I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Z600 with a two disc raid system. Is there a way to solve this without using the alternate cd (where the data files seem to be corrupted). The regular 10.04 cant find any drives on which to install, the 10.04 alternate cd�s all have corrupted files. I have tried downloading the .iso from two mirrors as well as from .torrent, all have data problems. The HASH checksums are fine, only the data on the burned discs are wrong. I have also tried using a USB install, but there are problems there aswell. At the moment I have win 7 on the disc as on the other partition, and have been using Ubuntu 10.10 (that is now an unbootable broken system), but have to downgrade to 10.04 becasue of software requirements.

I was recently given two hard drives that were used as a raid (maybe fakeraid) pair in a windows XP system. My plan was to split them up and install one as a second HD in my desktop, and load 9.10 x64 on it, and use the other for mythbuntu 9.10. As has been noted elsewhere, the drives aren't recognized by the 9.10 installer, but removing dmraid gets around this, and installation of both ubuntu and mythbuntu went fine. On both systems after installation however, the systems broke during update, giving an "read-only file system" error and no longer booting.
Running fsck from the live cd gives the error: fsck: fsck.isw_raid_member: not found fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.isw_raid_member for /dev/sdb and running fsck from 9.04 installed on the other hard drive gives an error like:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
In both cases I setup the drives with the ext4 filesystem. There's probably more that I'm forgetting... it seems likely to me that this problem is due to some lingering issue with the RAID setup they were in. I doubt its a hardware issue since I get the same problem with the different drives in different boxes.
I'm trying to install GRUB2 on root partition under RAID 5. I tried using the alternate CD, but installation failed. Now I'm trying under the live CD and grub-install ... but I'm being told it can't find the device even though /dev/sda2 (root partition) and /dev/sda are mounted.I have 4 discs, each with a swap partition (/dev/sdX1) and a root partition (/dev/sdX2).
I have a raid 0 setup with 2 x 1TB drives. I have an ASUS P8P67 LE motherboard and am using Interl RST for the Raid setup. I'm utterly ignorant of raid and therefore forgive any mistakes... I already had windows 7 installed and was attempting to dual boot ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu from CD. The raid was picked up properly as only one drive by ubuntu. So it picked up the windows MBR and the main windows partition. I resized the main partition and used the "install ubuntu and windows 7 side by side" option. Installation went fine but once I restarted the PC I was welcomed by a grub rescue screen with the message: "error: no such device e196.....". Edit: I used the Windows 7 disc to repair the windows bootloader so I can now boot into Windows 7.
Before doing so I used gparted on the live cd to check the partitions on the drives. The only ones present were the MBR and windows one. So ubuntu seemingly didn't install... Although GRUB did... I was advised by someone on the ubuntu IRC chat to avoid trying to reinstall ubuntu at that point just in case there was an error in the partitioning process. I've since checked the state of the partitions from within windows and there's the MBR partiton, the windows partiton AND the partition that I created for ubuntu... 965MB of the partition that I created is listed as used space as well...

I have a Windows 7 installation with a boot partition on the RAID. I also want to have a dual boot with openSUSE 11.2 but I don't know how to set correctly my partitions. I have some unallocated space next to the Windows C: partition. When I try to install openSUSE it makes a suggestion to create some partitions that i don't need and don't want, and even doesn't mount them. It also creates a / 80GB, /boot 36MB, swap 2GB and /home 20GB partitions, so I am in lack of free space.
I don't know how to create screenshots during installation. Maybe I'll try to reinstall later and pick some screens in english, because my system language is bulgarian.
Am installing Fedora 10 on an old but good server that used to be a windows box. It has 2 sata disk raid level 1 on adaptec 2410SA card. Disks are clean no info even did a low level format and recreated RAID.. twice DVD boots and installs os on raid array and reports success. new volume appears under computer icon but cannot be mounted after reboot attempt reports Reading physical volumes. This may take a while... (it doesn't)

and then a blinking cursor with keyboard echo but its just copying reboot with install DVD does not show previous (unmountable) disk image and repeat of above process increases operator need for alcohol have "disable write cache for drives" as I found that is a post but after fedora install.I do not know what grub is for instance but once linux is booted (on other computers) I can muddle through ok in terminal mode.
I have a HP Workstation Z600 with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 as graphic card. I have installed a ubuntu 32 bits 9.10, then upgraded to 10.04 and 10.10. Grub shows me 2 installed kernel : 2.6.31-22 and 2.6.35-22. When I boot with kernel 2.6.35, the startup hangs. I can just reboot the computer. When I boot with 2.6.31, ubuntu starts up, but the screen is not recognized, and I can just run in 800x600. I tried to install the nvidia driver which is provided with the distribution, but no luck (there is an error message).
So I tried to install the official NVIDIA driver, but it asks me to install linux source. This one is available for kernel 2.6.35 but not anymore for 2.6.31.Does someone has an idea of all my problems, and if possible, how to solve them ?
I have installed Ubuntu on my m1530 since 8.04 and currently dual boot Win7 and 10.10. I would like to dual boot on my PC, but I have run into a problem. I am not a pro at Ubuntu, but this problem I can not solve by reading forums like I have in the past.
I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.
I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.
I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.
My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)
Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.
I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.
Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]

I'm trying to install 11.04 and setup software raid on two hdd's in the process for the home partition. Even in the manual setup I don't really see any option to do this.

It's been a real battle, but I am getting close.I won't go into all the details of the fight that I have had, but I've almost made it to the finish line. Here is the set up. ASUS Z8PE-D18 mother board 2 CPU, 8 Gig Ram. I recently added an OCZ Agility SSD, defined a raid 1 virtual disk on the 1 terabyte WD HDD drives, which will holds all of my user data, the SSD is for executables.The bios is set to AHCI. Windows 7 installed fine, recognizes the raid VD just fine.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 by first booting into try and mode, then opening a terminal and issuing a "sudo dmraid -ay" command. Then performing the install. I told it to install the raid components, and told it to let me specify the partitions manually. When setting up the partitions, I told it to use the free space I set aside on the SSD from the Windows 7 install as ext4 and to mount root there. Ubuntu installed just fine, grub2 comes up just fine, and Windows 7 boots with out a hitch, recognizing the mirrored partition as I indicated previously. When I tell grub to boot linux however, it pauses and I get the "no block devices found" message. It will then boot, but it does not recognize the raid array. After Ubuntu starts up I can run "dmraid -ay" and it recognizes the raid array, but shows the two component disks of the raid array as well. It will not allow the component disks to be mounted, but they show up which is annoying. (I can live with that if I have to)
I have fixed a similar problem before by setting up a dmraid script in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top ... following the instructions found at the bottom of this blog:[URL].. To recap: My problem is that after grub2 fires up Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Lucid Lynx), it pauses, and I get "no block devices found" It then boots but does not recognize the raid array untill I manually run "dmraid -ay". I've hunted around for what to do but I have not found anything. It may be some timing issue or something, but I am so tired of beating my head against this wall.
I have a server with an Intel S875WP1-E motherboard and 4 HD of 400Gb each. If i use the raid utility from the motherboard it doesn't appear during disk detection, so i disabled it. I've rebooted and launch installer from the DVD and it displays correctly 4 HD. I've configured them, installed the OS and installed GRUB in MBR (grub install /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd). But when i reboot it asks me to switch for a correct system disk.
I've look into BIOS configuration. If i make a raid array using the bios utility, i can choose any array in boot device priority, but if there is no array defined, i can't select anythig (but the DVD drive).
I tried install Centos 5.2 (i386) on Dell PowerEge 2950 server with SAS RAID disk (RAID 5 on PERC 6/i created from six HDD, 1 TB each). I never installed Centos on a disk over 2 TB. I find out that i need use gpt instead mbr. I tried use rescue mode + parted but after rebooting I got message "Can't boot from from GPT partition" whet tried install. But when the space is partitioned by installer, I can't boot up.I got msg PBR not found. My ask is: "Can I boot directly from GPT partition? If yes how do it?" Or even better "How to install centos 5.2 on disk bigger than 2 TB?"
What are the things that i need to do to be able to install CentOS 5.3 on RAID 1 drive.I have tried to install other OS like Ubuntu 9.10 and lower and they all work fine.Problem is that, during the initial installation, it could not find any drive therefore i could not proceed with the installation.
I have a custom server built with Intel motherboard and RADI 10. The RAID controller is on the motherboard. I'm about to install fedora 11 x86 64 bit on it. I installed RC1, and never touched the disks that were raided previously, and the attached image is what i see for my raid array that was previously working fine.

I'm working on a new server and it has an Nvidia SATA array controller with 2 250Gb SATA drives configured in a hardware array. When the first screen comes up I'm entering the option Linux DD for it to prompt me for the drivers but nothing ever happens. The screen says that it's loading a SATA driver for about 15 minutes and then the screen clears and has a plus sign cursor on a black screen. What am I doing wrong? The only driver that came with the HP server are for Redhat 4 and 5 and SUSE, will any of those actually work?
I'm having some (well, a lot actually) of problems trying to get OpenSUSE 11.2 installed on my home PC. I am attempting to set up a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 installed on an bios Nvidia RAID 0.I was able to shrink the partition in Windows, and rebooted onto the net install for OpenSUSE (the MD5 validated DVD install failed multiple burns with "Repository not found"). I get into the graphical installer portion with no problems off the net install CD. However, the installer is not recognizing that there is an existing RAID 0. It lists the 2 SATA disks in the RAID separately. I can click on SDA1, and both SDB and SDB1 and it shows the disks, but does not recognize any existing partitions. If I click on SDA I get an immediate segfault in YaST and drop back to the text mode installer menu. It is loading the nv_sata module just fine.
From forum searches and google it seems that this is not usually a problem. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 with the Nvidia Nforce 570 chipset running an AMD X2 64 3800+. Removing the stripeset and redoing it as Linux software RAID is not an option, I do not have enough space for a total backup/restore. Anything I do has to be nondestructive to the existing Windows installation.I really want to have a linux installation but between the DVD installer failing and now this issue I am about ready to give up on it.
Ive created two RAID0 partitions on my drives, a 500GB and a 60GB. Im trying to install Ubuntu on the smaller partition (ive already put Win 7 on the larger one) and every time when i get right to the last part of installation it says Grub couldnt be installed. "the grub package failed to install in arget......."
During SLES11 installation I had to provide additional driver for ServeRAID-M1015 hardware RAID controller because linux didn't see any disks. Now I have to upgrade SLES11 to SLES11SP1 which may include installation of new kernel.
Questions : 1. What happens with this RAID driver after installing new kernel ? 2. Will Linux box start up after installing new kernel ?
Our server is a CybertronPC I2XV9080 Imperium Tower. It is equipped with a supermicro X7DVL-I Motherboard and Quad 750 GB SATA2 RAID edition hard drives in a raid 5 array. We tried to install Centos on the Raid5 array with Device-Mapper as the LVM. In the BIOS SATA Raid was enabled and the ICH RAID code base option was set to [Intel].

I have a client with a pair of Supermicro 6025B-T servers that he wants to have Ubuntu 10.10 64bit Server running on for VM/Cloud experimenting. He needs these to be set up RAID 10. I can go into the Adaptec utility and make the array and make it bootable and get to the point in the installer where it asks me if I want to use the SATA array - then it gets to the partitioning screen and the array is nowhere to be found.
I have two SAS RAID controller cards in a Dell server in slots 2 & 3, both with an array hanging off them. I went to install a third card into slot 1, but then when it boots it says two of my sd's have bad magic number in the super-block and it wants me to create an alternative one, which I don't want to do. If i remove the new card, the server boots perfectly like it did before I added the new card. Is the new card trying to control stuff that isn't hooked up to it because its in slot 1, so its confusing RHEL?
The installer can't see my raid controller (I assume) as I'm getting the following error:"Error opening /dev/mapper/isw_jbhgjgjj_Vol0: No such device or address"It just sees them as 4 individual drives: sda, sdb, sdc and sdd.Please note that I have set up the RAID 5 in the controller bios interface and the image name is Vol0, which it seems that it tries to load but for some particular reason it can't.I have also tried different bios settings and nothing worked.
My problem is that I'm trying to install CentOS 5.4 x86_64 DVD ISO on Supermicro X7SBI server with installed Adaptec RAID 3405 controller.
I created RAID 5 array and is working fine (adaptec status says Optimal) but I can't install CentOS to that array (1.5TB size).

I'm asked for a driver, which I have downloaded from Adaptec site and extracted contents to USB drive (in installation found as /sba1) which has now a lot of IMG and some ISO files on it.
I try to load (I simplified names) RHEL5.img, CENTOS.img... with x64 names (one exact name: aacraid driverdisk-CentOS-x86_64.img) and I always get the error message: "No devices of the appropriate type were found on this driver disk"
This is going on for a week now and I can't find the right driver or something I'm doing wrong to get install done.

I've just finished booting my system via Live CD, and installing 10.04-1 to existing partitions on a hardware RAID. The install went fine but when I rebooted I didn't get past the BIOS output screens.I used four existing partitions for the install: /home (MyRAID3, which was kept as-is), / (MyRAID2, which was reformatted) , /boot (MyRAID1, also reformatted) and swap.
