Ubuntu Installation :: Warning Saying That Kernel Needs To Be Installed First

Oct 11, 2010

I downloaded the full desktop .iso and burnt it to a pen-drive. Firstly I installed it on my main laptop and it runs flawlessly. With the Aspire One however, though it boots into live mode and works well, after installing and rebooting all I am left with is a flashing prompt in the top left hand corner. I left it for up to an hour thinking it may be slow to boot as its a fresh install but nothing. I booted again into the live distro and checked my hard drive. As far as I can tell everything is there. So Ubuntu installed which made me think the problem was with grub. From the live cd I installed grub using the commands:

>mount | tail -l
>sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-... /dev/sda

I rebooted but now I only have the grub prompt. When I type boot I get a warning saying that the kernel needs to be installed first. So why is 10.10 not booting? What else can I do to fix this problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: FGLRX Status On 10.04 Upgrade Warning?

Oct 17, 2010

I am running 8.04 on a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop. (My Toshiba model is unfortunately the one with the Phoenux BIOS)I have been happy with 8.04 LTS for quite some time now and was thinking of upgrading to 10.04 LTS, which the Update Manager says is available. I normally choose to upgrade a few months after release once things have stabilised a bit. I figured it was now time for 10.04.I accordingly have first taken all the updates for 8.04 and brought it up-to-date. Then when I click on Upgrade, I get the following messageUpgrading may reduce desktop effects and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs. This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardwarein Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Do you want to continue ?Since I wasn't sure of the exact entire implications, I said NO and exit the upgrade at that point.I then googled a bit and found this to be a pretty serious installation issue with a number of people who unfortunately have ATI display cards. But then I came across this page:Does the above link mean that this problem is now solved with respect to 10.04 as well ?Also, if not, what are the implications for me ? Does this mean I have to be stuck on 8.04 only ?If I choose to upgrade anyway, what display functionality will I lose ?I don't need Desktop Effects or other toys. But I do use GIMP quite a bit and also watch videos in multiple formats. Will I not be able to do these ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Resize Partition In GParted (Yellow Warning)

Jun 22, 2010

I have a USB Multiboot created with pendrivelinux.com. I have tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a small laptop, but I get the problem that the installer wants to either:

1) Partition my USB key and install it there
2) Install it on my drive and destroy the Windows Partition
4) Install it on my key and destroy everything on it.
3) Manually setup the partitions

When manually setting up partitions, I cannot resize the windows partition. GParted can't resize that partition (there is a triangular ! yellow warning sign, similar to this thread's icon, but yellow). GParted on the USB (GParted Environment) has the same problem as GParted in Ubuntu. It seems to be locked, even though I am in root and I have every hard drive partition unmounted.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting A Warning That Says "PC Video Resolution Is Out Of Range

Nov 8, 2010

I'm currently trying to install 10.10 on my (8-year old) desktop, but I'm getting a warning that says "PC video resolution is out of range. Change setting to Recommended resolution 1924*768@85Hz".

Which would be fine, if I knew how. Is there any way to do this in the installer? I can't get any further than the "Try/Install etc" menu screen.

It has a nvidia Geforce graphics card, if that helps. I can't give you any more info than that because the specs have been lost to the mists of time and old email addresses.

Ubuntu Installation :: Warning Against Selecting The 'update' Option In Meerkat?

Nov 22, 2010

Why isn't there a clear warning against selecting the 'update' option in Meerkat?I know it seems like a good idea to have it, but unless a server speed test is run, it adds a huge amount of time to the install (3 1/2 hours of downloading so far). It's not my internet connection (ADSL2+ - fast), so it must be an overloaded server and/or congested intercontinental data pipes.

After the installation, it's possible to find one's optimal (fastest) server before running updates - and I know from past experience that this makes a huge difference to little old me in Australia. I can certainly update everything much faster than I am currently seeing . I strongly recommend that, if this option is kept in future distributions, it should include a server speed test (and auto selection of the best server?) as well as a realistic warning to the user.

Ubuntu Installation :: Md5sum: WARNING: 1 Of 62 Listed Files Couldn't Be Read

Oct 17, 2010

In order to upgrade a machine that can not successfully upgrade to 10.4 I downloaded and burned the 10.04.1 iso image off the ubuntu alternate download site. In my first attempt I unsuccessfully burned the image with it failing at the very end. I did perform an md5sum on it and received the precise output I got from my second burn attenpt which DID complete successfully. Here is the output:

[code]...

I did research this last night and it seems the common wisdom was to reburn the iso (which I did twice) or copy down the iso again. This I also did and it came down precisely, bit for bit, the same as the first one. Here are the two cksums

[code]...

Is there something wrong with this image on the website or is the error about 1 file being unreadable (could that also mean missing?) be erroneous?

Debian Installation :: Etch Install Just Started Warning About Untrusted Versions

WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed!

Do you want to ignore this warning and proceed anyway?

I installed a system yesterday without any problems, so I wonder if there's a recent problem with the mirrors I'm using. My /target/etc/apt/sources.list contains:

deb [url]
deb [url]

So it looks like either the UK mirror or security.debian.org.

Debian Installation :: Booting Debian With Ubuntu/XP Triple / Warning Bootdevice May Be Renamed?

Mar 6, 2010

I had (and still do) a working dual-boot XP/Karmic (GRUB version 1.97 beta4). I shrank the Ubuntu partition and set up partitions and installed Debian 5.04. When I got to the point of installing GRUB, I told Debian to install grub to MBR. On rebooting, Ubuntu was not an option on the NEW (looked different) grub menu.Maybe it was GRUB2? Could boot to either XP or Debian though.

Thought easiest thing was to reinstall Ubuntu since it seems to "see" other OS's more reliably. So I did, and installed GRUB again during its install to MBR. Then, all three were in the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4 again), but when tried booting to Debian, got an error (forget the wording), but think it was because the partitions got renumbered when installing Ubuntu.

SO, reinstalled Debian, reformatting the partitions but not deleting them first so the numbering stayed the same. When got to the part for installing GRUB, I told it to skip (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..."), hoping now the current GRUB would work.

Now, all three were on the GRUB menu, but when I tried to boot Debian, I got "no such device" and a list of numbers/letters after it. And "press any key to continue", which takes you back to the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4, by the way).

O.K., did sudo update-grub in ubuntu and rebooted. Now, Debian 5.04 shows as last entry in GRUB, and choosing it starts a boot, which hangs at "Begin: Waiting for root file system....".

Waiting long enough at the "Waiting for root file system..." hang results in a series of notifications:

WARNING bootdevice may be renamed. Try root=dev/hda3
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-Check root= (did the sytem wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sda3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

In Gparted, the partition with Debian root is hdc3, although on the GRUB menu it's listed as /dev/sda3. However, in Gparted the Windows partition is hdc1 and on GRUB it's /dev/sda1, and it boots fine.....

Is my Debian install just borked? Did telling it to skip installing a bootloader (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..." ruin it?

If skipping the bootloader install did ruin it, how do you install Debian without borking your current GRUB? That's what happened the first time.
