I posted this the other day. Just thought that made it would get more attention here. http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/show....php?t=1672472Quote:I have been running a mythbuntu 8.1 for almost 2 years now. I finilly decided to do a distr.-upgrade. I used the distr.-upgrade tool in X to install the upgrade. On reboot everything was working fine. I then did an update and a reboot. Now I get nothing that I can read. no bios splash, no grub, no x login, just horizotil black lines that keep flashing on screen. I tryed to hit control-alt-f2 and nothing changes. I hit the numlock and the numlock light does not come on. It seems like the system is not even running.
Now the kicker. If I telnet into the machine it is running. I can access mythweb from another computer. It is still recoding and trascoding. It is running. But I can't just into login to it locally.I setup up gdm to autologin but it does not start x. I have a vnc server that is not acsessable.Motherboard asus m2n-xAMD athlon x2 38001gb ram1tb driveati video card2 pvr-1501 pvr-500
Total noob here. I am trying to install Mythbuntu 10.10 on a computer with and empty hard drive using a CD.The install start fine, I make a couple of selections to tell the installer I want to use the entire harddrive, select the timezone and the install starts without any problems. Unfortunatly after about 30min or so, the installation seem to be stalled out with the progress bar at the 85-90% range. There are no obvious errors in the log.
I have successing installed Ubuntu in the past (although not on this hardware). The PC includes an IDE based DVD-R, 120Gb sata based ssd, 939 dual core processor. 8600GT video card. 2Gb memory. One possibility is that I don't have a TV tuner card installed yet. Was going to do that after I got Ubuntu up and running but perhaps the installer is looking for a tuner card. I realize I am not giving anyone much to work but I am not sure what I could post.
Allrigt, I am a noob, so take it easy with me I installed mythbuntu 10.10 a couple of days ago. I had problem with my Nvidia card (as everyone else it seems). I have a Geforce3 Ti500 GPU card (and I am running on a 32-bit version). First I had to enable all the (almost all) flags in the installation gui by pressing F6 (other options) (using live CD).
Then when the installation was made, it all froze at the startup. I managed to get a prompt by holding ESC at startup (I never got it to work with CTRL+ALT+F1, it was perhaps me or perhaps that won't work before the system is restarted and the installation complete?). Allright, to be able to startup, I downloaded new drivers (well, old ones it seems), NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.19-pkg1.run
I am trying to create a dual boot setup with Windows XP. Everything goes smoothly untill the final reboot. I get a text screen giving me the two options of booting into Windows XP or Mythbuntu. When I select Mythbuntu I get a second text screen with a rectangle only showing Windows XP as an option -nothing else. Hitting enter causes error message. If I selext the Windows XP option on the first screen system boots into windows without a problem. I suspect this should be fairly easy to fix - but being a complete noob to Linux I am lost as to what to do to correct this.
Had mythbuntu/xbmc running for 4 months with vdpau and all the same hardware. I killed it with an update and thought it'd all be easier To build it the 2nd time -- wrong! Fresh install of mythbuntu lucid off cd, Asus p5g43t-m pro, nvidia gforce 9500 gt
What I tried so far...Different drivers with the hardware app thingee. Multiple times -- Purge nvidia, purge nouveau, blacklist list of other video stuff with extra line after, stop gnome, manual install various drivers - 195.xxxxx or Synaptic install various drivers. Tried updates, adding avenard and daily build repos. Everything in combinations. Outcome remains consistant. Lo res error start, can't load nvidia driver, selected but not in use, xorg.conf needs editing.
I'm getting the same error messages as the common nvidia help posts describe but the solutions aren't working for me.
4 days of this, 3 installs plus a shot at Mint, and no progress. I'm pretty frustrated. I'd consider returning to karmic if I didn't think the updates would pork the nvidia driver all over again.
Last install of 9.10 there was a required edit of vmalloc=256M and a shut off of cx18. That's been fixed in lucid? What else ccould it be?
I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.
I have an ECS gf7100pvt-m3 that has the Nvidia MCP73 chipset that supports HDMI out. Unfortunately the MB only has a DVI connector which from what I have read is supposed to cross wire the audio to the correct pins on the HDMI (have a ticket in with ECS to see if like ATI there is a special adapter).
I have tried every thing but only Analog audio is working.
I've tried listed on these links to no avail:
[url] [url] [url] [url]
The only error is the at the Aumix isn't touching....I can select HDMI or IEC958 1 etc etc and the audio mixer shows full blue as if it should be working but I can't get VLC or MythTV to output sound.
I have installed mythbuntu 10.04 and installed my tv tuner (saa7130). I can play games on composite but cannot scan for tv cannels. how i can scan for channels because he cannot find a single channel (I think this is weird) ?
Installed Mythbuntu today. Spend hour over hour trying to get MythTVto work together with my Hauppauge WinTv-NOVA-HD-S2 card. I've followd so many wikis, reinstalled, tried again ... no success. The card itself works fine. I can use it with MeTV or on Mplayer - no problem. I managed to create a channels.conf. Also no problem. MythTV recognizes the correct card. I have set it to LNB. Now in the backend setup I cannot manage to get the card to scan. And if I try to point it to the channels.conf I am also getting an error message (Failed to open '%1'.
The internet has been working happily on my Mythbuntu machine for many months but stopped working overnight. If I try to do "sudo start networking" I get a "Job failed to start" message. There's also a solid orange light on the ethernet socket. As it's been working for months, I don't think my interfaces config needs updating.Looking at what's been updated recently on the system:
1) I've configured the machine to wake from USB. It was working for a couple of days so I don't believe this is the issue.
2) I set up wake-on-lan with ethtool. Again, this was working (although it did seem to disable wake-on-usb and required a reboot to fix)
3) Update to 11.04 - I said no to this, as 10.10 was working very nicely indeed.
I've disabled wake on lan and rebooted. No joy.
ethtool detects the ethernet controller ok and it's listed in lshw.
is there any simple way how to upgrade 0.22+fixes (under Mythbuntu 9.10) to 0.23+fixes? For example any debian package (which I didn't found) to download and simply unpack and install? I'm afraid that if I modify this MythTV, Open Source DVR for 0.23 and use it on 9.10 with 0.22 I'll have problems with directories and so on...
I can install Boxee beta on my mythbuntu 9.04 installation, but when I try to run it, I get the following errors:
/opt/boxee$ ./run-boxee-desktop /opt/boxee/Boxee: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /opt/boxee/Boxee) ./run-boxee-desktop: 38: /opt/boxee/give_me_my_mouse_back: not found
I get the same error if I run as root. For now, I don't care so much about the second error, but if anybody has some advice about how to resolve the first error (GLIBCXX...), I've used Linux for years (usually gentoo. I would be surprised if the version of Boxee compiled for Ubuntu 9.04 depended on an installed library without the proper compiler version.
Note that I am using *mythbuntu*, not ubuntu itself, so this may be part of the problem, but it would also surprise me... I'm happy to just install the correct library, but where is it?? I assume I should get it from Ubuntu, or I will break something.
I've also posted to the boxee support forum, but not heard back yet (they are probably busy!)...
Also, I've got Boxee alpha running in a 32 bit chroot environment (on my 64 bit machine), so at least *some* version of Boxee runs, but I wonder if there is some conflict between the two versions.
I'm trying to get my screen resolution set in Mythbuntu 9.10, but there is no xorg.conf on my system! I'm trying to figure out what to do (the xfce tool on mythbuntu doesn't offer the correct resolution, and I'm not even sure what driver I'm using). I've seen other threads saying to run nvidia-setup or somesuch. I assume the appropriate tool in my case would be aticonfig (I saw that elsewhere too) as I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600XT, but that tool says:
Am attempting to set a static IP address on a server (to be used with Mythtv) and is running mythbuntu 10.04 (apologies if this is the wrong place to post this). I can set a static IP address that is in the range of 192.168.1.x on other machines on the network but when I try with the server it is not able to connect to the network. When using the DHCP rather than manually assigning the address it is assigned an address with the 10.0.0.x range. Why is it doing this I have never have this problem on other ubuntu boxes (and this one prior to a format of the OS).
The router/gateway is 192.168.1.1 I did have a DHCP server on the mythbox before formatting it and I was able to assign a static 192.168 address and retain internet connectivity. But I have re-enabled the DHCP server on my router since formatting the box.
What is the minimum price I can expect to spend to build a Mythbuntu computer from scratch, and are there any good guides out there explaining how to do it?
I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.
I don't what happened but yesterday I was working normally and then I shutdown the computer, today when I opened ubuntu it took me to tyy1 login screen, I entered my username and password then it took me to the normal login screen with the login drums sound and it wrote on my account (logged in) so I clicked it and I entered my password again and then I got to my ubuntu so what went wrong and how to fix it also I noticed that a new terminal in system tools occurred called Kernel (I didn't add it)
I'm using ubuntu 10.10 on Dell inspiron 1520 with Nvidia 8600GT and 3GB RAM
Important: this happened after update to generic-headers-24
I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix. did : CTRL + ALT + F1 switch to one virtual console sudo service gdm stop
I installed 10.04 on my pc. I also have 9.08 and XP installed. Both work. The 10.04 gui login screen displays and asks for the password. I enter the password. The screen goes blank but after a few seconds the gui login box re appears and again asks for a login. I rebooted into the TTY, created a new user, checked the new user was in in /etc/passwd and that I could get into the new user's account. When I rebooted into the gui the new user was there and I entered the password but again I just got back to the gui login window. The pc I am using is at least 5 years old. I have tried startx and I do get the gui background but no controls are displayed. I am using 32 bit 10.04. Using the TTY I have uploaded all the current fixes.
yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console username: Name password: last used: [date] login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.
edited: i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?
I would like to post my problems here with Fedora 11 regarding that I am using Dell inspiron 1525, Dual core-N series. I have got two problems:
First;- After I updated my system, I have experienced a a login problem , which is each time I try to login and insert my password correctly it seems that it will login but it comes back to the same login screen as if I did not do anything, but after too many times it works.
Second: I read some posts in a website that talks about configuring the RPM fusion "Repo" and I did all the steps posted there , but after that whenever I try to update or download anything through terminal.... it appears the following:
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 server on a dual Opteron Fujitsu Siemens Primergy RX220.After reboot the screen goes black (as if X is probing), displays garbage (short white horizontal stripes aligned such that I get 2 broken vertical stripes) and the system seems to stop (no visible reaction to keyboard input, console switching apparently not working, CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE no visible effect, HD LED switches off and on only sporadically for very short time). This happens regardless of booting the normal or the rescue image. The last visible output from the rescue boot says something about init-bottom, but I can't see if it succeeds or not.The installation process itself fell back to text console, which was fine for me
I downloaded the .ISO for Fedora Core 14 Live, with the intention of installing it to my HDD.
I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.
I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).
Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.
I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.
I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.
Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?
I inadvertently destroyed a wonderful 9.04 version and downloaded and installed 9.10 from DVD successfully, specifying automatic logging on of my user. Did a lot of cosmetic changes and it rebooted Ok at least once. It's probably a red herring, but the last thing I did was comment out a line in /etc/default/grub that had "splash" in it, and afterwards ran the script that creates menu.cfg.Well, the splash is still there but now it ends with the login screen. I give it the correct password, and it splashes again and comes backs to the login screen. Repeatedly. i.e. I can't login at all.
I followed the instructions at [URL] but its a no go! My connection just hangs like it can't find the server. I can ssh into it using the username and password I setup, but can't ftp, what gives?
