Ubuntu Installation :: Replace Fedora With 10.10?

i ve installed fedora 14 a few days ago, but i m not at all happy with it. i also have on the same disk, a windows xp partition, and another disk with data. i am a newbie, so i wanna know if there is a guide, or tutorial, or some guidelines if possible, on how to replace fedora with ubuntu 10.10. i ve tried to initiate the installation, but i only got the options to use free space, or erase entire disk. well, to be honest, there is a third option, prompting me to manually decide the partitions, but i know nothing about it.

I want to replace the Ubuntu with Fedora in my laptop(model:hp EliteBook 8540W). After I opened the machine, the status is as follows:

I have some questions about installation:
1) How to partition space for Fedora? (this space is 128GB occupied by Ubuntu currently). Maybe I cannot use Gparted to partition. Will it influence windows system after partition? (because the windows loader is on /dev/sda1)
2) Do I need replace Ubuntu's grub2 bootloader with installing Fedora's grub? How to do?
3) Can you introduce me all the steps in detailed before installation? Because I can not

I am using Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.4 side by side But i want to replace ubuntu with fedora i have a 64 bit machine I have downloaded fedora 14 iso image. My pc does not boots from a usb and I do not have a cd rom. I want to replace ubuntu with fedora with removing or disturbing my windows.

I had Windows 7 RC installed and F10 on the same machine. HP 6730s Intel Dual Core. Everything was working fine and I don't remember doing anything special when installing Fedora 10. I decided to install F11 from DVD, installation went fine but after rebooting all I get is "non-system disk error or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready". I couldn't find any relevant post in this forum and googling I found that this could be a disk starting to fail but I don't thing this is the case here. I'm trying to reinstall just now, I chose to install grub at /dev/sda (default), should it be /dev/sda1 ?

I had some problems with ububtu because it doesn't work very well with Intel cards. Anyway I've downloaded Fedora 11 and Now i am using it without installation. I'd like to install it over ubuntu I have to choose this option right ? "replace existing using system"?

I had Fedora 14 (x86) and Windows XP with Grub Legacy (Grub) for dual boot in my desktop.
I installed Debian and Grub 2 replaced Grub in the MBR.
Must I reinstall F14 to recover Grub as bootloader or is there another lighter way to do it?

I have vista and ubuntu 10.04 LTS loaded on my disk. i upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 LTS from the earlier version, after that i started using MTS Mblaze usb broadband stick as wired connections were not available. In order to get my usb stick working i messed up the ubuntu settings and now even wired connections are not working. i am frustrated and would like to replace it with 10.10 as it has MTS Mblaze default settings. In any case i never like the look and feel of 10.04 as compared to earlier versions. I have made the bootable CD for 10.10, but now how do i go about installation so as to replace 10.04. I do not want to disturb my vista as there is lot of crucial data.

Posting this thread using the DEMO variant of 10.04, congrats to the developers that it didn't fail like that of 9.10 for all those who have configured their Modems & Routers to work in 'Bridge Mode'!
Here's my concern:::
I wish to immediately replace my 12GB partition, currently kept aside for 9.04 with 10.04.How to accomplish the same? Installation screen does comes up with 'Manual' preference, but it is confusing & am unable to make any decision owing to great excitement!?

I wanna install GRUB-1.98 in my UBUNTU9.10, you know 9.10 comes included with GRUB 1.97 beta... but I wanna do a grub-mkpasswd-pbkdf2 and I can't. Due it I want to install GRUB 1.98. Well, the case is I already installed GRUB1.98 and I could do grub-mkpasswd-pbkdf2 but it doesn't work. Cuz when I'm gonna enter WITH "E" just appear a screen when I can write but my login user and my pass doesnt appear..!

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system. At the time I wasn't very familiar with boot loaders and I just left everything default at installation. Now I have the following setup on the hard drive:
- MBR: GNU GRUB
- Partition 1 (dev/sda1) Sony Vaio Recovery Partition
- Partition 2 (dev/sda2) Windows XP Home Edition
- Partition 3 (dev/sda3) Extended Partition
- (dev/sda5) Ubuntu 9.10
- (dev/sda6) Swap Space
I want to replace GNU GRUB in the MBR with NTLDR and add Linux to the NTLDR boot menu but from what I understand I have to install GNU GRUB to the Linux Partition first so NTLDR can chain load it to boot Ubuntu. I have heard of using the ' grub-install ' command in which from what I understand I should use it like this ' grub-install /dev/sda5 ' but I'm not sure.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to install DirectFB 1.4.3. I can do it with no problems by downloading the sources from the directfb website and installing it by hand. but I can't replace the 1.2 stable version that is in the apt-get tree. Is it possible to do it?

I did post a thread yesterday saying a problem I had with installation but now I know what REALLY happened. My hard drive is destroyed lol I think whenever I try to install 11.4 it says "disk failure is imminent". So maybe I was wondering if it is possible to install Ubuntu on a 4gb USB flash drive and use that as my hard drive? If not a USB then maybe an external CD drive (I am on a netbook and I dont mind having a USB inside all the time) So yeah if its possible then thats great I would like to know how.
But if its not possible, or maybe it is but a bit harder I just want to know what I can do because my laptop is currently useless and I dont wanna go back to Windows coz it died on me several times already. Or maybe I can try a different version of Ubuntu?? Also someone might suggest just keeping it in "try Ubuntu" but th internet drivers arent there and I need to restart pc to get it but I cant restart without being fully installed

i have a windows xp desktop machine that i've been using as a fileserver throguh sharing my 4 external usb drives attached to it. I want to replace this sytem with ubuntu (unless theres a different alternative for waht i want to do?). the problem is its not a standard install i can just do.
- first, the desktop has no keyboard mouse or monitor connected and i generally used vnc to control it.
- the computer right now is heavily infected with some kind of virus. disabld all my anti virus software, wont allow me to use new ones, etc.
my only option really is to wipe it clean and this time not xp, i want ubuntu. is there a way to configure an ubuntu install (or find a preconfigured install) to basically boot automatically from cd/usb drive when i restart my computer, do the install with no user intervention, and upon finalization install a vnc server on the install so i can get back in.
please remember this is my first time wiht ubuntu and while i know more than your average user about computers, id ratehr not muck around. i jsut want to be able to download a standard install, put a file on the installation cd or usb drive and let it install itself.another note, 4 of my external drives connected via usb are ntfs, and 1 is hfs. can ubuntu read/write to all of these systems? if not out of the box, can i later enable these filesystems somehow?

I have a rather odd problem. Ubuntu 11.04 came installed with the nvidia 173 drivers, which I replaced with the current ones. Neither loaded Unity, so I downloaded Nvidia's 270.41.06 drivers from their website. Still no unity.
If I run compiz --replace, however, compiz works fine, and Unity loads, albeit extremely buggy, most likely because all of the gnome components are still running (e.g., if I click anywhere on the top panel, it goes away).

I have 10.04 LTS installed onto an SSD and have a spinning disk for crud, and my brother wants to give me his old GA-PH67A-UD3 and 8GB of RAM if I buy an i7 2600 to put in it. The thing is, I'm happy with my GA-965P-DS3 with Q6600, so I don't actually need an upgrade. So, can I get away with replacing the mobo, chip, and RAM and putting the SSD in the equivalent SATA port on the new mobo (/dev/sda), and will it cope? Will the kernel detect a new board and chip and carry on accordingly? I'll have to remount my crud drive to the same mount point it expects, and if my user account as the same UID as the old system, I'm hoping that might cope, too. Of course, I might be suggesting complete evil, and if this was Windows, I wouldn't even dare think about it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Linux might cope with this kind of change where Windows would fall over in a heap.

I'm trying to do a simple install. Wipe out existing system and replace with 11.04 but I can't get past initial screen. Is there a different CD version I need to use? Last year I used 10.04 LTS and it worked fine, this year I wanted to start with the newest and go from there. I use Remastersys to make my own install version for 600+ laptops and I need to be able to wipe out the existing systems without effort.

I recently bought an Acer Extensa 5635Z and things were fine until I lent it to my godson for a weekend and got it back with the internal hard drive not functioning; he said it worked one night, and didn't the next morning; now, it's not recognised and an OS is not found during bootup. Whereas this was bad news for me in one way, on the other hand it was the perfect chance to switch to Ubuntu, something I've been wanting to do for years, and I've been really enjoying most aspects of it after using a live disk to be able to do my work over the last couple of days. Now, instead of buying another new laptop, I would like to use an external hard drive that I've just bought in the place of my broken internal hd, and have Ubuntu on it.I've read tutorials on it and they basically say that all I have to do is:
* Run the live disk - done
* Uncheck these options -
Mount removable drives when hot-plugged

Is that it? Is there anything else I should do for this particular brand or situation (will the BIOS recognise the hard drive?) or any issues I should know about beforehand? How do I choose the HDD as primary boot? Should I insert the external HD before or after unchecking the options? Should I leave any of the 250 GB to '/dev/sda1'? There being no actual internal hard drive won't provoke trouble with the process?
P.S. My computer is 64-bit capable and I've been using a 64-bit Ubuntu disc. I've had trouble viewing things in this interim period, particularly videos, and incapable of installing codecs. Should I just get a 32-bit Ubuntu disc? Or will the problems be resolved when I have a rewritable disc on which to operate?

If I just upgrade my 10.10 to 11.04, will it replace gnome with unity? I tried unity before and it is not satifying because it is not customizable, I feel I have less options and less power over what my interface looks like and how it behaves. Same case with gnome3.I'm wondering if when I upgrade to Naughty will I have to go through a lot of messing around with packages and configuration files to get back to gnome2 ? Do we have an option when we upgrade to choose between Unity, Gnome2 and Gnome3?

I have Win XP installed on one hard disk drive (HDD1) and Ubuntu 9.10 installed on another hard disk drive (HDD2). Win XP was installed first then Unbuntu 9.10 which set up a dual boot menu. Win XP will no longer boot because I changed the BIOS setting from IDE to AHCI. The problem this causes is described at [URL]. The problem is that if you installed Windows in IDE mode (ie you didn't use F6 and supply a driver disk), then simply changing the BIOS setting to AHCI mode and rebooting will cause Windows to fail and will require a repair install. Most people have been advising to reinstall Windows if you want AHCI enabled. I have read that Win 7 supports AHCI "out of the box" so instead of re-installing Win XP I want to install Win 7 to replace it. I would like to know in advance what installing Win 7 will do to the dual boot menu?
