Ubuntu Installation :: Chain-loading Windows 7 After 10.04?

Jul 10, 2010

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 it installed and chain-loaded correctly however I installed it on partition that was too small so I used gParted to copy the files 1:1 to a freed up partition. The result was it copied fine but the Grub file became messed up.

I had to manually reinstall Grub2 from the LiveCD and the Linux was starting up fine, however now I'm unable to boot to Windows. Is there an easy way to reinstall/re-chain the Windows bootloader so its able to chain-load from Grub.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Installer Does Not Loading

Mar 21, 2010

I use to have vista and ubuntu on my PC. Yesterday accidentally I created a new partition "table" the point is that I erased all my partitions on "MyDisk". After a while I decided to re-install ubuntu ( 9.10 karmic koala ) and take advantage of the situation and upgrade to Windows7. Since I already had the ubuntu cd, I installed it first, then downloaded the Win7 cd to install it. The problem is that Windows7 installer doesn't load.

All I get is:
<<BLACK SCREEN>>
Grub loading.
<<BLACK SCREEN>>
underscore
Ubuntu logo
ubuntu login

So I don't know whats wrong. Right now my disk looks like this:
MyDisk >
MyDisk1 ntfs ( For windows 7 )
MyDisk2 > extended (using linux with 2 more partitions: ext4 and linux-swap)

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Destroys Grub And It Stops Loading?

Feb 15, 2010

I installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu on the remaining disk. However, each time I go back to windows, windows decides to destroy grub and it stops loading, then I have to use a rescue disk and do a grub-install again. It's annoying to have to do this everytime I go to windows. Is there a way to avoid windows to destroy grub? Or install grub on a place windows cannot touch?

Ubuntu Installation :: Chain GRUB From Truecrypt And Its Bootloader (multiboot Alongside XP)

Aug 23, 2010

I want Truecrypt to ask for password for Windows XP as usual but with the standard [ESC] option, on selecting that, i.e via Escape key, I want it to find the grub for the (unencrypted) Ubuntu install. I've installed Windows XP on the 120Gb hard drive of a Toshiba NB100 netbook then partitioned to make room for Ubuntu 10.04 and installed that after the Windows XP install. When I encrypt Windows XP, Truecrypt will overwrite the grub entry in the master boot record (MBR), I believe (?) and I won't be able to choose between XP and Ubuntu anymore. So I need to restore it back.

My setup:

Partitions:
Windows XP, NTFS (to be encrypted with Truecrypt), 40Gb
/boot (Ext4, 1Gb)
Ubuntu swap, 4Gb

[code]....

The key area of the problem is how to instruct Truecrypt when escape key is pressed, and how the Grub/Ubuntu can be made visible to the truecrypt bootloader to find it, when the esc key is pressed. Also knowing as chaining.

Debian Installation :: Windows Get Stuck On Logo Screen Or Safe Mode Loading Files

Nov 19, 2014

Naturally a Windows user, because all of my computers were with pre-installed Windows and I was young.. and I get used to it..In the time of.. growing up I became programmer and learnt how bad is actually Windows coded. Not only that.. Linux has better support for developers.So.. I was Windows user till yesterday. I finally decided to work on Installing Linux or more specifically - Debian.I love everything part of the GNU - GIMP, GTK+, Gedit, GCC...

Well I can't use my PC, both of my operation systems are non-functional.Windows get stuck (which is something completely typical for Microsoft stuff) on Windows logo screen, or safe mode loading files..Debian installation is messy.Firstly I installed Debian 6.0 on a Virtual DVD Disc mounted. I followed the installation process strictly and move forward to Debian startup. It asked me for account. root as "username" and the password as "password" didn't work so I logged in as "localhost" normal user.

However.. I started to realize that I actually also had to install the Graphical Environment in order to have Debian with the desired GNOME Desktop.. I went to aptitude to install the Graphic Environment Package but it said that I have no root rights.. I tried to log-in again, using the correct details but failed.I tried to get in, using the sudo command, but the sudo command also didn't work. Of course.. since I can't install packages, I can't either install sudo."su -" or "su" also prompt me to select a password which I apparently have no clue of.

Then I went to Debian Recovery, because there I was logged as root. It also pointed out that "Root Account is locked". I went to install packages finally.. But when the installation started to proceed It asked me for disk insertion in a specific folder? There I got lost completely.

Ubuntu :: Windows Loading Pages Faster Using Firefox?

Oct 1, 2010

Two very simmilar laptops connected to the same WiFi router loading the same web pages. Firefox on Windows does that for 3 secons, while Firefox on Ubuntu needs 1-3 minutes to load the same page. What could be the reason for this? Any idea how to fix it? The laptop with Ubuntu runs 10.04 LTS (lucid), Firefox is 3.6.10 and on any other WiFi network it loads the web pages really faster but why is much slower than Windows now? When testing the speed on URL...Ubuntu loads times faster than Windows. The WiFi router has been reseted. Firefox has been started in -safe-mode, both didn't help.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Reset Webcam (Phillips SPC 900 NC) Without Loading Windows Xp

Jul 14, 2010

My webcam works AWESOME when it works. However, occasionally it produces no video for Ubuntu based applications. Cheese, aMSN, Skype or anything else for Ubuntu Lucid.

I have tried power off & cold booting. Moving from one USB port to another, warm booting etc...

The only way to make it work instantly is to boot into Windows XP and access the Webcam. Then upon rebooting to Ubuntu the cam works perfectly again.

It's not a matter of Ubuntu finding and recognizing the cam. It always does and TRYS to activate the cam (the led comes on when loading any cam application) but it produces no video.

Is there a command I can use to force a RESET of the video device so I can stop loading Windows?

Ubuntu :: Grub Installed On MBR - Ability To Chain Load?

Apr 17, 2010

I have created a boot floppy for an old machine. That machine has GRUB installed on its MBR and I would like to be able to chain load to that in the case where the floppy has been accidentally left in (in much the same way that the install CDs do for Ubuntu). If I use:

Code:
rootnoverify (hd0)
makactive
chainloader +1

GRUB tells me this is an illegal device name. If I provide a partition number (e.g. hd0,0) then it is happy, but attempts to find the loader in the partition, not the MBR. Since the descriptions of "root" and "rootnoverify" both specify a device, rather than a partition.

Debian :: Installing Armhf Cross Tool Chain

Apr 25, 2016

I tried to install the cross toolchain for armhf but, apparently, I borked something. I tried to follow the directions here : [URL] .... but he lost me at "The key fingerprint is: 084C 6C6F 3915 9EDB 6796 9AA8 7DE0 8967 1804 772E (you will need to install curl in a bare chroot)".

I have successfully installed the toolchain according to the gnuarmeclipse method and don't recall any references to "chroot"; it was pretty straight forward. That machine took a dump and I need to start over. I would like to install the toolchain without Eclipse getting in the way (and hogging memory).

I had trouble setting up a multiple hop tunnel for chaining port forwarding through my firewall machine on the same subnet as the db. My first attempt involved two port forwards, on localhost and on the firewall machine, which didn't work for me. This approach I found at URL... involved constructing an end to end connection to the db via the firewall machine.

CentOS 5 :: Reject-with Tcp-reset In OUTPUT Chain With Kernel 164.x

Nov 6, 2009

I usually have something like

iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 113 -j REJECT --reject-with tcp-reset

in my firewall near the top, as I dont want the servers to generate ident requests and I don't want services (mail and ftp...) stalling when waiting for ident replies on clients with ident port filtered. This worked fine until the 164 kernel series.

Tested both 2.6.18-164.2.1.el5 and 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5. The rule gets matched, but the rst is never returned to the application so it stalls in every case. Booted back to 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 and it works like a charm. I see no netfilter related patches in the 164 series that weren't present in 128.
