Ubuntu Installation :: Setup Is Not Detecting The Partitions?

Nov 12, 2010

I bought the new harddisk so was doing a fresh install of ubuntu (Already installed win7)

But ubuntu setup is not detecting the partitions correctly it is showing 4 partitions but I have 5 (and +1 which is created by win7 of 100mb for system usage)

Setup is showing total 4 partitions and clubing all the partitions together and showing as 785gb and one partition is not detected at all and the other 3 partitions only one is correct 100mb win7 system usage partition.

I have 4 partitions ntfs and 1 partitions exFat, I had created exFat hoping ubuntu setup will detect it as different partition but that is not shown in partitions selection menu.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Setup Process Not Detecting Hard Drives?

Apr 30, 2010

I'm trying to make a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my system. I have 9.10 correctly setup on what I see here as devsda2. devsda3 does contain /home. devsda1 is for Vista. They are on a 500Gb hard drive. I also have a second 500Gb hard drive, formerly on a raid 0 with the first one, but now independent (raid deactivated from bios). It is here know as /dev/sdb, and contains other 3 partitions. Raid 0 is not hardware, but is an intel fake raid.

I then have other 4 drives, causing me NO problem.

I start live mode of Ubuntu 10.04 with noraid option. When I try to setup Ubuntu, during the process, where it comes to manually select partitions, the two 500Gb hard drives disappears, such that I'm not able to install Ubuntu on what now is /dev/sda2

If I start live mode of Ubuntu without noraid option, I will see the two 500Gb hd as being part of a raid 0, such that I can't use them.

The other 4 hd normally appear in both cases.

Ubuntu Installation :: XP With Existing Setup (Partitions) - Error "Setup Did Not Find Any Hard Disks Installed On Your Computer"

Feb 18, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and previously had a separate partition with another distro on it. I decided to delete the other distro's home and swap partitions and install XP in place of it. I've been following these instructions: [URL] and [URL] I have gotten to the point where I am booting to the XP CD and want to install it, but I get the message, "Setup did not find any hard disks installed on your computer" when I should be getting to the screen that asks me to select a partition to install XP on. This is what my HDD looks like in GParted:

I want to install XP in the unallocated partition, but I have a feeling I screwed up somewhere along the way and probably don't fully understand the whole thing. Even if I try to format the unallocated partition to NTFS I can't make it a primary partition (I assume because it's within sda2). The very last thing I want to do is delete my Ubuntu partition and start from scratch, but if that's my last option let me know.

Ubuntu :: Grub Not Detecting Partitions Correctly?

Jul 18, 2010

I've been running ubuntu 9.10 until this week without any problems. I've just done an in-place update to 10.04 and now cannot boot my windows XP partition.

looking at grub.cfg it appears to be referring to sdb1 as the XP partition whereas the disk utility says the correct partition is sdb5.

sdb1 is a data partition formatted ntfs but not bootable.

When I choose XP from the grub menu all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top, which would suggest it is trying to boot the data partition.

I've tried update-grub and also startupmanager and it makes no difference. I would just try to edit grub.cfg but the next update would presumably wipe out my changes.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Edit Partitions During Setup

Jan 24, 2010

I can't edit the partitions in the install setup: I see a hard disk (sda) with no partitions or user devices, and 2 RAID devices. The behavior of OpenSuse 11.2 x64 installation is much alike.I have googled with every keyword combination I remembered, but I can't find anything that gives me a clue to what may be happening.I have already tried the 3 SATA configurations (the IDE that works with the installed Win 7, AHCI and RAID), but the result is always the same. Now the strangest thing is that in OpenSuse, fdisk and parted correctly identify the partitions. As far as I remember, parted isn't able to do modifications and fdisk says that the boundaries of the first, tiny partition, doesn't match the number of cylinders (or something like it). However, I was able create a partition with fdisk on the empty space and format it, delete it again and repeat the process a couple of times with no errors. The partituions are signed as msdos.

GParted from Ubuntu also shows the partitions, but I didn't try to do any modifications, namely because I don't think that it can solve my problem and I don't want to risk installing windows again. The hardware is brand new, a Asus M4A785Td-V Evo with an Amd Phenom II X4 965 and a WDC-WD5000ACCS-0 500 Gb HD. My lazyness made me asking the guys from whom I bought it to install Win7 Ultimate 64 in a NTFS partition, leaving half the disk untouched. They assure me that it is a "plain vanilla" ("next, next, next" installation . I guess I could try to see if I could do the partition setup in the "RAID" part of the Expert partitioner, but I have strong doubts that it solves the problem and it would be quite boring to conclude that I ruined the windows installation for nothing.Could it be any awkward problem specific of the motherboard / SATA controller or its drivers?

Fedora Hardware :: Detecting NTFS Partitions In 13?

Dec 3, 2010

My computer has 2 O.S.- WindowsXP and Fedora13, and also two 500GB Hard Disks. For HD1 Partition1 is NTFS, a few FAT partitions and last one is Fedora13. HD2 has 2 NTFS of equal size. Fedora13 always showed NTFS partitions on HD1 as 30GB HD, FAT partitions correctly and HD2 as a single 500GB HD with the contents of 1st partition of this HD i.e. contents of 2nd partition of HD2 were never shown in Fedora13. XP showed everything correctly. Recently XP is becoming hung on start up as 2nd HD is connected. But Fedora is showing as previousPl. suggest me the solution as I have a lot data on the 2nd partition of HD 2.

Installation :: Setup The NAND Partitions For S3c6410?

Oct 20, 2010

I am trying to use the Idea6410 board for developing SPI applications.Unfortunately, the software was built using the s3c2410 SPI Drivers instead of the s3c6410 SPI drivers using linux_2.6.24. The problem is that this version doesn't contain a s3c6410 version of spidev. So I built a new kernel using linux-2.6.36-rc8. However, the arch/arm/plat-samsung directory does not contain equivalent methods of setting up NAND partitions. The /arch/arm/plat-s3c24xx/common-smdk.c file contains the following code, apparently an old method, to setup NAND partitions:

Code: struct mtd_partition s3c_partition_info[] = {

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Won't Recognize Partitions - Error Message Saying Partitions Over Sized

I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Ubuntu Installation :: CD Doesn't Detect Partitions But No Apparent Overlapping Partitions?

Mar 3, 2010

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago. After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

Code:

sudo fdisk -lu
sudo sfdisk -d
sudo parted /dev/sda print

and have received the following output:

Code:

ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -lu
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes

Ubuntu Installation :: Order Of Partitions For Root / Home And Swap With Respect To Windows Partitions?

Feb 9, 2011

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Edit Partitions During Setup (11.2 X64)?

I can't edit the partitions in the install setup. Obviously I can't install to it if I can't select it from the drop down menu. Not that it really matters, but this happens with both 64 and 32 bit versions, clean disc, no errors. I've also tried xubuntu 32-bit.

I can install Slackware on it, or for all I know every other OS. I can find it with cfdisk, fdisk, gparted, etc. I can format it in windows and use it as a drive If I try to install ubuntu from windows on it once I boot into ubuntu to finish the install it goes in an infinite loop of something like 'no root filesystem please reconfigure (or something like that), hit ok, repeates the message until I get tired of hitting ok and reboot. Always lists it under places as '500gb filesystem' even if there are no assigned partitions on it. I've rebuilt the partition table with fdisk analyzed it with disktest (drivetest? something test or testsomething) I've considered giving up and using another distro...

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Not Detecting Windows 7 Partition?

Apr 30, 2011

After putting this off forever, I've finally decided to delete my old XP OS and install Ubuntu on it as a dualboot option along with my existing Windows 7 x64 install. However, I'm having a common issue in that both Gparted and fdisk do not detect the partitions of my main boot disk and shows the entire disk as unallocated. I've read a number of similar threads with some great responses from many of the folks here on this forum. I've put together all the info I could think would be relevant.

1) I ran fdisk -l. Here is the output (This is from booting from the live CD). Sorry for the long logfile. I have a number of disks/partitions attached. The relevant disk of interest is /dev/sdb/

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install gdisk
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package gdisk
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

[Code]...

/dev/sdb contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that does not understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos paritions table. Invalid argument during seek for read on /dev/sdb

3) And this is a picture of the disk unders Windows 7 Disk Management. "Disk 3" is my main boot drive with Windows 7 on C:. The unallocated partition before it was where the old XP install was. I want to ideally install Ubuntu on that partition. Also, I should mention that "Disk 0" is a Drive from my old DELL PC that has a windows XP installation on it along with the boot info. I left it in there in case I wanted to swap it back into my old PC. However, it seems to confuse Ubuntu during the install as it detects only that XP installation but cannot read/detect the current Windows 7 install.

Debian Installation :: Installing Stretch Stops At Detecting Network Devices

Oct 11, 2015

Installing stretch stops at detecting network devices. This is an attempt to install stretch over the top of Windows 10 on a Toshiba Radius 15 with 2 each USB2 ports and 2 each USB3 ports, and no RJ-45. Its wireless is based upon the Intel 7265. Just before the presentation of the wireless list, the system reports the need to install non-free:

iwlwifi-7265D-9
iwlwifi-7265D-10
iwlwifi-7265D-11
iwlwifi-7265D-12

and asks for media. Whether I respond yes or no, the driver selection screen comes up. [I have not been able to find those four specific files on the Internet. The network card screen comes up, I select the Intel recommended firmware iwlsifi, but the page just recreates itself and waits for a new selection. If I select either 'none' or 'not listed', the installation fails saying there is no network card.I have obtained from Intel their suggestion as of Aug 2015: iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.14.0.tgz.I placed this on a USB stick in a subdirectory labeled 'firmware'. This was built from Windows 7 on a FAT32 file system.

There is also a Dynadock docking station that connects to the Toshiba via a USB3 cable. Besides video, USB,and audio, this has an Ethernet port. I have tried this connected to the laptop but it also requires a driver. I have placed that driver on the firmware directory of the USB also.

Are the four files listed above somehow inside the iwlwifi driver tgz?Is there a way to get the docking station drive to load so I can use its Ethernet port?

I have used Rufus to build the stretch USB from Windows. I do have a a Linux box I built with the same USB. I would use it but so far, I only have a command line on it and I have not figured out how to access debian.org to download the installation files nor how to put that on the stick.
