Around 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

Then on the other 2 partitions I have the manufacturer recovery partition (which I am not sure I should remove...), and then a partition for storage and files. Now I want an Arch Linux installation on the hard drive, but obviously I cannot create a new primary partition because I already have 4. I found out that linux can run from a logical partition (which you can have multiple of)..However I do not want to format my Ubuntu partition and I'd prefer to keep the data on there all intact. At the end of the drive I have 32 gigs of free space still contained in the logical volume group. I want to remove it from the LVG but this is on one device. Supposedly there is a way to do this, pvresize and fdisk.

That's normal. pvresize "just" updates the PV header and VG metadata.

Yes. That was mentioned in my reply: "Then shrink the partition in the partition table."
You can use fdisk or any other partition table editor for this. Some don't support resizing a partition. In that case, you can delete and create a smaller one. If doing the delete/create dance, you *must* create the new partition on the same cylinder boundary as the current one to preserve the current data.
Ive read from every source on LVM its not possible to do this. Why on earth would any Linux developer put LVM on a single drive system by default? Were they even paying attention? I dont mean to go off on a rant but if there are multiple drives LVM makes sense. However if you only have one large drive LVM holds your system hostage and you have to crawl thru the pit of hell to get it back.
I understand you have a choice in the matter when you install Fedora but its really the worst possible choice for default. Many newcomers to Linux run into this problem with LVM. If you cannot resize LVG's the software should have never been put into a Linux distro in the first place.
After fixing drive partition numbers, I got the following error from cfdisk: Code: FATAL ERROR: Bad logical partition 6: enlarged logical partitions overlap Press any key to exit cfdisk However, I can see all my partitions with fdisk and gparted, I can mount and use all of them.I used the following guide to fix the drive numbers order: Reorder partition drive numbers in linux | LinkedBits Does somebody know whet is cfdisks problem and how can I fix it?

Basically what I'm wanting to do is have it so whenever a logical volume gets below a certain constraint (10Gb's) ie. it only has that much left - I want to automatically resize it to add 20 GB's. Obviously this can be done rather easily manually, and with a bit of python hacking it can be done programmatically but since this is for production use I was wondering if there was something a bit more fluid. Since this server is I/O intensive ZFS implemented via FUSE is not an option and neither is the still unstable BtrFS.

I now want to add a OSX to my laptop in tripple booth. I did shrink the windows partition and now I realized that all my partitions are primary and cannot create a new one with the space I shrink from windows.Is it possible to merge ubuntu and its swap into extended/logical partitions so I can create a new primary for Mac OS X?
extended sata partition shrunk at 15 partition limit, how to re-enlarge i hit the 15 partition limit, forgetting it now exists for sata drives, thinking i would add more. upon creation of the 15th, it squished the end of the extended partition to meet the last logical partition, leaving a large unallocated portion after the extended partition, which seemingly nothing can be done with, just sat being wasted space. i have since deleted a few of those partitions, but so far have still failed to find a way to recoup the unallocated space back into the extended partition.

if necessary, i'll do it the painful long winded way of backing up and starting the extended partition again from scratch, but i really rather wouldnt have to do that. i'm sure there must be a way of telling the extended partition to once again reach the end of the drive.
I am not really sure if the title makes any sense or if it even possible. Basically I am currently triple booting with Mac osx on the first partition windows 7 on the second and ubuntu linux on the 3rd with a swap partition. So basically on my 2TB harddrive

The last partition is formatted as ntfs using Gparted, windows cannot detect it. The windows disk partitioner shows the swap and ntfs partitions as unformatted. I can unformat the space and use the windows partition to add format it as ntfs but it would format the linux swap partition as well. I am worried that it could potentially screw up everything on my harddrive. My question is. What do I need to do to get the ntfs parition recognized by windows (should I use the windows partitioner)?
I want to convert a vfat partition into an ext4 partition. This is on my wife's machine and she deleted the Windoze partition as she now prefers Linux. Here is the (edited) output from fdisk -l:-

I've got a server that needs more space. To achieve this we added space (by extending the VMware disk attached to it).Normally this isn't an issue, because we just add an new partition and LVM it from there, but this host predates our deployment of LVM everywhere.
Our current theory is that the unallocated sectors can not be assigned because they aren't part of the extended partition, and thus ... we go in a circle.So what i believe the way forward is to extend sda4 so that i can then create an sda10 inside of it. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I was thinking gparted may do the trick ... but being a server i'm in runlevel3, with no X...

I installed fedora 13 64 bit and it works great but I encountered several issues when setting up guest OS with KVM. The problem seems to be related to selinux. But let me first ask question about logical volume. By Default fedora created logical volumes:

But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?

You can actually ignore the flag for the swap as "boot." That was me just messing around trying to get it to work. I've removed that flag. Not sure how the question of boot affects all of this...maybe it factors in somehow.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI somehow messed up my filesystem. I installed Ubuntu directly with LVM. This created an extended partition including a logical one. When I run out of space, I just increased my space (through VMware) and then added a new PRIMARY partition.
Then I added this one to the volumegroup and increased the logical volume. After I did this a few times, there were no longer any primary partitions allowed (only 4). Then I resized the FS, resized the logical volume, resized the volume group, and removed the physical volume. Now I'm no longer able to create an extended volume (only one) but it's not at the end (there are other primary partitions behind this one at the disk), so I'm not able to create some logical volumes.
What is the best possibility to add some space to the LVM and being able to do this a few times in the future again?

So the order on the disk is: sda1 | sda2 (extended) | sda5 (logical referred in sda2) | sda4 | free space
Does it matter that there is type "Linux" for sda4 or can I without damaging the lvm just change it (with cfdisk) to "Linux LVM"?
Two days ago I want to expand the free room for my C: partition on my laptop, i thought that just shrink the D: partition and expand the C: and the problem solved, but it's not solved, the C: remains and can't be expanded. so i merge the D: again,but the D: status become an extended partition
After all, next morning I boot into Ubuntu and my D: are not available in "Places" menu in Ubuntu just the C: partition, so I boot from Win7 and run CHKDSK /f to my D: partition, but it's gave me no effects
