Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 10.4 Inside Win7 Without Creating Partition
May 22, 2010I am trying to install Ubuntu inside Windows 7 without the hassle of creating a partition. Here's what I have done: I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso and then burned it onto CD. Ran Wubi from the CD. Selected "Install inside Windows". Waited for the Ubuntu installer to finish and then rebooted. Selected Ubuntu. Ubuntu starts to load and all. Then it ask me to pick which partition where to install Ubuntu. I don't want to create a partition to install Ubuntu. I want it inside Windows.

Nov 29, 2010Around 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

Apr 3, 2011I have my HDD in 3 partitions. 1 has Ubuntu 10.10, the 2nd has XP Pro, and the 3rd is a generic FAT 32 for all my music, photos, docs, etc. I was wondering if it was possible to run my XP Pro partition from within my Ubuntu partition so I am not constantly booting to and from XP to perform JUST a quick simple task. I installed Virtual Box OSE from the software center but it looks like it only runs .ISO images.

Jan 15, 2010im trying to shrink my vista partition with gparted inside ubuntu. I run gparted (and yes i have ntfsprogs) but when i select the ntfs partition and select move/resize it brings up free space preceding... new size... and free space following.so when i input the new size the resize/move button greys out and when i change the freespace following it just puts back my original new size and back and forth.from what i have read i need to run the gparted livecd and go from there. is this true? i know how to do it with diskpart in windows, how to in ubuntu and eventually get rid of windows.my system is 64-bit. I alloted 10 GB inside windows while installing ubuntu using wubi. Now it says only 34 MB space is free. Is it possible to increase the root size inside windows. My both OS are on C drive and it has about 15 GB free. I would like to allocate & GB to ubuntu.

Sep 4, 2009I've just started playing with virtualization and I started my first VM. I would like to know if it's possible for the host machine to mount the partitions of the VM when it's closed. Right now the VM uses /dev/vg0/vm1 and has 3 partitions on it. I tried mount /dev/vg0/vm1 ~/vm1 at first before I remembered that I'd need a way to mount a specific partition inside the logical volume, not the volume itself!

Dec 19, 2009I have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... ( crack crack crack... ).To see the partitions inside the "big" file, i have used fdisk -l, and damn there is only one partition, but how can i mount the content???
I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.
General :: Resizing Ubuntu Root Partition Installed In "Install Inside Win" Mode
Jul 5, 2010I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop i386 using "Install inside Windows" option. In the installation i dedicated 3GB for the root parition. Now i have a Windows 7 and a Ubuntu.
Currently, I need more space for the Ubuntu root parition (just 50MB freespace remained!). I realized the it is a simple 3GB file in the Windows and root parition is virtually in that file.
So it should be possible to increase the size of the root parition. But i cannot find any way for this.
I do not want to reinstall the my Ubuntu or add another partition. Is there any painless way to just increase the size of root parition?

So, I have xulrunner-1.9.2 already, so I tried to install 1.9.1 anyway, and it appeared to install, and I now have 1.9.1.9 and 1.9.2.3 installed, but trying to install libgsj0 results in the same error as above.

May 10, 2010I have installed these OS's in this order:
1 - Vista
2 - Ubuntu Server 9.04
3 - Ubuntu Desk 10.04
4 - BT4
I recently upgraded my most often used OS (#3) to 10.04 version and it updated GRUB to GRUB2 as part of the dist-upgrade. I have a feeling that I wasn't careful enough when installing BT4 or I made a mistake in the partitioning. I had plenty of space that was free waiting to be used by some other os and I designated some of that space for BT4.
When I got it all installed (off of a USB live boot) I rebooted and noticed it was back to grub one. The Vista install and the Ubuntu Server install both work still... but the recently updated (to Grub2) Ubuntu Desk install now hangs immediately after selecting it and pressing enter in Grub. I can mount the partition within BT4 just fine and see that all my data is still there, it just won't boot.
What I've tried Using BT4 to install Grub2. (no luck) Installing Grub1.5 back after finding Grub2 didn't work. (no luck) My plan When I get home from work today I'm going to take the "quiet" option off of the boot command in Grub for that Ubuntu OS and see if there's any error it's dumping before it hangs.
Hope that someone has had this issue before and can just tell me a straight forward way of resolving this issue. I'd prefer to use GRUB2 as my boot loader.

Fedora Installation :: Putting /boot Inside LVM With Grub2?
May 22, 2011I have just converted from using Arch Linux for the last year to using Fedora 14. So far I have been having a blast but I really enjoy the idea of putting /boot inside an LVM container and that is how I had my Arch system built. So I wanted to do a learning experience and did a standard install on my 60GB SSD. Which ended up with a 500MB /boot outside LVM, a ~30GB / and ~30GB /home inside LVM. Now I really like spreading things out onto different LV's that I can resize but for now I am focusing on getting /boot and grub2 working. So after the install I did a complete backup with Clonezilla to a spare drive and set to work. I shrunk /home's LV to 10GB to give me plenty of space to work with and created boot_lv inside LVM at 128MB.
So here is my first question:After 2 hours trolling through the forums, documentation and blogs I believe that the ideal size for any /boot is 512MB due to during pre-upgrades Fedora loads a bunch of data to /boot. Would I be correct in both assuming this size and the reasoning behind this?After creating this LV I did another Clonezilla clone of the drive and got back into the Fedora install. From their I moved over all the data in /boot to my boot_lv mounted on /mnt/newboot and unmounted /boot. Then mounted /boot_lv in its place and installed grub2 and gettext ( <--- I think? It needed something like this) and did a grub2-install, grub2-mkconfig and grub2-setup all with commands I do not remember nor documented due to how many changes I have made and times I had to re-image the box from messup's and failures. So in the end can anyone point me in the direction of a nice guide on putting Fedora 14 completely in LVM which seems not to exist in Google and Fedora Forums ( to my knowledge.) Even a set of commands for taking a fresh install and doing.
EDIT: Today I managed to get Debian 6 to have /boot moved into LVM no problem. I documented it very well and plan to implement it on Fedora which I do greatly hope it works.EDIT 2: SUCCESS!!! Took me all weekend to get it working in Fedora but it bloody works! My notes are not the best so I am imaging it right now and am going through step by step again tomorrow and documenting it all on my laptop and writing a tutorial for the Guides section of this forum. It's kinda funny that the only thing holding me back was something rather stupid

Fedora Installation :: Installation - Creating A Swap Partition Or A Boot Partition?
Jul 27, 2009I have a brand new thinkpad X301 with 4GB of RAM and thinking of getting fedora 11 on it. The plan is to have it triple boot with vista/seven and hopefully OSx86. I am aware of the 4 primary partitions limit on an MBR disk. I was thinking of having a swap file instead of swap partition and not creating a boot partition as well. If I install the boot loader(GRUB?) on the root partition will I be able to boot it without any problems by using vista's boot loader?
Or Maybe I should install GRUB on the MBR and add all the other operating systems on it? Does anyone have any objections for not creating a swap partition or a boot partition? When comes to desktop environment I've been using KDE in the past, is there any major advantage of using Gnome over it? KDE seems to look really nice on fedora where Gnome is maybe more stable?
Ubuntu Installation :: Os_prober Calls The Vista Partition The Windows Recovery Partition
Feb 20, 2011Two days ago I repartitioned my laptop HD and added the latest Ubuntu (2.6.35-25-generic) to the existing Vista and existing Ubuntu (2.6.32-28-generic via upgrades from 9.14(?)). Prior to this install it was using Grub with menu.lst from the old/upgrade Ubuntu. After the install the boot menu labels the partition with Vista as the Windows Recovery partition and the recovery partition item is no longer present.
At first I wondered how I could get Vista to boot. I found that SuperGrub cd would boot it OK. Then, it dawned on me that the boot menu item was not the recovery partition, but instead the Vista OS partition mislabelled . Vista loads just fine from it. The recovery partition is no longer listed as it was with Grub/menu.lst. SuperGrub will not boot the recovery partition, showing an error "missing BOOTMGR".
'os-prober' produces--

I edited boot/grub/grub.cfg so the boot menu item is labelled correctly, but suspect that it will revert back when there is an upgrade.

Sep 1, 2011i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

try (0,1) : ext2 :
and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.
