Ubuntu :: Get A Box Stating That The File Is Not Marked As An Executable?

Aug 5, 2010

So I'm following the online tutorials I've found to install sketchup, and I've run into a snag right off the bat. The instructions I've found say to open the Sketchup exe file by right clicking and selecting open with Wine I do this and I get a box stating that the file is not marked as an executable. How do I fix that? Step by step instructions would be best since I only just installed ubuntu for the first time two days ago

Ubuntu :: Not Marked As Executable

Sep 22, 2010

I want to run minecraft, but when clicking Minecraft.jar it wont cuz of Ubuntu's policy crap. Is there a way to turn this off, because this is worse than Windows UAC. If not, using Java SDK 6, how can I run it? I'm assuming it's a terminal command since wine lets you get around the restrictions with a sudo wine command.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Setup Not Marked As Executable

Jul 1, 2011

I'm new to ubuntu, and I've been trying to get shockwave running on firefox using the instructions here: [URL]. However, when I try to open firefox with wine, I get this message.
"The file '/home/Downloads/Firefox Setup 5.0.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied from an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit."
I looked into this, but I don't understand what I'm doing well enough to assign file permission to this program.

General :: Wine Installation To Run Executable Files?

May 11, 2011

I recently got the information that Windows software do not run in Linux as such. In order to run these software (Running the software also includes installing the software by running the set-up executable file) I need to install 'wine' on my system and then run the set-up files from within this 'wine'. I therefore wish to install 'wine' on my system in order to run the corresponding Windows set-up files (which are executable files). I am running Linux Mint version 10 on my system.

General :: How To Stop Files Moved - From Windows Via USB Being Marked "executable"?

Sep 27, 2010

When I move files from Windows to Linux using a USB drive, all files are marked as executable. Then double clicking on a ".txt" file gets you the ridiculous dialog box asking whether you want to display the file or execute it. (NOTE: The /etc/fstab entry for the USB mount includes the "noexec" option already and it hasn't helped.) Now that my wife and daughters are moving files back and forth between the two OSs, I'm getting pestered for a solution to this and I haven't been able to track anything down. Yet.

What can one do -- presumably on the Windows side of the transfer -- to prevent these files from being marked executable? Or is it a hopeless problem caused by some dainbread decision made by a Windows developer?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Open An Executable File Because Of Executable Bit?

Jun 20, 2010

I am running into a snag on .exe files in Lucid. I have Wine installed, but I can not open the file as it is blocked from executing with a window popping up telling me that this file was blocked due to security reasons. I go into the files properties and try to change the permission but that does not help. Is there a way to get around this? Possibly in the terminal as root?

Ubuntu :: Getting Around The Executable Bit - Wine And Windows 95?

Jul 20, 2010

I have a copy of "Riven" for Windows 95 still laying around, and I decided to see if I could run it in WINE just for the hell of it. I got the following error when I tried to run the "Setup.exe" file (or any other executable on the CD-ROM, for that matter) using WINE:

Quote:

The file '/media/Riven1/Setup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.I read about the executable bit, and while I understand the security reasons for it being there, I would still like to know if there's a way to circumvent it, or even a workaround. I tried chmod on the exe file, but since it's on read only media, that didn't work. I'm running Lucid.

Efforts are largely going well however I've run into problems since reinstalling Wine. Previously I could execute a Windows executable by simply entering ./executable.exe in the bash shell but this no longer seems to work as now I have to include the "wine" command in front of the executable. how to configure Debian to automatically use Wine to execute using the ./executable.exe format?

Ubuntu Installation :: Packages Marked As Updated Actually Not Installed

May 8, 2011

I did a clean install of 11.04 this morning. Upon logging in, Update Manager appeared, telling me there were 67 packages to upgrade. I obliged, and the update progress window appeared, as usual. At this point I realized it was not a convenient time to install the updates. No progress had yet been made; Update Manager had not downloaded anything, the progress bar had not moved, and the status was "waiting". I canceled the update and closed Update manager. However, upon running it again, it thinks that it successfully installed all the packages. In the "Ubuntu Software Center" Update history, it shows all those packages as having been updated with a timestamp of when I canceled the update. Apt-get and aptitude will not update the packages either. It seems like the packages have been marked as updated even though no update was installed. How can I rectify this problem and get the package managers to actually install the updates?

Ubuntu Installation :: Deleting Recovery Partition Marked As Boot?

Sep 2, 2010

I have just bought a new computer and I want to partition it to be dual booting as I have done a few times in the past.

Currently (alternatively, see attached screenshot):

There are three partitions:
/dev/sda1: FAT16 DellUtility (takes very little space and is of no concern)
/dev/sda2: ntfs RECOVERY (takes up 17.58GB and is marked boot)
/dev/sda3: ntfs OS (the rest of the computer, on which windows is currently installed)

[Code].....

it is safe to delete the current boot partition. I am also not quite clear on when the recovery partition would be used and whether it is really all that necessary (18GB doing nothing seems like a lot to me). Should I make a system recovery media for windows before repartitioning? Also, I am not sure which type of ext partition to use. Finally, I am not sure how big to make the swap space. I think I recall the normal rule being twice the RAM (6GB RAM in my case), but 12GB swap space seems like a lot. Although I do sometimes run memory intensive programs (simulations for research). I normally use other computers for such simulations since they have far more RAM than my computer can possibly have even with a large swap space.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mount NTFS File System In Wine?

May 4, 2010

Trying to mount my NTFS file system (portable hard drive) so that is can be recognized by a program I have installed in wine (seagate manager). I've tried to change the mount point for the drive to /home/.wine/c_drive but that doesn't seem to do the trick, and messing around with the fstab file just results in error messages when I try to mount/unmount the drive.

who to change the mount point properly? /dev/sbd1 is my partition.

Either that or does anyone know how to configure wine so that it will find my drive? I've tried adding an e: drive to the drives tab and mapped it to mediaSimons' Seagate (partition label), but that doesn't seem to do the trick either.
