Apr 27, 2011For a while now, I have been using an older version of gparted (0.4.5) from an older bootable Linux disk to format my hard drives. The version included with Suse 11.4 (0.8.0) has given me a puzzle. I tend to create a number of partitions (3 primary, an extended, and a number of logical) on my disks. For some reason, version 0.8.0 seems to requires 1 mb of space between each partition, and 2-3mb of space at the end of the drive. With the older gparted, I could create partitions with no unused disk allocation. Is there some reason for this new behavior? Is there some way to format a drive with the newer gparted without unused space? I realize that 10-15mb of disk is fairly small, but I have this dislike of wasted space. The drives being formatted are SATA drives in the range of 250gb -750gb.

Feb 18, 2010Why is there no Delete when I right click like there is with Windows in ubuntu? Pretty much everything else is there like new folder and so on Is there some way to add it? Also why when i delete something does it not ask me if I am sure that i want to delete that file?

Sep 20, 2010I am having a bit of an issue with xubuntu's resolution detection. I currently have a monitor plugged into my machine, the xubuntu machine picks up the native resolution of 1920x1080, but for some reason it does not give the option for 1366x768. i find this weird because any monitor that can do 1920x1080 should be able to do 1360x768 as well. The machine is running an intel card, so manual resolution changing via nvidia control panel isnt an option. Im wondering, what is the simplest way to enter a custom resolution into xorg.conf, or any other easy methods of adding the 1360x768 option into the machine?

Jan 4, 2010my ubuntu install is running pretty well, but I need to boot into Windows 7 to print and convert some proprietary OneNote files.The trouble is that while my menu.lst shows a Windows option - and a few others, too, that don't seem to show up in grub2 - grub does not give me the Windows option. In fact, it seems to follow only the contents of grub.cfg.I have tried running sudo update-grub, and it does work, but does not resolve the problem.

May 29, 2011I unplugged the Windows drive, during the installation of Ubuntu 9 (to make things easier). 2 separate drives. When installation was complete, I plugged the other drive back in (now both are plugged in). I went to the BIOS and made sure the Linux drive was the set to boot before the windows drive. The only thing that comes before that of course is the cd drive
CD-0
HDD-1 (linux)
HDD-0 (windows)
I booted into linux after this and ran 'sudo update-grub'. The cmd was successful. However, when rebooting it does not give me the option to boot to windows. Why not? PS. If I go to Places (under GNOME bar), Then I can see (and mount) the windows drive. So it is accessible.
Ubuntu :: GParted - Allocate All Of Space Only To W7 And One OS?
Mar 16, 2010I have a messed up system, or so I think. I have all sorts of partition issues that I just don't understand. I may have installed Ubuntu multipe times (GRUB show 5+ copys) along side my copy of W7. GParted show two Unused partition spaces, one massive on that it cant read completely (ntfs), a LinuxSwap, something called (ext4) and something called (extended).
What is going on? I recently deleted a virtual machine, but it looked like this even before this. How can I allocate all of my space only to W7 and one Ubuntu OS? Pic of GParted is attached.
Ubuntu :: Unallocated Space That Cannot Use (GParted)?
Feb 3, 2011I used to run Windows and Ubuntu side by side. I have removed Windows and only run Linux now. However, when I try to release the partitions for use with Linux, Gparted just doesn't give me the correct resize options. Have attached a file, so you can see my problem. I believe its because the /dev/sda4 drive is sandwiched between the two unallocated partitions, and I just have no option of resizing into those empty ones. I have tried formatting them, but it just won't play. Ignore the fact they have locked keys, I have been using the Live CD to boot, but this screenshot was taken from my normal login.

Apr 14, 2011I have accidentally deleted the first booting parition (Windows 7) with GParted, so then I immediately googled and found an utility testdisk which has successfully recovered the parition and it can boot and be seen from linux again. Only Exception is GParded, which sees an unallocated space on whole disk from this point!
I found this post [URL].. which looks like solution, but I can't figure he count a number of sectors 978726293. 500107862016 / 978726293 = 510.978263885 what is near to 512 (sector size), but not equal. So I don't understand the arithmetic.

General :: Unallocated Space In Gparted?
May 21, 2010Here's the problem (I'll give you a basic timeline of whats happened)
1) Installed Windows 7
2) Installed Ubuntu 10.4
3) Installed Linux Mint 9 Beta
4) Updated Linux Mint 9 Beta to RC and no longer had a need for Ubuntu 10.4
5) Booted into live cd and using Gparted, erased Ubuntu 10.4
6) Re-installed Grub
7) ATTEMPTED to resize Linux Mint 9 partition to use newly unallocated space
But whenever I try to regain that space it will only let it grow this much.Hopefully you can see that (took it with my iPhone 3gs, 3mp camera.)

Mar 15, 2011I have installed opensuse 11.4 couple of days ago. Installation went smoothly. Everything is working just fine except the screen resulation. My Monitor supports up to 1366*768. The Display Settings in 11.4 gives option of 1366*768, But whenever I maximize any window (say firefox, opera etc) I can not see the close button & scroll-bar. Here is my xorg file of monitor.

Ubuntu Installation :: Doesn't Give Option To Install Along Side Of Other OS
Oct 14, 2010I am installing ubuntu on a Dell m7750n machine that has the KSOD. I have done almost everything I can find to fix it. I was able to remove my data off of it using regedit....
So, I am sick of MS and found linux. I installed unbutu netbook on my netbook and it works like a charm.....
So, I went to install this on my desktop dell.... I have read of the many issue with this...
I was not able to boot from the CDlive as is. I kept getting a black screen with nothing. I then used the f6 to get into grub and then choose f6 to change the load options to load nomodeset and was able to load ubuntu from the drive, not install.
I would like to install ubuntu, but when I click on install from the 'tester' version it will not give me the option to install along side another OS (windows) that I see in the install ubuntu main website in the see how to do it.
I get two options:
Erase and use entire disk
Specify partitions manually (advanced)
Question: Can I install and select my own partitions using: [url]
Or, is there something wrong and I need to get that fixed before I install ubuntu?
Is this a DELL issue or KSOD issue?

Jun 2, 2010I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop last week. I had it dual-booted with Vista, but when it became apparent that I would be using Ubuntu much more than Vista from now on I wanted to resize my partitions. Originally, Vista was ~180 Gib with about 100 Gib of free space and Ubuntu was ~ 40 Gib with about 5 Gib of free space.So all in all there was ~105 Gib of free space on my system.When I tried to resize my partitions from the Ubuntu live CD, it bombed out after it had already resized the two main partitions. When I rebooted, Ubuntu loaded fine and Gparted now says that it is 120 Gib, which is right but there is still about 5 Gib of free space.The Vista partition only has ~28 Gib of free space, so now I only have ~33 Gib of free space

May 4, 2010I decided a few days ago it was time to reinstall ubuntu since Lucid looked fun and interesting. Everything went really well (my table functions even worked with no configuration!) until I decided I wanted to resize my linux partition so I could install a win 7 virtual machine. I had some issues getting gparted to let me expand my partitions into free space, so I started diking around with various settings commands and I managed to screw up my partition table badly enough that I needed to boot with the live cd. After a few hours in panicked trouble shooting mode, I finally got grub reinstalled and managed to boot things regularly. But now Gparted is completely nonfunctional; it shows the entire HD as unallocated and says "can't have partition outside of disk". Apparently one of my partitions is oversized.
Here's my output of fdisk -lu and sfdisk -d:

May 16, 2010I am trying to partition my unallocated part of the disc in my laptop in ubuntu 10.04 using Gparted.Here is a screenshot of my disk and its partitions:
when i select the unallocated space i can ONLY create a PRIMARY partition..the LOGICAL and EXTENDED ones are grayed out.. i want to partition this unallocated space in two or three parts, and it seems i only have one (out of the four) primary partitions left.. so i cannot create the partitions i want!

Jul 27, 2010I have on sda1 Windows 7 installed. On sda2 I have 3 sub partitions (extended partition) with Ubuntu 10.04 and a swap space and one partition for /usr/local. Now I tried to move space from sda2 to sda1 using gparted. It's not possible. I deallocated space from sda2 which works. But I cannot merge it with sda2. Is that, because sda2 is an extended partition? Is there a work around without killing all partitions and lose my complete data?

Oct 4, 2010A while ago I messed up my Ubuntu installation so I decided to boot the install from the disc again and overwrite it. It turns out the installation disc does not give you the option to replace a current Ubuntu installation so I was forced to take more space out of my windows [vista] installation. This means I now have 1 ruined Lucid Ubuntu OS, 1 Working Lucid Ubuntu OS and a windows Vista OS system. Is it safe to delete my ruined Ubuntu from inside vista? Is it possible to overwrite my Ubuntu installations? How can I delete them both and then install Lucid again?
I want to know this now as Maverick Meerkat will be released on Sunday and I want to install that in a clean installation without deleting my vista installation. I do not have the Vista installation disc because Vista came pre-installed. I am not willing to buy anything.

Dec 31, 2010Does Ubuntu 10.10 allow you to resize your windows partition and install ubuntu on the resized partition? I'm trying to get ubuntu installed on my laptop but the only option it's giving me is to delete all partitions and install ubuntu. I don't want to delete any partitions because I have backups on my second partition and the first partition has windows on it and I would like to keep it.
I've tried 10.04 and it doesn't give the option for resizing but I thought that one of the versions gives he option for this, is it 10.10? I've tried to manually resize but it won't let me because I have to many primary partitions, so I would have to delete the last partition to get it changed to extended correct?

Mar 22, 2011I have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.

Jun 16, 2010I installed a dual boot windows 7 and xubuntu and now decided that I would like to allocate more hard disk space to xubuntu. I've resized the windows partition (sda2 in the screenshot) and it is now the grey unallocated. I'm having trouble moving this unallocated space to the linux portion (sda5). I did my homework and found that this is done by booting off a live cd and using gparted from there, because you can't modify a partition that you're using. I also read that you had to turn swap off. I did both of these tasks, but as you can see from the attached screenshot, I am unable to resize the linux partition to fill the unallocated space.
Here's my "sudo fdisk -l" for reference:

Ubuntu Installation :: GParted Reports Disk As Unallocated Space
Dec 10, 2010Although I've seen several threads with the same problem, I have not managed to solve the problem. GParted identifies my /dev/sda as unallocated disk space! The machine a Dell Inspiron M101Z laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit + W7 64 bit. I wouldn't have discovered the problem until I decided to replace my 32 bit Ubuntu with the 64 bit version, then GParted from the live cd identified my drive as Unallocated space!
I've already tried to use testdisk to write the partition table, but though it writes the table successfully and then it prompts to reboot, GParted still sees it as Unallocated. I've also tried fdisk /dev/sda then p then w to write the partition table, but again GParted screws up for some reason and sees it as Unallocated.

Apr 9, 2010I use an atom based processor of 1.60 ghz on intel d945gclf board. My ram is a zion 1gb @ 533mhz. Hdd is from western digital 80gb @ 7200 rpm. I have a broadband(dsl) connection from bsnl dataone (a state owned telecom service provider). I connect to internet via a huawei wa1003a ethernet/usb/wireless modem which is provided by my service provider. I need a username and a password everytime i connect to internet via dial-up.
I was using windows xp service pack ii. It was nice and easy installing my modem on xp either via usb or ethernet. Both ways it was easy as i have both the drivers with me.Only and main problem was fighting viruses. I tried many free downloadable anti-virus software to protect my maching. Initially they were fine. But after few months they stopped taking regular updates and became non-functional. I also tried symantec corporate v.10. But it has its drawbacks also. It made my machine perform like a snail.I had previously heard about linux based operating systems. But never tried one. As i am an ameteur in using computers windows xp was suiting my needs. Recently i saw an article in the newspaper about ubuntu which is a free open source operating system. And most important to me it is virus free.But here is a problem also. I cannot connect to internet. My ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala is not identifying my modem and a network between my modem and my machine cannot be established. Also i cannot create a dial-up option where i can give username and password.
