Ubuntu :: GDM Broken - Gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable To Load File '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No Such File Or Directory

Sep 1, 2011

I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :

Code: sudo gdm start into the command prompt, hoping that I would be able to start things manually. Instead, it spat out this: Code:

gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No such file or directory.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to find users : no seat-id found.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Gdm Display: display lasted 0.070467 seconds

The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.

OpenSUSE Install :: Select The Catalan (Valencian) Translation - 47 Locales?

May 1, 2011

Let me introduce this topic before I ask my question. When selecting the system language, there are different options that are based on the ISO-639 standard, which defines a code locale for each language and country. This allow us to select, for example, pt_BR (Brazilian Portuguese) or pt_PT (Portuguese form Portugal) as the language system. Then, if two variants of a language are in a different country, the ISO-639 can differentiate them this way.

But there are languages, for example Catalan, that have two variants in the same country. Then, the ISO-639 cannot differentiate them. Here is where the BCP-47 standard appears [1]. It adds a subtag to identify variants or other codifications (like sr and sr@latin) of a language. In the Catalan case, standard Catalan uses the ca_ES locale code, and the Valencian variant uses the ca_ES-valencia locale code (the subtag is -valencia). On systems based on Debian is possible to select this variants using the @ modifier. Then, if I define this LANG environment:

The translation shown on the system is the ca@valencia (for example, in GNOME). GNOME is already translated into Catalan (Valencian) [2]. As well as KDE,, VirtualBox, Firefox and many others. Here is my question: How can I select the Catalan (Valencian) translation (not the standard Catalan one) when using openSUSE? I have tried modifying the /etc/sysconfig/language file, and defining the rc_lang to:

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Create Japanese Locale: Get A Segmentation Fault On Generating Locale?

Oct 13, 2010

Maverick 10.10 is unable to create Japanese locales on my wife's laptop (Acer Aspire 3000). This machine previously had no such problem. The install is a fresh install, since the machine froze during the upgrade (no fault of Ubuntu's). A possible complication is that it froze several times more during the install, and I have gone through many recovery boots and iterations of dpkg configure. All relevant packages are installed, I believe. Everything else works. Through System, Administration, Language Support, I have installed all components of English and Japanese. Currently English is selected. Japanese should appear in the list but does not. Japanese text appears properly, and I can write in Japanese,But all the menus are in English. Fine by me, but my wife will want Japanese when she uses the computer again (not soon). This mostly likely is a glibc/libc6 problem, as far as I can tell. I can't find any other Ubuntu user with this problem recently. And now, some outputs:1. dpkg-reconfigure locales

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
Generating locales...
en_AG.UTF-8... done

OpenSUSE :: The No Such File Or Directory Warning Is Correct?

May 12, 2011

When I learn shell script, I want to add my own PATH variable to system previous variables. I find that my linux has the below PATH variables (in the end of this message). It shows 'No such file or directory' although I verify that all the directories exist. Some directories are empty indeed. This will result that warning?

I want to make the present PATH variables correct before I add mine.

I have tried several different font but all have the same issue. Does anyone know what the error means?

I've tried to "repair installed system" and "rescue" with my openSUSE 11.1 DVD -- it won't even acknowledge (as it were) the presence of 11.2 or the system on the other hard drive (though it does recognise the partitions). The PCLinuxOS 2009 KDE and GNOME live CDs will redo the MBR of installed systems (at least, as far I know, PCLinuxOS is one of systems). In my experience, the 11.2 live CD won't. I was hoping the 11.1 DVD would. What to do?

I can get into failsafe mode sometimes. I've replaced the harddrive and installed it again = same issue. I've redownloaded and burned a different DVD, verifying the checksum, and running the "check media" option = same issue. I've done a repair install = same issue. I've removed the added Ethernet and modem cards and reinstalled = same issue. I've deleted all partitions from previous install and reinstalled = same issue. Currently, I just defraged the HDD on a windows machine and am running the install once more (one a completely different machine) but what's going on here? I need 11.2 for Clonezilla SE (not 11.3)
