Which were the last connections to my machine (IP addresses) What were the files accessed by that IP address

I am using CentOS (don't remember the exact version it's probably 5.6 or 6.0).

Ubuntu :: Access A Computer With No Monitor?

Jun 26, 2011

my monitor broke and I can't get a new one for about a week, and there are files I need on my PC. I was wondering if I could move those files to a memory stick by using only the tty1 CLI, or better yet, get access to the PC via my laptop. How would I do this?

Could I use remote desktop? (My previous experience with remote desktop didn't go well, but maybe since the PC and the laptop are on the same network it would be easier?)

Software :: Access Computer A's Shares As Well As The Third Computer, The Aforementioned Computers Cannot Access Computer B

May 28, 2011

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.

Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.

What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.

What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Monitor File Access

Jan 5, 2010

Karmic 9.10 x64 Gnome. On my home LAN, i want to be able to monitor what files are being access on my local machine. I had a quick look at wireshark, but it didnt do exactly what i wanted. I have a share directory, read-only, and often divx files are streamed directly from it rather than copied first. I want to be able to see what user is accessing what file. Should be a fairly simple task, but im just not sure how its done.It can be terminal based, doesnt have to live and constantly updating, just a report. But a prog with a GUI would be useful too.

General :: Using A Second Computer As A Mere Screen/monitor In X (VNC?)

Mar 1, 2010

My goal is to use three monitors with my Linux system. It is a laptop, so adding another video card is not the easiest solution. (I have investigated a number of such options: getting a docking station with a PCI slot, USB/Cardbus vga adapters, etc, and for the time being don't want to go that way.)

I am wondering if using an older desktop+screen I have lying around as the third "monitor" might be the easiest solution, if only there is a way to get it to work as a seamless, integrated desktop.

I was wondering if I can use VNC or perhaps X itself (?) to achieve the following:

computer A is my main computer; it has all my files, etc. computer B is used just to display on an additional screen keyboard+mouse are connected to computer A use VNC or X to connect the two so that computer B shows a X screen that is just as if it was a third physical screen connected to computer A.

I don't know if the last point is clear, but what I mean is that I would like to be able to:

be able to have my window manager assign/move around virtual desktops on all three screens move windows back and forth between the screens attached to computer A and the screen of computer B be able to copy something in an app being shown on a screen of computer A and paste it into an app being shown on the screen attached to computer B access the filesystem on my main computer (A) when using applications that are being shown on the screen attached to computer B

Basically, I would like X to treat computer B just like it was nothing but a third physical screen...

Ubuntu Networking :: Monitor Internet Connections ?

Jun 7, 2010

I am a user of Ubuntu 10.04 and I use Firestarter because it lets me know which IPs I am connected to, which ports are used, and which applications are using those ports. The problem is that I can't use Firestarter with my non-sudo account (well, I know that I can change my system settings to do that, but I'd rahther not do it).

So the question is: Is there any application that lets the user monitor the internet connection?

Networking :: Monitor Gateway Connections - Iptables?

Jun 3, 2010

I want to find out which server/service a streaming box connects to and maybe also take a look at some packets. The box connects to the Internet via a Linux gateway running Debian I have root access to. I have some basic knowledge about iptables, tcpdump, netstat etc. but couldn't yet figure out how to get this info.

My first approach was with netstat, but this traffic seems not to be visible (which somehow makes sense to me). My next guess was that with iptables it should be possible to log this connections, however I couldn't yet figure out how to.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Ssh Into Computer - Error "could Not Access PID File For Sshd"

Mar 31, 2010

I'm having a problem with my ubuntu 9.10 machine. I can ssh out of the computer, but not in. I have /etc/init.d/ssh, but not /etc/init.d/sshd - don't know if this is normal If I run /etc/init.d/ssh status I get: robot@cora:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh status * could not access PID file for sshd

If I run /etc/init.d/ssh restart (or stop then start) then I can ssh both ways. But I cannot get this to work automatically at boot. The machine is going to be in a remote location, so I need the ability to ssh INTO it after reboot, which I don't have. I have confirmed that start files are located in /etc/rc3.d/S16ssh

I've uninstalled and reinstalled openssh-server (via "apt-get remove openssh-server" and "apt-get install openssh-server") and this did not help. There are both /etc/ssh/ssh_config and /etc/ssh/sshd_config files that look like they are standard (compared to what I've found from web searches). /etc/init.d/ssh is also standard.

General :: Gnome - Cannot Access Computer Or Trash Locations

Mar 4, 2010

I have built gnome-2.28.1 from scratch (source) with gnome I compiled GDM and many other programs. GDM is starting fine, I can enter my user on the login prompt and login without problems. When I'm in the desktop I can't access the Computer or Trash locations clicking on the icon or even through Nautilus, the same error happening:
Error: Operation not supported.

I tried debugging by hand running the follow command: gvfs-ls trash://
Which tells me exactly Error: Operation not supported.

On my ubuntu system, lsof | grep gvfs returns a lot of gvfsd* daemons, like gvfsd-computer and gvfsd-trash. On my Scratch system lsof | grep gvfs doesn't return anything. My prefix used when building gnome was /opt/gnome and sysconfdir on /etc/gnome/2.28.1. lsof shows me that D-Bus is running, actualy gdm starts gnome with dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session.

And inside my /etc/dbus-1/session-local.conf I have:
Code:
<!DOCTYPE busconfig PUBLIC
"-//freedesktop//DTD D-BUS Bus Configuration 1.0//EN"
"[URL]"> <busconfig>
<!-- Search for .service files in /usr/local -->
<servicedir>/opt/gnome/share/dbus-1/services</servicedir>
</busconfig>

Well, I done many tweaks around and still can't display gvfs location, what I think is very odd is that lsof doesn't returns any gvfsd* daemon running.

Ubuntu Networking :: The Phone Can Access The Internet Through The Computer Unable To Get Access To Https Sites, Like Webmails

Dec 31, 2010

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following

----On the phone---

-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.

-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.

-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"

----On Ubuntu 10.04---

-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server

-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.

-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.

-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd

-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).

-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"

-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.

-Apply policies and start the firewall.

------------

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:

1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.

2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.

So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

General :: Unable To Access File /home/username/.iceauthority: No Such File Or Directory

Apr 21, 2011

Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:

Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory

Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X

Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0

So I tried to run this;

Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.

So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.

But I would like to if there is any clever ways of monitoring this. This is how I do it which is a bit crude, and I have to know which directory to monitor. Before running the command, I run

And after running the command, I run

Code:

for i in $(ls -A) do; md5sum $i >> /tmp/after; done

Code:

diff /tmp/{before,after}

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Access System>Pereferences>Network Connections?

Mar 15, 2011

I just installed Debian and am getting a problem where I can't open the list of network connections. I can use the network manager applet to connect to wireless networks, but I cannot access the network connections list from there either (right click "edit connections)

I'm not incredibly knowledgeable with Linux, but I tried a few simple things I could think of like reinstalling the packages, or restarting the interfaces. (ifdown/up wlan0)

It's strange, because when I click "network connections," I see it show up for a second on the bottom panel, I get some rotating mouse icon while I wait a few seconds and then if goes away. Is there some kind of logfile that could help me identify the problem?

Using Debian 6 on eeePC1000HEB with Ath9k (i think) wireless card. Net Interface: wlan0
