Ubuntu :: Possible To Run XP Partition From Inside 10.10?
Apr 3, 2011
I have my HDD in 3 partitions. 1 has Ubuntu 10.10, the 2nd has XP Pro, and the 3rd is a generic FAT 32 for all my music, photos, docs, etc. I was wondering if it was possible to run my XP Pro partition from within my Ubuntu partition so I am not constantly booting to and from XP to perform JUST a quick simple task. I installed Virtual Box OSE from the software center but it looks like it only runs .ISO images.

Around 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

im trying to shrink my vista partition with gparted inside ubuntu. I run gparted (and yes i have ntfsprogs) but when i select the ntfs partition and select move/resize it brings up free space preceding... new size... and free space following.so when i input the new size the resize/move button greys out and when i change the freespace following it just puts back my original new size and back and forth.from what i have read i need to run the gparted livecd and go from there. is this true? i know how to do it with diskpart in windows, how to in ubuntu and eventually get rid of windows.my system is 64-bit. I am trying to install Ubuntu inside Windows 7 without the hassle of creating a partition. Here's what I have done: I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso and then burned it onto CD. Ran Wubi from the CD. Selected "Install inside Windows". Waited for the Ubuntu installer to finish and then rebooted. Selected Ubuntu. Ubuntu starts to load and all. Then it ask me to pick which partition where to install Ubuntu. I don't want to create a partition to install Ubuntu. I want it inside Windows.

sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/mapper/VG_GUESTS-LV_NTFSDATA1 /mnt/NTFSDATA1

I've just started playing with virtualization and I started my first VM. I would like to know if it's possible for the host machine to mount the partitions of the VM when it's closed. Right now the VM uses /dev/vg0/vm1 and has 3 partitions on it. I tried mount /dev/vg0/vm1 ~/vm1 at first before I remembered that I'd need a way to mount a specific partition inside the logical volume, not the volume itself!

I have the following /etc/fstab:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
[Code]....
This is, incidentally, the same message that I see while booting. The error message goes away if I comment out the line in fstab starting with /dev/sdc.

I have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... ( crack crack crack... ).To see the partitions inside the "big" file, i have used fdisk -l, and damn there is only one partition, but how can i mount the content???
I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop i386 using "Install inside Windows" option. In the installation i dedicated 3GB for the root parition. Now i have a Windows 7 and a Ubuntu.
Currently, I need more space for the Ubuntu root parition (just 50MB freespace remained!). I realized the it is a simple 3GB file in the Windows and root parition is virtually in that file.
So it should be possible to increase the size of the root parition. But i cannot find any way for this.
I do not want to reinstall the my Ubuntu or add another partition. Is there any painless way to just increase the size of root parition?

I was wondering if its possible to resize my actual ubuntu "partition" inside windows, when I installed Ubuntu I didn't think I would get to love this OS, but I ended up loving Ubuntu and I have been downloading many files, installing interesting apps, and using my HD space in different ways. The problem started today when a popup alerted me about the lack of space for my filesI googled for answers, I found many tutorials on how to resize partitions but my problem is that I installed ubuntu inside windows and I only have one partition,

I am not able to access Amazon's Look Inside - the facility to inspect a few pages of books. (I have never been able to do this.) I have tried both at work (via a direct connection to a high-speed backbone) and at home (via Sky ISP). I can see the cover of the book but nothing beyond that - it says the page has expired or is invalid. But using Firefox on WinXP, I can access Look Inside happily both at home and at work.
Does anyone else have this problem with Ubuntu? Amazon's technical people just sent me a load of flannel blaming my ISP, my software, etc. They say no one else has raised this.
If somebody could try it and let me know, I'd be grateful for the results. Am I missing a plug-in?
Lucid + Firefox 3.6.3 on both sites

I've just installed ubuntu 10.04 server on an old box to use as a home server for network storage. I've managed to get wireless working, and now have started to tinker with the base system (it's more of an experimental machine than a critical backup server!). I've installed xorg-core and JWM, and have set it up to function as a basic GUI in case my main box goes down and I need access to these forums. I can start JWM by using
Code: startx, but I need to know how to end the X server from inside the gui, so that I can create a kind of 'exit' button. I know I can end the session by going back to tty1 with ctrl-alt-f1 and using ctrl-c, but is there a way of doing this from inside of the gui? Is it even possible?

During two instances now I have had to create a .js file in a folder. In one instance, (POLIPO) I can create the file, I just cannot save it. I have momentarily forgotten the error message stating why. In the second instance, I have to create a user.js file inside my Firefox folder to allow cut/copy/paste functionality in order to fully utilize an internet forum. I have a Windows desktop at home and used URL...to "fix" Firefox. My laptop, however, needs to have the same capabilities and is running Ubuntu 9.04, fully updated, and Firefox 3.0.17, fully updated.
In short, I would like to know how to have complete control over functions such as "create file" EVERY time I want to. Is this a permission issue? I have only one user on the Ubuntu box. Also, how can I modify Firefox to allow for cut/copy/paste in the Mozilla Rich Text Editor?I am new to using Linux, so a minor spoonfeeding may be required.

How can I search for one 6 letter word throughout all of my Ubuntu files?
Sounds simple but I've not found what I'm looking for. The bottom line is that I am wanting to clean up a file association in mime. I would have had more success if I were searching for this under XP. I must be doing something wrong.
Since I trialled a commercial company's map product under Wine somewhere in my system is still their name. Any gpx file I choose to download and the company's name appears in properties. Ggx files are also associated with Wine whilst an untainted PC in the house just has "Browse" as an "open with" option.
First things first, how do I find and delete this commercial company's name totally from any part of my system? How do I find their name in one or more of my files?

How do I use "chmod" command so that it allows me to write a file inside a certain directory ? This directory has permissions in the formdrwxr-xr-xOnce I try to write a file there, it says "Permission denied" ! Don't advise to use "sudo", since the file is created by some executable program compiled from a source code. If I was creating the file myself, I wouldn't have gone to this forum.

I clicked in the VMware window, and tried pressing Ctrl+G etc, but to no avail. Anyone else encountered this issue?

I got Apache and php5. I was able to insert php scripts from tutorial and see the results in Mozilla browser. But now something happened and Apache seems to ignore php script. I don't remember what i had done to my system that might have caused this problem, but most likely it is moving partitions in partition aditor, as this was the most serious thing I had undertaken.
