! I can't use Linux for my webbanking and other important tasks, so (unfortunately) I need Windows back desperately!

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Upgrade - With Image #22 And Unable To Boot Windows

May 17, 2010

I recently performed a reinstall of ubuntu after mucking up my partitions, and I am running it dual booted with windows 7.

I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.

It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

I've attached the output for:

Code:

Problem symptoms:

1) Weird upgrade error in apt-get
2) Unable to boot windows 7
3) Unable to activate proprietary drivers
4) Perpetually being reminded to restart

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot From Grub Prompt - CD On Lucid / Sort It?

Sep 1, 2011

First, I know there are numerous threads on grub errors but I have tried all possible solutions and that's why I'm here. My issue is that I'm not able to boot from the grub prompt as described for installing grub from a LiveCD https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD. I can see grub is installed but is missing the kernal and other files. code...

I ran the boot_info script and the output is attached. From what I can tell it cannot even detect an OS being installed, but I've kept everything up to date and never had any issues. Everything was fine yesterday and now this. Also, I tried the Boot Repair CD and that did not work.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10mins To Boot After Rebuilding A R5 Partition?

Jan 19, 2010

I have/had a working system that took maybe 20seconds to boot. However due to an oops with hardware (power cable fell out) I lost 2 disks in a raid5...so I had to rebuild it, now the new partition wont mount on boot and it takes 180seconds Plus to get a control-d prompt. If I remove the mount from fstab and reboot and then mount manually after a normal boot its perfect and works....so it appears something in the boot/mount process is confused....

The q is where do I start looking to fix this?

I suspect its the LVM looking at the ext4 system and getting upset that its isnt LVM'd? Is that possible? The original partiton was /dev/i2o/hda1 and was not lvm'd and neither is the new....so i dont see why.. multiple 180 second timeouts!

Software :: Unable To Boot Into GRUB Loader: GRUB Command Shell Boots Up?

Sep 2, 2009

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

Debian Installation :: How Long Takes Rebuilding Official Kernel ?

Jan 2, 2011

Here are 2 questions

1.In the last line of the debian kernel handbook 4.2.2 Applying patches

It is possible to apply extra patches to the source before starting the build. First, you should apply the existing patches by running:

You will then find the patched source in the subdirectories debian/build/source_arch_none (default) and debian/build/source_arch_featureset (featuresets added).

You should apply the extra patches in the appropriate subdirectory. where can I find the "extra patchies" and how to do?

2.Even though More than 8 hours have passed, 4.2.3 Building many packages

To build all possible packages for this architecture, run:

To build all architecture-dependent packages, run:

To build all architecture-independent packages, run:

The 1st command still working. what is the all possible packages? and what I am doing?

I am just trying to rebuild debian linux kernel 2.6.26-2, Did I misunderstand?

In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].

In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.

I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD

Chose advanced istall

Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu

I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted

I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

Boot Info:

Code:

When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. Ubuntu :: Grub Error 15 - Unable To Boot Anything From A CD Because It Just Waits And Then Jumps To The HDD?

Nov 27, 2010

I decided to install Ubuntu on my desktop after the setup went well on my laptop and I liked the OS. I already had Windows 7 and Backtrack 9 installed on my HDD, so when I was in setup I took the 200gb partition for BT9 and formatted SDA5 to ext3 with "/" as the root. Then checked "format" and selected SDA5 from dropdown list and continued to install.Everything went smooth in the installation and I was prompted to reboot which I did assuming I would soon see a GRUB screen. Instead I got an error saying

"Grub loading stage1.5.
Grub loading, please wait...
error 15"

and then the computer just freezes. I've tried to boot from CD but I just get "CD-ROM Boot Priority ...Boot Ready" and then after about 30 seconds it tries to boot from the HDD and I get the same error.I've read that I need to configure GRUB somehow but I have no idea how to do that and I can't boot anything from a CD because it just waits and then jumps to the HDD. I guess what i'm asking is if there is a way to configure GRUB from the BIOS menu or make it possible to be able to boot from a CD.

Ubuntu :: GRUB Leaves Win7 Unable To Boot / Enable This?

After the Windows install disk failed to repair it, I reinstalled the Windows system and then used the Ubuntu live-CD to restore GRUB in order to be able to boot into Linux again. Now I have the same problem as when I started (although the error screen is somewhat different now).

Does anyone know how to break this "evil circle" of mine?

I am using the 10.10 (GRUB 2 in other words).

Fedora :: Unable To Boot - Grub Error

Sep 2, 2009

I installed windows and haven't been able to boot to fedora since. Without a boot disk my machine complains 'BOOTMGR is missing'. If I use a boot disk to access grub on another linux partition (/dev/sda5) I can try to boot my fedora install using its old grub.conf settings. However this gives me the grub error:

Code:
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64 ro root=UUID=63608748-e626-4a3f-9232-c836524f606f rhgb quiet

Error 2: Bad file or directory type
Darn grub thinks the file system type is ext2fs - this makes me think windows might have written something (perhaps its bootloader) to the first partition rather than the MBR.
