Ubuntu :: GRUB - Cant Boot - Showing Old Version - Restored In Startup Settings (oops)?

I had a minor problem with my ubuntu install, and a person said to go to startup manager and select reset to original settings. I did this and when I restarted It asked me to boot ubuntu 9.10, which would not work as I upgraded long ago. Now all I get is the option to boot 9.10, and I really want to get back into my computer. Running ubuntu 10.04 with latest updates as if 25 september New Zealand Time.
I have a National Instruments gpib interface PCI card on my machine. It has been working up till now.The computer was moved when I was gone, and now at start up I get two alarm beeps from the motherboard speaker, no grub menu (hidden line is commented out and time out is gtr than 0).In the past I had to lock the kernel to 2.6.32-28.55.newer kernels broke the interface...although prolly foolioshly, I did allow other system updates.
I've been running openSuse 11.2 for a while on my notebook.Today I turned it off at work and came home. When I tried to turn it on, it boots, shows a black screen written 'GRUB' and then NOTHING. It doesn't complete the boot process.
I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old Dell server (Pentium 4). It works fine, except that it somehow includes an extra startup step, in which I have to choose between two different grub versions. Here is the screen I get:

Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting, 'a' to modify the kernal arguments before booting, or 'c' for a command-line. I always select "Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14. i686)" because I presume it is the latest version. Is there anything I can do to automate the choice of "Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14. i686)" and avoid this extra step? On another subject, I have already modified the custom.conf file to eliminate the login screen step.
I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?
I am working with a acer netbook that I originally had WinXP installed on. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10, transferred the iso contents to a bootable USB drive and installed Ubuntu. I remember during the setup process that I made sure I chose the option to install on one partition. There is only one partition on my netbook with a small second partition as a swap.
After the installation process and reboot I noticed the grub menu would pop up every boot up giving the list of operating systems of which XP was included. I then ran the update manager and updated 9.10 with all updates. After rebooting the grub menu again showed but the option to choose XP was now gone.
Now everytime I boot up the grub menu shows. How can I modify grub so it will automatically just boot to the OS.
Since the Clonezilla mailing list doesn't seem very active, I figured I should ask in a Linux forum to see if someone else has experienced this issue and knows if something can be done. On a test host, using the PartedMagic live CD, I created two partitions: One to hold an OS I wish to use for testing (/sda1), and a second partition to hold images (/sda2). Unless I overlooked it, when saving /sda1 into an image file in /sda2 (ie. /dev/partimage), I was not prompted whether to include the MBR.
After trying out Windows7, I used Clonezilla to restore an XPSP3 image, and GParted to set /sda1 as Boot (ie. active, I guess). FWIW, Gparted tells me that /sda1 starts at Sector 63. When rebooting the PC, the screen remains blank, with no error message. Could it be that Clonezilla didn't save/restore the MBR? Does it mean that the images I made so far are all unusable? :-/
I'm trying to create test system on which I can load saved images of a number of different distributions / versions from saved images. I'm using Acronis in Windows to manage the partitions and the images. This works fine for a while but every now and then I do something (typically install a new distro / version) and subsequent restores of the previously working images fail. After restoring the image I get a "grub rescue" prompt and thereafter I'm stuck. Typical advice in this situation seems to revolve around repairing the installation using a bootable dvd, but that's not really relevant in my case - I'm trying to find a way to reliably load these images. My configuration is
HD 1 Partition 1 -> Windows 15GB used to manage the system with Acronis. Partition 2 -> 20GB partition, used to mount linux ext3/4 image (or other operating systems) Partition 3 -> 20GB partition, used to mount linux swap partition remainder unformatted HD2 1 big partition to hold saved images
When ever I install an image I mount "/" and swap on partition 1 and 2. Whenever I save an image I save the MBR of HD1 and partitions 2 and 3 and of course the reverse to recover. So yesterday I recovered my Ubuntu 10.10 image and booted (selecting the OS in Acronis OS selector (boot manager)) which then shows me GRUB and then boots Linux. I then performed an Ubuntu upgrade to 11.4 and saved the image as usual. I then restored the 10.10 image and where I would normally see the grub menu I get "grub rescue>". So clearly the upgrade has messed with something grub related, but my question is where? It can't be in the MBR of HD1 or either of the partitions 2 / 3 as these get restored. Can anyone shed some light on what I might be doing wrong, or at least explain where these grub files actually are? I have always assumed that anything grub related is in my active partition (with the MBR "pointing to" this), clearly this is not correct.
After shutting down linux the first time on suse 11.2 the grub loader won't show me the option to boot windows. I tried using wine and dosemulator to get to windows and it doesn't work because I don't know the file name to open windows.
Their are certain programs that I can only run in windows and I need windows open to install them.
I installed Windows 7 and then Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. The Ubuntu installation went fine but when rebooting a "check disk" appeared and since then my PC keeps booting directly on Windows. I tried all the GRUB reinstallation methods of the GRUB2 Community Documentation with the live CD but none worked.

When I first boot up. I get the GRUB command line. What happened to the boot menu? And I can boot up into my Windows partition just fine. But when I try the other partitions i get "Unknown file system" or when I try to boot into the other ntfs drive, I get "BOOTMBR missing", but yet it does not mean Windows, because i can boot that just fine. I can't find my Ubuntu partition. How can I get the GRUB boot menu back?
After installation of windows 7 installed debian 8.3. But in grub menu no boot option showing to windows.There ar only two option 1.)to boot in debian and 2.)advanc option for debian ONLY!!
I just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04. When I reboot, it stops at a "grub>" prompt. I figured out that I can continue booting by entering these four commants:
set root=(hd0,1) linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic-pae root=/dev/sda1 ro initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic-pae boot
I can't figure out, however, how to save these as the default so that the machine can boot without someone present to enter these commands. Running "grub-set-default" tells me "entry not specified." I don't see anywhere in /etc/default/grub that looks relevant.
I am currently doing a tri-boot (using refit) with Linux, Windows, and OS X. I was wondering if it was possible to change up the boot loader for Linux. I basically wanted grub to not pop-up and just boot the default version of Ubuntu. Also the boot loader comes up with the options to boot Windows and OS X and I was wondering if it would be possible to remove those from the list as well?
I have XP and Ubuntu on my computer and both seemed to be working fine but now when I try to load into Ubuntu I get

Is there some workaround by changing grub settings other than rewiring the hard disks or changing in bios.. 1. my bios is getting reset (low battery) 2. my hard disks are sata and ide, so the ide one is loaded as hd1 by default, cudn't find any way to change that..
I am a new Ubuntu user, and I am attempting to set Windows 7 64 bit as my default OS in the boot loader instead of Ubuntu 10.10. I have entered the command gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst into terminal, and the menu.lst file does open. However, this file appears to be completely blank, which does not seem to make sense and is preventing me from changing the boot order.
I'm having an issue with GRUB, I have four OSes on my hard drive. Here they are in the order I installed them:
Windows 7 (Windows bootloader) Ubuntu (GRUB 1.97) YLMF OS (GRUB 2) Debian (Some ancient bootloader)
(For those of you unfamiliar with it, YLMF OS is an Ubuntu-based distro re-skinned to look like Windows XP. Other than the theme and branding it's exactly the same as Ubuntu) Each time I installed another operating system, it replaced my original bootloader with its own. I made the mistake of installing Debian last, thus leaving me "stranded" with an old version of GRUB. Since at the time I was relatively inexperienced with Linux, I solved the problem by reinstalling Ubuntu, which then replaced the bootloader with GRUB 1.97.
I mainly use YLMF OS, and so when I wanted to change some GRUB menu settings (the default entry, timeout, etc.) I naturally changed the /etc/default/grub file in the YLMF OS partition, not the one in Ubuntu. Once I rebooted I realized that my changes weren't being applied for that reason. Thus my problem is that my computer is using the GRUB that Ubuntu installed, not the one YLMF OS came with. How do I change which version of GRUB is used when I boot up? Yes, I could just change the settings in the Ubuntu partition, but YLMF OS came with the newer/est version of GRUB, so I want to use that instead.
On my PC, I use GRUB to manage my dual-boot startup on my PC. Every time I update my Linux, It adds another 2 startup options on my HD for every distro I have. (The Normal and Recovery modes for the new version.) I would like to add the VortexBox distro someday.
Is there a way for me to get rid of the older versions of Linux distro's on my GRUB menu so I just see the newest? I have 6 options for Ubuntu 10.10 and 4 options for UGE 2.8..
I don't know why its called "GRUB 2" while it is actually GRUB 1.98 or 1.99. Anyway.So here's the thing. Due to the fact that I am dual-booting Ubuntu + Windows XP, my GRUB menu would show up during boot with or without me holding down SHIFT. This takes several seconds. What I'd like to do is that GRUB does not show up at all during "normal" boot and only shows up when I hold down the SHIFT right after BIOS POST.
I have a laptop with Karmic Koala in dual boot with Lenny. I need to reinstall Lenny however if I do that I will loose Karmic Koala in the grub screen because of the new version of grub that comes with Karmic Koala. Which means that I will need to reinstall Karmic Koala after Lenny so that they both appear in the grub screen at startup. If I reinstall only Lenny is it possible to use Gparted to change the boot back to Karmic Koala and have them both in the grub screen again? Or is there another way around it?
I have installed a new Linux distro (just to test it) on my usb memory stick, and I'm trying to run it. I don't know if what I did is correct so far, anyways here's what I have:
Grub on sda (internal hard disk) sdb with no boot loader (memory stick)
In grub I've been doing: root (hd1,0) kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.37-sabayon root=/dev/sdb1 vga=normal initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.37-sabayon boot
This seems to work (as opposed to when I forgot the root= parameter, which almost destroyed my linux on sda1 ), but during startup the system complains about no root bein found on /dev/sdb1. I also tried (hd1,0), but it didn't change much.
I'm sure I can boot an OS from usb on my computer, so doesn anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.
A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu Security and Recommended Updates that included an update to Linux Kernel 2.6.31-20. Upon installing these updates I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. So I rebooted and encountered a Hyper Transport Sync Flood error each time I tried to boot, preventing me from booting into the OS.The above linked forum thread about the error suggested I manually adjust voltage settings in the BIOS to resolve the issue, so I gave it a try to no avail. Then I decided I would just reset my BIOS settings to the defaults (seeing as I hadn't edited that many settings to begin with). After doing so, I tried booting only to encounter a black screen with "GRUB _" printed on it.
I have encountered this issue before when I initially installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system, but I'm not sure whether this occurrence is strictly BIOS setting related or if something effected my bootloader. (On a side note, resetting my BIOS settings to defaults seemed to, at least for now, eliminate the Hyper Transport Sync Flood error I was getting...and instead leave me with another problem.)I used this script created by meierfra. to provide info on my current boot setup, the results of which are displayed below.

I'm trying to install a more up to date version of vlc and to do this I have added the "lucid bleed" ppa. However when I do apt-get update && upgrade or aptitude, or view available versions from synaptic, I seem to be only getting the version from the repo? Expected behavior is getting the new version. Observed behavior is getting the old version.
I'm sure this is a very simple task but I don't have a lot of experience with Linux. I need to view what my display adapters settings are, specifically the refresh rate. I have found plenty on how to change the settings but not how show its current setup. I am troubleshooting an vga splitter/extender issue on a digital signage unit where the master screen syncs up but the remote screen does not, I think it has to do with H-Sync V-Sync or refresh rate.
I'm having a strange behaviour with GRUB, and I don't know much about it. The problem is that GRUB is looking at the wrong place when it starts. I have a /boot partition (/dev/sda1) with everything for booting and grub. This gets updated when I update, say, the kernel, grub, etc. But I also have a /backups partition (/dev/sda4) with a directory /backups/boot/grub that is a copy of /boot/grub. The /backups/boot directory only has the /backups/boot/grub directory, not the kernels, etc.
If I delete the /backups/boot/grub directory, I get a "grub>" console at startup, and system doesn't boot. SO: Why is grub looking at /backups/boot/grub instead of /boot/grub and how can I fix this? This is my grub.conf, identical in both directories, and both pointing to /boot=/dev/sda1=(hd0,0):
As the titles says, applications enabled under "Startup Applications" does not show up in the "Notification Area". I can see that the processes are running, like update-notifier and xchat for example, but they have now icon representing them. I don't think I've ever seen an "There are updates available"-icon since I installed 10.10.
Edit: I didn't have any pending updates, so that explains why the update-notification icon's been missing.
Edit 2: Regarding the xchat icon my guess is it's simply loading before the Notification Area applet has, any known way around this?
Well when I first installed fedora 15 my wireless internet was working fine, and then out of the blue the option to select a wireless network wont show up.
Im sorry to be one of those people who register and there first post is a question, but since fedora 15 is new I couldnt find any information on my issue.
So basically, If I go into Network Settings I have two choices in the left hand tab. Wired, and Network proxy. Yesterday I also had wireless, Since the issue I have updated everything but still have no luck.
I am having this issue on a emachine em350 netbook, I am unable to post a link to it as I get a error since im new and not allowed to post links.
We are running clamav on 9.10 (with MailScanner)... I upgrade our clam av from respiratory today and it is still showing old version.. When i do freshclam i get this: Local version: 0.95.3 Recommended version: 0.96

Is there 0.96 available from respiratory? Or i have to install it manually from .deb package?
