Hardware :: Numeric Keypad Do Not Work
Jul 11, 2011After changing the keyboard the numeric keys do not work using mandriva 2010.2. It works ok on windows xp and puppy linux.
Under puppy linux the setting is pc 101.
Mandriva the setting is Generic 105 key (intl) PC
Have tried a few different options.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Doesn't Work On Computer?
Jun 1, 2010Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't seem to work on my computer. When I install it (tried both CD, DVD and USB-stick) all I see is "Ubuntu" with a number of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black.I also tried the alternative ISO (with non-graphical interface), and that installation worked; I could partition the HD, enter username and password and it copied all files to the HD. But when it said it was finnished, and I rebooted the computer (without the installation media) "Ubuntu" shows on screen with a nuber of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black.The computer is new, has an i5-750 CPU, 4GB RAM and a XFX Radeon 5670 1GB graphics adapter and two identical HD:s, one with a working Windows 7 installation (disconnected when I try installing Ubuntu).

Oct 11, 2010Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 using standard Update Manager procedure. Now themes don't work. When I change the theme, the window decorations change accordingly, but the contents of the windows (controls, panels) are in the raw X look (I don't know how else to put it) and do not change regardless of theme selection. I've tried customizing the theme and selecting something different on the "Controls" tab, but it doesn't work.
X is working properly with Nvidia driver, Compiz is working properly as well. Killing Compiz didn't help with the theme problem.I used 64-bit Lucid, so I guess it upgraded to 64-bit Maverick.
Ubuntu Installation :: Stop Promoting U9.10 It Doesn't Work / Fix It?
Feb 24, 2010Every time I've tried to install 9.10, it will not run. I get "Grub - " and it just hangs there. I shouldn't have to deal with that. Why can't I just have a happy install like usual? 9.10 / Grub2 is not stable and it needs fixing. Grub2 sucks. It's in beta and no-one tells you that unless you do some looking. I've tried to fix it, can't. Linux really sucks for me right now.

I installed from Ubuntu Karmic minimal, so i did install KDE.
i have update-manager-kde, update-notifier-kde and kpackage kit installed. for manual installing i use synaptic though.
in the repositry-manager the automatic updates are anabled (daily).
but it is not checking for updates. i checked manually in synaptic, and there are updates available.
so, how do i let it check automaticly for updates?
Ubuntu Installation :: Enigmail Doesn't Work With SeaMonkey?
May 19, 2010I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on a laptop for my parents. They use SeaMonkey with Enigmail for their e-mail. They complained that they couldn't read their e-mail.
I did apt-get install enigmail.
Here are the versions that are installed:
enigmail 2:0.95.7-1ubuntu2
seamonkey 1.1.17+nobinonly-0ubuntu1
Unfortunately, enigmail didn't show up in SeaMonkey. I looked at the files it installed. It looks like it only points Thunderbird at enigmail, but not SeaMonkey.
How do I get enigmail to work with SeaMonkey? Is there another package I can install? Or do I have to manually move around the files?

Jun 13, 2010I installed Ubuntu 10.04 with WUBI. In the setup wizard in windows, I selected the D partition to install Ubuntu on. It extracted the files, and after a reboot, and selecting Ubuntu, the Ubuntu setup wizzard appeared. After it was done, it rebooted. I selected Ubuntu, and this appeared on my screen:

Jun 28, 2010I found it is impossible to format partition during Ubuntu 10.04 installation.
My storage configuration is as following. 1TB (500GB X 2) AHCI RAID 0 (it is said fake raid) and covers below 4 partitions.

Partition 2 is swap partition and root partition is ext3 original.
Since there is no enough space for upgrading, I try to format root partition and install a complete pure new OS. After I booting up system from Live or Alternative disk, I try to switch root partition from file system ext3 to ext4 and format it. However, Formating process always get failed after couple trying. Even I quit installation and use tools "Disk Utility" to check and adjust partition information. It reports device is busy.
Ubuntu Installation :: Asterisk Reinstall Doesn't Work
Jul 8, 2010I first installed asterisk using sudo apt-get install asterisk on ubuntu 10.04. After doing this the SIP packages did not install for some odd reason.I uninstalled asterisk using sudo apt-get remove asterisk then reinstalled and now none of the asterisk config files are gone. deleted all files and directories I could find relating to asterisk, rebooted the machine, did a kernal upgrade, and a package update and reinstalled asterisk using sudo apt-get install asterisk, and all the config files are still missing. What am I missing here!

Aug 23, 2010The announcement of several new make scripts in the 2.6.32 release notes is very exciting.Most people uses the kernel shipped by distros - and that's good. But some people like to compile their own kernels from kernel.org, or maybe they like following the Linux development and want to try it. Configuring your own kernel, however, has become a very difficult and tedious task - there're too many options, and some times userspace software will stop working if you don't enable some key option. You can use a standard distro .config file, but it takes too many time to compile all the options it enables.
To make easier the process of configuration, a new build target has been added: make localmodconfig. It runs "lsmod" to find all the modules loaded on the current running system. It will read all the Makefiles to map which CONFIG enables a module. It will read the Kconfig files to find the dependencies and selects that may be needed to support a CONFIG. Finally, it reads the .config file and removes any module "=m" that is not needed to enable the currently loaded modules. With this tool, you can strip a distro .config of all the unuseful drivers that are not needed in our machine, and it will take much less time to build the kernel. There's an additional "make localyesconfig" target, in case you don't want to use modules and/or initrds.

After booting from it, I saw the progress dots running on the start screen running for ever (30 minutes until I switched off my Laptop). The whole time the in-use LED of my Harddrive was on. Keyboard works fine at power on. I can edit BIOS options. I put in the CD or DVD, it starts fine. Keyboard works for selecting boot options. Once the installation begins however, no more keyboard...
This is true across every version and distribution of Linux I have come across- I have dozens of liveCDs -EXCEPT Linux Mint 8.

I get that a grub. I'm not even sure if ubuntu can even boot because my monitor won't let me see anything. I'm using the driver off the nvidia website, not the stock one that came with ubuntu.

Jun 2, 2010I'm trying to install Debian 5.0x to my miniITX computer.
Setup:
I had this setup running in a previous configuration. The only difference were the disks. I had a 120GB and a 1TB (/home). Because I need more space I swapped both disks for 2 x 2TB.
I tried a 64bit Debian 5.xx stable install. Everything goes fine until the first boot. After the POST and BIOS screen a cursor justs blinks and the computer does nothing. the computer doesn't start GRUB
Well I thought maybe a small error with downloading the DVD so I tried another debian but Testing now. There the setup hangs when it wants to make the file-systems. It says something like can't make ext4 filesystem. I also tried with ext3. So I manually tried to do fdisk and mkfs.ext4 (and mkfs.ext3) for both disks in the console during installation. fdisk works but when I try mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1 it says that some bin-file is missing? How's that possible on an installation disc? Never ever had that before?
Well after 15 attempts (meanwhile lost 2kg of fingernails)I tried another 32 bit DVD install of Debian 5.xx. It can make the filesystems again and install everything but when it has to boot for the first time it just doesn't. I don't even see GRUB.
Seems to me that the computer doesn't refer to the HD to boot. In the BIOS the BOOT order is just fine (the previous config with the old HD's just worked fine). Even when I put in the install DVD it skips the HD and boots from the DVD?
I really don't get it. The disks are both shown in the BIOS. Is this a hardware or software issue? I think that Linux or GRUB should be able to work with 2TB discs isn't it?

Feb 8, 2010This weekend I did a distribution upgrade to Karmic, but it didn't go very well. Upon reboot, I see a white ubuntu logo on a black screen. I hear the speakers pop, and the screen flashes several times, sorta like the blank screen is maybe changing video modes. After a while I see what I think is garbled text but is unreadable, and it looks like I can log on even though I can't read anything. Now, booting into recovery mode gets me to a readable prompt. There are no upgrades to apply. Typing gdm from here gets me to the desktop just fine. Also when booting, if I choose an earlier kernel the system boots fine also, except the touchpad doesn't work.

But 10.04 crashes in laptop ASUS X50GL with processor Intel Core 2 Duo T5800.In fresh installation, it hangs always, in ANY 10.04 version, beta or stable, 32 or 64 bit, also from iso image in CD or in usb stick,I have tried all possibilities!Therefore, clever enough, I though let's do it in an indirect way: let's install the 8.04 distro (it works) and later on I will upgrade to 10.04. So I just did.Everything was fine (also the upgrade, without a single warning) until final reboot after upgrade to 10.04.hanged at boot!. There is incompatibility between 10.04 and this firmware, clearly. Unfortunately, 10.04 is not yet stable, I guess.I took a picture of the screen which I attach.

May 7, 2010Ive been having some troubles with wireless. Ethernet works but wirless (at first) doesn't work. However, when i plug the ethernet in, all the wireless networks it detects are populated and i can then connect until i shutdown my computer.My disable internet button on my computer also doesn't seem to work well. It is always blue, and when i press it and have internet connection estabsliehd, it erratically turns from blue to orange to blue and then stays on blue.
When i have shutdown and booted up and i haven't placed ethernet in (so wireless doesn't work) it wont even change color.Any solutions? I dont know what info to include so just let me know and when the wireless does it work, it is slow in opening a new tab and connecting to google.

When I try to install anything it tells me to check my internet connetction which i know works just fine, it says that cannot connect to [my_ip]:8080 and I manually opened the port and nothing, i disabled the firewall and have no proxy running, it also gives me the info that connection(111:refused) What do I do?

I've used Windows all my life and I just made the jump to Ubuntu a couple days ago, install native drivers for my card, but at the end of the list of like 25 packages there are 4 packages that won't install because they all say they have dependencies upon each other. Now, I'm trying ndiswrapper and I don't understand it in the least little bit... I know I'm an utter noob, but the OS seems amazing, I'd just like to connect to the internet with it. Even the ethernet port doesn't work! :/
