Ubuntu :: Firefox Is Slow With Flash Sites?

Mar 14, 2011

Yesterday I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 . Everything is fresh new but my I can feel some lack of speed in the desktop and sometimes if you look really hard on the monitor you can see that screen is trembling a little bit. Not long before, the system freeze up and I had to manually force reboot.

I think that the root of the evil might be the integrated graphics from Intel Core i5 2500K processor. What's your opinion ?

Ubuntu Security :: Some Sites Blocked - Accessing Some Sites - Amazon Paypal And Bigstockphoto Really Slow

Feb 9, 2011

In the past week or so I've noticed some weird network behaviour. I find accessing some sites such as Amazon, Paypal, and Bigstockphoto really slow. Sometimes the page will not load at all. Other sites are fine. The problem sites are not a problem for others on my LAN at home. When I try to open the problem sites, I can see in Firestarter blocked connections coming from 2.1(8/9).xxx.xxx on various ports such as 36007. This only happens for the problem sites. I attached a typical output from firestarter.

This happens with Firfeox or Chrome. Using Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Lookup Of Web Sites

Nov 9, 2010

For a while now I've got a problem when surfing the internet. Everythings fine for let's say 15 minutes and then all of a sudden it takes about 1 minute to load a -random- page, once it has loaded, everthing's fine again. Transmission does not seem to have this problem. I'll double check this. Looking thru the forum I found the following "solutions". None of which has worked for me up to now:

- disable ipv6 in firefox
- set method under network manager to "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only" and use google or OpenDNS dns servers
- change resolv.conf (comparable to the second one I guess)

Ubuntu :: Loading So Very Slow When Accessing Web Sites?

Apr 27, 2011

I have just installed ubuntu 10.1 along side my windows xp. It installed nicely and boots up promptly. When I try to go to a web site, it takes forever to load. It can take up to 1 minute to load a page. Why is that. I thought that Linux was supposed to be faster. When I go back to windows, I don't have this problem.

I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and have wired internet connection.

Some sites (particularly https) take very long time to load . Sometimes I get "Page is taking a long time to load . Reload the page later" message.

Now , this is happening for some http webpages also.

This is not a problem with browser.

I have firefox , chrome , chromium and konqueror installed.

Also I can access all these sites properly from windows so it is not problem with my internet connection either.

OpenSUSE Network :: Browsing Secure Sites Is Very Slow

May 21, 2011

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit) on my system and am experiencing severe performance issues with websites using https (any site using https). Page loads over https take anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It's the same issue posted here Secure sites load slow or not at all -- there was no confirmed solution.

- My router/hardware configuration has not changed in a long time and I've run Ubuntu, Arch Linux, and Windows XP on the same machine within the last year and have not had any issues.
- I also have a laptop running Arch Linux (kernel 2.6.38) and this problem does not occur using Firefox 4 or Chrome. To add to the madness this problem occurs while running Firefox 4 inside a Windows 7 guest via virtual box, but NOT while running IE 8 inside the same guest.
- This issue occurs using Firefox 4, Chromium, Opera, Konqueror, and Arora.
- I've disabled ipv6 in Firefox via about:config.
- I've disabled ipv6 in yast and have attempted to use both the "ifup" and "networkmanager" options.
- I am not using a proxy server.
- I've attempted the fix posted in the Ubuntu forums for a similar problem [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Banking Site is very slow.

Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox Painfully Slow After Upgrade (Not DNS)

Jan 2, 2010

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, and Firefox is painfully slow to use. Changing between already loaded tabs takes almost a second. Scrolling through a loaded tab is also slow and jerky. Other programs (e.g. Thunderbird, or just browsing the filesystem) also seem slower when Firefox is running.

I'm running Firefox 3.5.6. My PC is Compaq Presario 2200 laptop (about four years old) with 768 MB RAM. As another data point, I also have the most recent version of Linux Mint installed on the same PC, running Firefox 3.5.3, with no problems. I've searched, and some problems have apparently been due to DNS problems, but I have problems when I'm offline (wifi physically removed), looking at webpages saved on my disk, which are already fully loaded, so it's not a DNS problem. I did try steps 1 - 7

Ubuntu :: Firefox Not Working On Some Sites?

Apr 12, 2010

I'm using a 64-bit machine Ubuntu 9.10, and Firefox 3.5.9 for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100402 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.9) This problem has actually been going on since I started using Ubuntu. Firefox works for most things, but certain sites, many of them are ones you have to log into, but many other sites I log into work just fine. The first one which did not work was bigcharts.com. No login necessary. When I try to get a chart (stock) the page reloads with an error that I have to enter a symbol. On some sites I put in my username and password and the page just seems to reset. These sites work fine with forefox 3.5.9 on Windows Vista, and work with epiphany on Ububtu.

I've installed 10.10 yesterday on my old HP Pavillion ze2000 as dual boot with windowsXP and the wireless was working normally, I've updated everything it asked to update, rebooted a few times due to some of the updates. Today when I turned it on it was connecting normally to the router, though when I opened mozilla or tried to ping the router IP on the network tools neither have worked. Couldn't open any site on mozilla or ping any ip although it says I'm connected to my wireless router as it would normally. When I open into the XP my firefox there works just fine.

Fedora :: Firefox Certain Sites Text & Graphics?

May 16, 2010

On certain sites like this one and Sears, after about 30 seconds the screen goes mostly white with a few black spots and the cursor turns into a big white square... for a few seconds. Afterwards, the site mostly returns, but all text on the screen is unreadable. It's not fuzzy, just weird, non-discernible symbols. 4/5 it goes back to normal if I log out and back in, though it does over and over if I revisit the same sites. It's been going on since about Monday.

Software :: Firefox: Password Protection Disabled For Some Sites?

Sep 1, 2010

I use Firefox's built-in password saving utility, which is great. However, for some Web sites, I never get the option to save the password. Googling indicates that Firefox somehow gives Web sites a means of disabling password-saving.

How do I disable this "feature"? (Preferably without installing a plug-in.) It's irritating. I should get to decide whether or not I want passwords saved, not some stupid Web Master who thinks he knows what is best for the world.

Fedora :: FC13 - Firefox Crashes With Java Sites / Sort It?

Jun 1, 2010

I just installed FC13 and am having a problem with Java sites in Firefox. Everything is a fresh installation from the LiveCD (Gnome) and I'm dual booting with XP.

My laptop is an older Presario 2170us / 2G Celeron / 512 Ram / 40 G HDD.

If I go to the preferences of Firefox and disable Java, I don't have the issue but I can't open sites that are Java-intensive, such as AOL.

Once I re-inable Java and open Firefox, as soon as I get to AOL, I am dumped out of the Gnome GUI to the plain text list of startup items, then returned to the FC login screen and then I get back to the desktop.
When I open Firefox again, I get a page about the failure to open AOL... but I don't restore it...instead, I open a new site (such as this Forum), then close Firefox and reopen it.... but when I go to AOL, it happens all over.

As a recent (almost) convert from Ubuntu, I'd like to solve this. I used FC10 on my laptop but had too many SE-Linux issues (I couldn't do much without generating an error), so I went back to Ubuntu. I tried FC11 and FC12 but still had some problems. Now I'm trying FC13 and like what I'm seeing so far...except for what appears to be a Java issue in Firefox.

OpenSUSE :: Firefox Freezes At Sites That Have Flash Content After Suspend?

May 9, 2011

Every time after I resume from suspend, firefox freezes up to 7sec at "flashed" sites. That is very annoying. If I disable the adobe flash plugin, it is smooth without flash. If I restart my laptop, everything goes flawlessly. It did not if I restart the X service. This also affects the chromium on both the smooth scroll and the freezing at flashed sites. Additional information: Opensuse11.4 32-bit KDE.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nfs Locking Files - Cannot Open For Editing, Or Open Firefox / Thunderbird?

Dec 12, 2010

Server - Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts
Client - Kubuntu 10.10

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:

"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:

Unknown User

Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem. Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

relevant entry in /etc/fstab:
server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:
/nfs/dan/Documents client(rw)

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To FC12 - Access Port 631 Through Firefox Wouldn't Open

Feb 8, 2010

I only began using Linux with the release of FC8. I've upgraded into every new version (upgrade, no clean installs), after the new versions had been out a while. I struggle with command lines, updates, cups and other very cool tools that are only difficult because they have so many options. I'm Windows guy at work, a system admin and db administrator, plus the company expert on Excel. But, all in all, I hate Windows, and I'm loving Fedora, even if I struggle.

This last upgrade really kicked me in the pants. The first thing I noticed was all of my software sources were gone. I did some research around the forum and tried a few things, but it's still not working. Unfortunately, I may have uninstalled Yum in the process, but not rpm. I've tried to re-install the yum packages, but still no luck.

This morning before leaving for work I noticed that a boot log indicated that cups had failed. I went in to restart the service (through gui) and it said it was running. So I stopped the service and re-started. I tried to access port 631 through Firefox and it wouldn't open. I need to check the firewall to see if it's an open port, but beyond that I don't know.

Now I'm wondering if I should just do a clean install. I haven't done this, mainly because I didn't want to hassle with setting up my printer again (although, it's a Brother and they have the drivers and good instructions), and I didn't want to lose any emails that I've received via Thunderbird. The printer is really a non-issue now, as I'll have to set it up anyway. I have a backup of the /usr folder and all the documents. Question is, if I restore the Thunderbird folder after a clean install, would it bring back my email?
