I have ubuntu 10.04 running inside windows and want to make it the proprietary OS. I have an acer aspire 5517, are there any problems associated with this laptop's hardware and ubuntu.

If you use a Linux-incompatible keylogger such as eBlaster on my computer, will it still record my keystrokes because I'm running it in Windows? Or will it be unable to detect anything since I'd be typing in Ubuntu?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 inside VMware Player running under Windows Vista and I can't connect to the internet or the host computer from the Ubuntu.
I have set all the VMware services to manual (like VMware DHCP Service), but starting them manually doesn't help.
In VMware, the network seems to work (there is a green dot beside the network icon) and I have tried both Bridged and NAT settings.
ifconfig doesn't show the eth1 interface, unless I give it as a parameter (or use -a). I think this means that Ubuntu thinks that the network isn't connected at all.
When you install inside windows it refers installation size???

I've been trying to figure out the cause of system hangs with slack 13 for a a week or so. I get random total freezes with the keyboard LED's blinking at me and the only solution is to do a hard-reset. I was using a self-compiled 2.6.31.6 kernel on 32bit Slack with similar results, but thought it had more to do with several bad starts as I got used to Slack's way of doing things... eventually I decided I'd made enough bad starts with that installation and after reading a bit about _current fixing some stability issues added another installation to my machine using Slackware64 and upgrading to _current. It worked great, then I installed the NVIDIA proprietary driver. The system hangs are back.
Sometimes they happen quickly, sometimes they take hours, sometimes while I'm working, sometimes when the machine has been idle for hours. For a couple of days I've been going back and forth between the NVIDIA propreitary and the nv driver. I've run memtest86 for 4.5 hours and not a single error, I'm running this on a new HD, I even upgraded the case fan (the old one was starting to complain!).
I've also installed different versions of the driver 185.x.x, 190.42.x. I've used slackbuilds, I've used "sh NVIDA.xxx.RUN" I've said "yes" to everything the installer asked, I've said "no".
So far no hangs with the nv driver. I've been leaving one or the other running at all times and no hangs with the nv driver, but within hours with the proprietary driver.
All that is to say I'm confident the issue is with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, OR something in my kernel options that only shows up when I'm using the NVIDIA driver.
Is anyone else running this successfully?
SLACKWARE64 kernel 2.6.32 (same behavior on 32bit with 2.6.31.6) compiled kernel with "make oldconfig" then "make localmodconfig" BEFORE the NVIDIA driver was installed. ext3 filesystem (same behavior with ext4 on previous installation)

I am running Windows 7 inside Virtual Machine Manager - running on Cent OS 5.6. My problem is that the Windows 7 'Window', is only about half the size of the screen. Is there any to change the resolution of the OS running inside Virtual Machine Manager?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI sshed to a server a week ago, then ran *screen* and created a few windows in my screen session. I then ran a few programs on those screens. All the programs were running in the background (I run them with &). I did not close or detach from the screen sessions. So I was still connected to those screen sessions from my client machine.
Then, this morning I find my client machine rebooted. When I do screen -ls I find there are no screens available to reattach to. But that is not the worst part. The strange thing is that all my processes (which were running on the server) have disappeared as well, even though they were running in the background. I thought 1) using screen I will be able to re-attach to old screens when my client restarts, 2) If I have sshed to a server and have run programs in the background, restarting the client should not stop those programs (even if I had not used screen).
I want to do the install inside windows mode, but I want to use all of the 104gb instead of only 30. This was the cause to another problem I recently had (running out of space). How do I install inside windows with all 104gb?

I run gparted (and yes i have ntfsprogs) but when i select the ntfs partition and select move/resize it brings up free space preceding... new size... and free space following.so when i input the new size the resize/move button greys out and when i change the freespace following it just puts back my original new size and back and forth.from what i have read i need to run the gparted livecd and go from there. is this true? i know how to do it with diskpart in windows, how to in ubuntu and eventually get rid of windows.my system is 64-bit. When needed, I usually generate a download script and individually enter each line into a web browser on my Windows based work computer, which has broadband, saving to a USB drive.
The last upgrade though requires too many packages (230+) to do individually. Is there an easy, quick way to run the download scripts on a windows machine?

In short, what I'd like to find is a workaround to install Grub2 onto a USB stick, from a PC running Windows, without using a GUI. After searching, I don't find any way to install Grub2 from Windows. I do have a nice little MS-DOS batch file that installs syslinux onto a USB stick. It's simple, fairly fool-proof, and I'd like to convert it to install Grub2.Did find an example of running grub-install without actually installing anything: grub-install --grub-setup=/bin/true /dev/sdaSo, IFAIKT, this just creates the Grub2 'boot.img' file, and maybe also modifies the 'core.img' file? Is that right? If so, then a little DOS utility to write a USB's MBR using the boot.img should work, yes?
However, I notice the boot.img file is 512 bytes. As I understand it, a drive's partition table is included in that space. I'd like to take that boot.img and use it to install Grub2 on any arbitrary USB stick, without altering the existing partition table. If I snip off the last 72 bytes so the image is only 440 bytes, it seems like this should work (assuming that every USB stick will have Grub2 installed in the /boot/grub subdirectory).If this sounds right, is there a DOS-based MBR update utility that you would recommend? I want to do this so for frugal install of linux distros such as puppy, slitaz, etc. I have used WinGrub on Windows XP and it worked fine. But I don't think that will work on Windows 7.

We have 8 machines powering a digital signage system. The machines are not physically accessible (without extreme difficulty) and are currently running windows XP with a VNC server for control.
I want them to run Ubuntu instead. Is there any way anyone can think of that I can do this? My only thought so far is WUBI...but once it boots into Ubuntu ssh isn't installed by default and vnc isn't enabled by default so I wouldn't be able to control it.
Also I'd really like to completely wipe out Windows and use only Ubuntu.

1) was running ubuntu 10.10 64bit with burg
2) Installed windows 7.. it got removed.
3) So boot via ubuntu usb and ran
sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/home
sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/boot
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
reboot
now its stuck at grub> .. I am unable to fix this issue How can I get my grub / burg running again with windows as option currently to boot i do
grub> root (hd0,1)
grub> chainloader +1
grub> boot

I just received my laptop this week and have been tweaking my laptop to acquire more stability. I just installed the NVIDIA proprietary drivers for the NVS 3100M chipset and I have a residual windows that wont disappear even after reboot. Even after reinstalling the NVIDIA driver it stays. Is there some way to flush the framebuffer?
