Fedora Installation :: Putting /boot Inside LVM With Grub2?

May 22, 2011

I have just converted from using Arch Linux for the last year to using Fedora 14. So far I have been having a blast but I really enjoy the idea of putting /boot inside an LVM container and that is how I had my Arch system built. So I wanted to do a learning experience and did a standard install on my 60GB SSD. Which ended up with a 500MB /boot outside LVM, a ~30GB / and ~30GB /home inside LVM. Now I really like spreading things out onto different LV's that I can resize but for now I am focusing on getting /boot and grub2 working. So after the install I did a complete backup with Clonezilla to a spare drive and set to work. I shrunk /home's LV to 10GB to give me plenty of space to work with and created boot_lv inside LVM at 128MB.

So here is my first question:After 2 hours trolling through the forums, documentation and blogs I believe that the ideal size for any /boot is 512MB due to during pre-upgrades Fedora loads a bunch of data to /boot. Would I be correct in both assuming this size and the reasoning behind this? After creating this LV I did another Clonezilla clone of the drive and got back into the Fedora install. From their I moved over all the data in /boot to my boot_lv mounted on /mnt/newboot and unmounted /boot. Then mounted /boot_lv in its place and installed grub2 and gettext ( <--- I think? It needed something like this) and did a grub2-install, grub2-mkconfig and grub2-setup all with commands I do not remember nor documented due to how many changes I have made and times I had to re-image the box from messup's and failures. So in the end can anyone point me in the direction of a nice guide on putting Fedora 14 completely in LVM which seems not to exist in Google and Fedora Forums ( to my knowledge.) Even a set of commands for taking a fresh install and doing.

EDIT: Today I managed to get Debian 6 to have /boot moved into LVM no problem. I documented it very well and plan to implement it on Fedora which I do greatly hope it works.EDIT 2: SUCCESS!!! Took me all weekend to get it working in Fedora but it bloody works! My notes are not the best so I am imaging it right now and am going through step by step again tomorrow and documenting it all on my laptop and writing a tutorial for the Guides section of this forum. It's kinda funny that the only thing holding me back was something rather stupid

Fedora Installation :: Booting Without Putting Grub In The MBR?

Jan 17, 2011

I am shortly getting a new computer, It will arrive with Windows 7 on one disk and will have a second disk, on which I will install Fedora. In the past, when I've set up a dual boot system, I always used the standard configuration with the first part of grub put in the MBR. But this time I would like to put grub entirely in the Linux disk and then use Windows 7's boot loader to boot. I set up another computer that way where the disk originally came with Vista. But in that case, I set it up the standard way and then changed it afterwards to use the Vista boot loader.

This time, I want to set it up when installing Linux so grub is entirely on the second Linux disk. So until I manage to figure out how to get the Windows boot loader to do the job, I need a separate way to boot Linux, say from a CD with grub on it. But that CD should have the appropriate grub configuration on it. The easiest way I know to create such a CD is from Fedora, but there is the problem that I first need to get into Fedora to do it. I can think of several ways to approach that problem, i.e., using the installation disc in rescue mode or using some raw grub booter created from my old system. But I would like to keep things as simple and direct as possible, since otherwise I'm sure there will be false starts and a lot of fiddling.

So could someone direct me to some simple instructions to do what I want as quickly as possible. In particular, are there any options to do it in the installation process?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 - Turning A Dual Boot Into Single Boot?

Feb 10, 2010

I recently got a netbook and setup as dual boot between win7 starter and 9.10 (64bit). Win 7 starter is not impressive so i want to nuke it and give the space all to my /USR partion. I am comfortable working with Gparted and assume that i can launch using my gparted live usb and delete the windows partion and then resize the /usr partion.

what changes do i need to make w/ Grub2? I would prefer not to see the Grub menu at all and have it load right the main kernel if possible. Also, if this is possible is there a way to get to the Grub menu during boot should i need to select a different kernel?

It hangs just after the 'Boot from CD' thing in my BIOS.I've had 1.97 working on my PC about 24 hours ago, but I decided to start afresh and go for Xubuntu 10.10.I'll post the PC specs in the morning, but in the meantime, does anyone know how to fix this? It's going to be a Xubuntu only system, and I've tried to repair the GRUB files via the Live CD and here.

Ubuntu Installation :: USB Boot Via GRUB2?

Mar 26, 2011

So I have a really old (about 10 years) desktop PC manufactured by Packard Bell, and would like to get Lubuntu 10.10 running on it. I had previously burnt a CD with it, but boot time was incredibly slow on the machine and installation of Lubuntu crashed my system. As a result, I created a LiveUSB (as you do).

When I entered my CMOS, I discovered the BIOS on my machine isn't able to boot from USB, and I wasn't able to find a BIOS update for my AMIBIOS chip on the American Megatrends website. So I booted my GParted Live CD and created an ext4 partition at /dev/sda3, which I proceeded to install GRUB2 onto via the commands:

Code:
$ sudo su
# mkdir /mnt/grub/
# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/grub/
# grub-isntall --no-floppy --root-directory=/mnt/grub /dev/sda

This, as planned, succeeded; I can now get into a GRUB2 prompt when my machine boots...! The only problem is, GRUB2 won't detect my USB...or any device other than my hard drive

So, is there any way I can get GRUB2 to find my USB?

P.S. The USB works fine on my laptop, which does support USB booting. I can also boot the USB on my laptop via its GRUB2 command line, using:

Code:
grub> set root='(hd1,1)'
grub> chainloader +1
grub> boot

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Won't Boot The Windows

May 3, 2010

I have a asus eeepc 1101ha. With Karmic,it would boot into w7 without problems.I installed Lucid on another partition, and after that the w7 grub entry would leave me with a blinking cursor in the left top corner, and hang.

I booted with the w7 dvd, ran bootrec.exe to restore mbr and bootmgr, and the booted into w7 to confirm. It was working. Then I booted with the live dvd, mounted the lucid partition, and installed grub. Now choosing the w7 entry would ask for the boot media, and pressing any key would bring me back to the grub menu. Lucid and karmic boot without problems.

Installing grub from karmic now gave the same error. Running update-grub didn't change anything. As I had to use w7, I booted again from the dvd, and restored again mbr and bootmgr. Booted into w7, used it, then once again to the live cd, to reinstall grub, and once again the w7 entry in grub makes grub ask for the boot media.I've attached my boot info script.Ah, I also played with the bootable flag for the /dev/sda1 partition, but it didn't change anything.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot OS - Grub2 / Device.map

Aug 25, 2010

I used to have 2 HDDs for ubuntu: 1 x 80GB and 1 x 500GB The 500GB disk was my /home directory and is now used exclusively for Windows 7. I have now moved /home to the 80GB drive and have modified /etc/fstab to point /home to /home rather than /dev/sdb1. However, I cannot boot into ubuntu. I have tried using Super Boot Disk cd-rom but still no joy. I think I need to fix grub and have tried by booting into a Live-CD and following a tutorial I found on the forums but it complains about not being able to find a device.map I guess this has something to do with the fact that the 500GB HDD is now gonoe but am not sure how to resolve this issue. how to recreate this file but the command failed.

System setup:

It's a Dell XPS400 PC with 160 GB HDD. I have a non-LVM, primary partition for the boot file system (/boot) of 200 MB. I also have seven logical volumes (LVM partitions): six for each of the /(root), swap, /home, /usr, /var and /tmp, and one vbox_win_xp_base as a raw disk for running Win XP in the Virtualbox. I went on to configure all these without rebooting the system in between. Later I also updated to the kernel version 2.6.31._20. Next day I decided to reboot my system. But then the bootloader (GRUB2 in my case) won't able to boot it and gives the error mentioned above.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 - No Known Boot Loader Installed In MBR

Mar 12, 2010

I am trying to dual-boot windows xp and ubuntu 8.04LTS from two separate hard drives, on a compaq d510 evo SFF. With research, the best way to do that seemed to be to upgrade to Grub 2 and all would be well...not so much. I installed each OS with the other hard drive removed, fyi. I believe that this tells me that I SHOULD be able to boot off either drive, if I could get Grub 2 to recognize...

Code:

I have also tried adding the proper code to the 40 custom file, and while I could at least get it to acknowledge my changes, I couldn't seem to find the magic code to get it right....
The other thing I tried was adding GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2: No Way To Update The Boot Menu?

Jun 25, 2010

I upgraded my main box to Ubuntu 10.04 and everything runs fine, except for a problem with grub: I can't modify the boot menu in any way, I'm stuck with what grub2 thought was the optimal setup at installation time (and it got it wrong, btw). The current boot menu lists:

- my older 9.10 install in sdb2 (one kernel)
- legacy windows XP install on sda1
- my even older 9.04 install in sdb1 (two kernel versions)
- my new install in sdb3, with only one kernel (the one coming with the distro CD)

I tried anything I could think of to modify this menu:

- modify the /etc grub config file then running sudo update-grub
- using a specific app (system manager? don't remember its name)
- upgrading to the latest kernel
- removing and reinstalling grub

to no avail: the menu is still there in the above form, and I have to manually select the 10.04 (old) kernel by hand every time I reboot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 / Dual Boot System

Nov 23, 2010

Been using Linux for many many years but Grub2 is annoying the heck out of me at the moment.

My home desktop PC is set up as follows:

/dev/sda 40GB 10k Raptor with Ubuntu 10.10 installed
/dev/sdb 500GB HDD formatted to ext4
/dev/sdc 500GB HDD split up as follows:

/dev/sdc1 80gb NTFS partition with Win7 installed
/dev/sdc1 Remaining drive space NTFS but nothing on it yet

Grub2 refuses to detect that Windows is installed on the 3rd HDD. I've googled and spent hours trying all sorts of things to get it to detect it and add it to my boot menu.

If I disconnect all drives except the Windows drive it boots up straight into Win7, so it's healthy and happy. (as healthy and happy as Windows can be, I need it for work purposes only!)

Does anyone have any tips on what would be the best method to force grub to realise that Windows is sitting there?

As far as I understand, the Win7 partition should be (hd2,1) does that sound right to you?

I haven't tried booting off an Ubuntu CD and re-installing grub, since I can get into Linux and all the guides seem to be about how to restore grub after a Windows install eats it...

(Yes, I know writing grub.cfg by hand is not very smart. But I have a special situation: I wrote my own grub.cfg on a dedicated boot partition from where I chainload to other grub on other partitions. Those secondary grubs generate their grub.cfgs on the fly, so everything is OK )
