Ubuntu :: How To Set LibreOffice To Open MS Office Downloads In FireFox
May 23, 2011
I have a very quick question (and I can't believe I can't figure this one out myself: sorry). I installed 11.04 this weekend. Now, when I download, say, a word doc using FireFox, LibreOffice doesn't by default open the file (instead, Wine tries to open it; but, alas, fails). Now, when I try to open with another application, when prompted by the Firefox download window, I have no idea how to allocate LibreOffice as the programme to open the download. I can navigate to the .libreoffice folder, for example, but then I'm presented with many other folders, with many files, etc, and I have no idea how to set LibreOffice to open the file.
I know I can save file to hard-drive, then open manually. However, I would like to be able to simply open the file directly with LibreOffice.

When I right-click on a file in my firefox downloads window and choose "open containing folder", it opens the folder in EasyTag. I tried both of the below "solutions" and logged out and logged back in to openSUSE and it still uses EasyTag! Is it because I need a restart or is it something else?
Neither one has worked yet... [URL] Open Containing Folder in Firefox under Linux

I have installed LibreOffice (x86) on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, and it's working great!
I'm just curious if anyone knows a quick way to make LibreOffice the default for all of the appropriate files (doc, odt, xls, ods, etc.)
I searched around in the the LibreOffice>Tools>Options, but I haven't found anything yet. I'm aware that I could right click on a ods file and use the "Open With Other Application" to set a default for that one filetype, but I figured that there's probably a way to completely switch all office file types to Libreoffice.

I've ran into something rather odd. I've installed wine and Office 2007. If I am to open a office 2003 (doc) or office 2007 (docx) file, it will open wine and office 2007 to edit the file. This is the desired behaviour. If I am to open an office 2003 (doc) file in firefox, openoffice will be opened. If I am to do the same with an office 2007 (docx) file, wine and office 2007 will open.where to start to get wine/office 2007 to open files from firefox?

I have some questions about security
1> are the flash exploits are of any use to a Linux operating system like Ubuntu etc. ?
2>are the Microsoft office exploits any risk to libreoffice or open-office software suites?
3>are there exploits for Linux , open-office and libreoffice ?

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

Which LXDE version of Linux has the newest version of Firefox and Open Office included?
I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.

I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

When I open an open office document from an NFS share it always opens as readonly. This was a problem I had on Arch linux and the fix was to change the locking options in the soffice script but I've tried that fix here and it doesn't work. I've seen a lot of discussions but they all go back to changing the locking options in soffice, has anyone got any alternative fixes or one that definitely works with locking?

I have a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 lucid .... When I went to download some files via firefox, I noticed that the downloads would stop before the download is complete. I tried to download a small 8MB file and it reached almost 4MB then the download simply stopped and firefox incorrectly informed me that the download was finished.. I tried several more downloads after that of various other files and the same thing happens. I have never had trouble downloading files before. I upgraded to firefox 3.6.13 before I noticed this problem so I do not know if it was doing it before I upgraded as this is a fresh ubuntu install.

I am new to linux in general and have an older sysytem that I successfully partitioned to run ubuntu, kubuntu, and windoze. I was a casual mac user before thius and am used to packages--so I have no exp. installing tarballs. I am trying to install xampp and successfully downloaded it, but now am at a loss as to what to do--nothing seems to be working. I am using firefox which for some reason is not saving to downloads even though that is what I have set in pref. Is there a way I can use apt-get for this (although my understanding of that isn't much better. I can't seem to find the relevant information in documentation.

OpenSuse 11.4. LibreOffice any versions and Infra Resource OpenOffice can not open any DBF files from smb/cifs shares. At the same time he can write DBF to smb/cifs normally, but after saving it he can't open it!
Any other documents - no problem! odt, xls - any! but not DBF.. And this problem is only on OpenSUSE 11.4 and only in Libre/Open Office! Any other programms can open and write DBF files to smb/cifs shares.

I've had a problem with libreoffice - it won't open files. That is,File/Open doesn't bring up a dialog box. File/New works and so does using a filename on the command line when starting libreoffice. Now there's good news and bad news. The good news is that with help from some libreoffice-users folks, I now know what caused this and I have a workaround. The bad news is that it's a bug in Libreoffice and I need some help testing other versions, please. So here's the steps to reproduce:
(1) Login to a Gnome session (KDE may also work, dunno)
(2) Start libreoffice
(3) Select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
(4) Observe in that page a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
(5) Ensure the checkbox is blank (not selected)
(6) Save settings and check that File/Open pops up a dialog box.
(7) Quit libreoffice and log out of the session
(8) Login to an LXDE session
(9) Start libreoffice
(10) Select File/Open
*(11) Check whether a dialog box appears
(12) If not, select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
*(13) Check whether there is a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
If your system does NOT open a dialog box in step 11 and does NOT have a checkbox in step 13, you are seeing the same bug as me.I'm using opensuse 11.3.

I have been unable to open my Downloads folder for 2 days now. I've tried everything. I can get into every other folder on my machine though. I also have 103GB free space on my machine. Is there perhaps a limit on the amount of data I can have per folder? I'm running 64bit Ubuntu.

Transmission says my port is closed. If I google the problem, it just gives me advice on how to open a port in Windows OS. There's no firewall in Ubuntu 10.10 by default, right? There isn't any router used neither. I'm living in a dorm. I just plug the LAN cable in the box fixed to the wall.

During downloads, the top command shows the Firefox process at 100% CPU. Yesterday I tried to download an .iso image. After a few hours the Firefox window would not refresh nor would it respond to input. I tried the wget command. It used negligible CPU time and completed in 28 minutes.
This problem is easy to reproduce because it happens every time I download a file in Firefox. It also happens when I use a fresh profile to run Firefox without any extensions or plugins.
This is Firefox 3.6.12 on Fedora 14.

I can't get Firefox to open Opendoc files in the correct program.
I'm using Gnome 2.32 (or 1.4.2? I'm not sure) and KDE 4.6.1 and in both instances whenever I download an ODT and right-click to "Open" it in the Downloads window, Firefox opens up "python /usr/bin/ebook-viewer (filename)".
I already went into mimeTypes.rdf and deleted the entire reference to odt, and I also went into dolphin, konqueror and nautilus to make sure it opens into Libre Office.
What else do I need to do to make Firefox open ODT files in the application I desire?

I received some M$ Power Points files and cannot open then. One file was from Power Points 2010, and another saved with the option 2000-2010. These were rejected by Impress with the failure report "Version Incompatibility. Incorrect file version". When a file was saved with the option Power Point 95, Impress tried to open it but when RAM useable ramped up to > 1GB, Impress automatically shut down. The only other information wrt the files is that its highly likely they contain graphics generated with M$Visio. Has anyone had similar experiences? Are there any work arounds?
