Due to the problem with the upgrade killing xp partitions, I reformatted my drives and am trying to install 10.04. However, after choosing install ubuntu or try ubuntu without changes, my monitor stops getting input from my computer. If I click the try ubuntu, I hear the start up noise on my speakers, but I see nothing.

View 3 Replies View Relatedthis has happened with a few different attempts of ubuntu based distros lately ... i try to boot a live cd it gets to where it starts loading and the monitor pops off and says input out of range ... im aware that this is a known bug with xorg choosing either the wrong resolution or refresh rate ... but what the heck are we supposed to do , i can't get far enough into the boot process that i can open a terminal and try to bypass xorg ... so will all future distributions of ubuntu just be out of the question for me ? if you ask me what needs to be done is make the installer ASK what resolution you want to attempt to boot at .... similar to what puppy does

But when I upgrade to ubuntu 11.04, it have problems with Wifi, when I connect Internet via Wifi, just input the Password, it make my computer slow to halt, and have to turn the power off to shutdown the computer.

Upon Live Boot from USB I've choosen both the Install & Boot options, then It thinks for a minute; and I recieve "No Input Signal". I'm leaning toward it being my "Graphics Card"(NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT OR ANY OF MY HARDWARE!!!!; but it is an "ATI" ^_^), but thats just a guess. My trusty 11.04 x64 Ubuntu desktop machine stopped booting up properly about 2 weeks ago - it goes through Grub and into Plymouth, but then freezes and stops responding to keyboard input either on a dark purple screen, or less often the same but with the Ubuntu logo and the 5 boot progress circles but with none of them lit up. I can hit escape early on after grub and see initialisation reports showing everything successful (other than a fail on "Automatic crash report generation") - up to a line saying "Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [OK]", at which point it freezes.
Going into recovery mode allows me to fsck the disk (which is fine, and smartctl reports all attributes as fine), fix packages (which I have done a number of times, to no avail) and boot into safe graphical mode, which works fine, albeit only on one monitor and with very poor graphics performance, obviously. As the machine was borked and everything was backed up on my fileserver anyway, I decided to nuke it and give Fedora a go (I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty and it was a good time to try something else). Fedora was fine (and worked with the default nouveau driver), but I didn't like it, so after less than 24 hours away from the fold I decided to come back to Ubuntu.
At least a reinstall should fix the problem with booting, right? Wrong! The live CD worked fine, installed perfectly, and the machine behaved itself upon first reboot - at which point I ran apt-get dist-upgrade, restarted, and blam - right back where I started. Updated vanilla Ubuntu 11.04 will not boot. Has Ubuntu released a dodgy package that has broken my x server? I don't want to have to go back to 10.10 -

it goes on loading ubuntu and then after when i am suppose to get my home screen with bird background to view, monitor stops getting signal.
i tried both 32 bit and 64 bit

but no luck where as 9.10 works like a charm and i have no issue in working with it.
but because of some external H/W drievrs i need to stick to old karnel version which supports 2.6.30 or lower
I am using a 64 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Studio. Sometimes my computer stops responding. I wouldn't say completely frozen, kinda semi-freeze. I am able to see the mouse pointer move and also when I move the mouse pointer over the Maximize, Minimize or Close buttons, the buttons get highlighted but I am unable to click on them. Alt+Tab key combination to move to another window doesn't work either. I experienced the same problem when using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit for which reason I dumped Ubuntu then.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI basically destroyed my laptop a couple of years ago. Windows XP wouldn't even start but it didn't come with an installation disk. I tried recovering it but it just died. So a few months ago I put a box of thing on top of it which broke the screen! I was going to chuck it out until I stumbled upon a page which told you you could use it as a web server.
I decided to use it to host my website. I installed ubuntu without a problem however it wasn't until I was about to start it up I found out it was against BT's terms and conditions!! So since I installed ubuntu I thought I might as well make use of it and use it to render my files. When I went to turn it on for the second time and plugged it into the monitor it said input signal out of range!
I can see the login screen but I can't move the mouse or anything. I can't access the terminal, how can fix this?
I run Natty 64x (new install) and have setup to use two seperate x servers and no xinerama. When I start my computer everything seems fine on both monitors but once desktop is loaded and I start an app in the second monitor, I can't type anything and the window borders are missing. If I type "DISPLAY:=0.1 metacity" the problem gets fixed but I get an error that a window manager is running already.

Since then I have been really happy, I only had minor problem with the chat software but after I googled it I found a solution and I even used the console for the first time in my life.
The problem with the chat software is back now, but I don't care about that.My Computer randomly stops working and the screen goes all weird. It switches between a mix of white and black bars, something really colorful and a black screen with text ( I have the feeling it's different text every time) I am not sure what happens after that, because I always turn it off and restart it. It won't react to anything when it is in this weird mode. I don't think there are any special situations in which it happens and I can't reproduce it, it just happens when I don't want it to happen. A friend who uses Linux said it might be a temperature problem, he only knew what I just told you. I am not sure if there is a connection between the time the computer has been on and the time it shuts off...I really like Linux and I would love to use it without ith when I said that I got my PC new ( it was used though) I was trying to say that I don't know whether this is a Ubuntu problem or not
One DVD+R that I made from a download plays perfectly on my computer's player. Yet, every time that I insert it into my stand alone player connected to my TV, it stutters and stops repeatedly.If the disc were dirty, it should misbehave in my computer as well, no? Everything is working fine except the button that is pressed when I close my lid. Hibernate works, Suspend works, blank screen works. user is member of the group "powerdev". I really thought thread "closing-laptop-lid-renders-computer-unusable-786822" would bring me a solution. When I close my lid my screens turns black with my mouse cursor on it. Connections with ssh are broken. Keyboard is dead, mouse pad too. It looks like it never start any software it just hangs immediately. I cant find anything in my logs.
Running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx here. Got a LCD AOC monitor. Model e943Fws. Starts OK until logging screen. As soon as i try to log into my account a "input not support" floats around the screen. Are there drivers i should install? Anybody knows this LED monitor..?

This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time).

I just had it happen again. I tried unplugging the DVI cable from the back of the computer and then plugging it back in. The monitor then displayed the desktop properly. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not in what I may need to change settings-wise.
I am having a strange problem I've never encountered before. I have an Asus Eee S101 10.1" netbook with the 32GB SSD. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition.
The other day, I was browsing with Firefox, when suddenly the entire computer came screeching to a halt. Had to power it down with the power button. After this happened, I have been unable to use the same Firefox profile I had been using. I had to start Firefox from the command line with the -ProfileManager switch, then create a new profile to keep browsing.
I wanted to completely get rid of the old profile, so from the Profile Manager I tried to delete the old one. Computer hung, had to reboot with the power switch. I then tried to browse to the .mozilla/firefox directory and delete the profile's directory there, from both Nautilus and the command line. Both times, the computer froze.
I tried a few more times, and the couple of times the computer didn't freeze, I got an error from the command line saying a Bash input/output error. After this error appeared, it would appear no matter what command I ran - I couldn't even run a sudo reboot now.
I can create/delete other files and directories, just not that Firefox profile.
I installed Fedora 11 on my system (see below) using the i686 DVD. The graphical install worked just fine, and after the system booted back up, the X server was working very well.
There is no boot text. On the other system with Fedora 11, I can see the boot text scroll by in the window and/or a progress bar at the bottom of the monitor during the boot sequence. On this system, the monitor says "No Input", and nothing appears until the login prompt for the X window. I am able to enter the BIOS configuration page and navigate through it without any issues. I can also edit the grub commands before Fedora loads without a problem.
If I boot in text mode, no login prompt appears. If I wait long enough, the monitor enters the power save mode since it is not receiving a signal. I am able to log in to the system with my user name and password, and then start the X server. Once the server starts, the monitor turns back ON and all is well.
From the X window, I use the CTL+ALT+F2 key to enter text mode. The monitor stops responding. If I press the ENTER key a couple of times, then press ALT+F7, I can briefly see the text window with a couple of login prompts before the X window starts responding again.
How can I get the text mode to work? Why is there no input to the monitor when booting?

So I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

my monitor broke and I can't get a new one for about a week, and there are files I need on my PC. I was wondering if I could move those files to a memory stick by using only the tty1 CLI, or better yet, get access to the PC via my laptop. How would I do this?
Could I use remote desktop? (My previous experience with remote desktop didn't go well, but maybe since the PC and the laptop are on the same network it would be easier?)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

I am using a laptop that is connected wirelessly to my router, i am able to monitor the upload and download for my laptop but i would like to view the statistics for for the whole network without being connected to the router.

(I have investigated a number of such options: getting a docking station with a PCI slot, USB/Cardbus vga adapters, etc, and for the time being don't want to go that way.)
I am wondering if using an older desktop+screen I have lying around as the third "monitor" might be the easiest solution, if only there is a way to get it to work as a seamless, integrated desktop.
I was wondering if I can use VNC or perhaps X itself (?) to achieve the following:
computer A is my main computer; it has all my files, etc. computer B is used just to display on an additional screen keyboard+mouse are connected to computer A use VNC or X to connect the two so that computer B shows a X screen that is just as if it was a third physical screen connected to computer A.
I don't know if the last point is clear, but what I mean is that I would like to be able to:
be able to have my window manager assign/move around virtual desktops on all three screens move windows back and forth between the screens attached to computer A and the screen of computer B be able to copy something in an app being shown on a screen of computer A and paste it into an app being shown on the screen attached to computer B access the filesystem on my main computer (A) when using applications that are being shown on the screen attached to computer B
Basically, I would like X to treat computer B just like it was nothing but a third physical screen...
I have a rather odd problem with a machine. Up until the user logs in everything is fine, but as soon as they log in the display breaks up rendering the computer unusable. Booting from CD is ok, but the monitor is not detected.

I am using CentOS (don't remember the exact version it's probably 5.6 or 6.0).
on a 6-7 years old compaq laptop, connected to a brand new hp monitor i am having a mismatch with computer/monitor resolution.
before i had ubuntu 10.04 which could only run in x's safe graphics mode - allowing for full screen resolution but with handicapped graphics - for example videos fullscreen would be quirky and run with cpu at 100%, something which was no problem before 10.04.
then i tried ubuntu 10.10 and later lubuntu 10.10 (which had exactly the same problem); the monitor is running 1440x900 while the computer is rendering to only 1024x768 - leaving a huge black border on right and bottom of screen. the gfx is still crippled; videos fullscreen is quirky as before.
I use XDMCP from an old laptop to login remotely to another computer which is running Debian 6. This seemed to work fine in Debian Lenny, and the laptop screen would switch off after a period of inactivity as I expected. Now the laptop screen blanks after inactivity, but the backlight never switches off.
