I just performed an update thru the Update Manager, & on re-boot got this message: ( Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-24-386 ) udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured. Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems :
- Boot args ( cat /proc/cmdline )
- Check root delay= ( did the system wait long enough? )
- Check root= ( did the system wait for the right device? )
- missing modules ( cat /proc/modules; ls /dev )
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/df0200e3-e6e9-439a-922f-100d92af0c58 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!. BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built in shell (ash) (initramfs)_ Info: I can boot into older version: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-23-386. The Update Manager does not seem to want to show any updates that are available.

I'm having a bit of a nightmare with my ubuntu hardy server (using hardware raid 1+0). Following a power cut I get the message "udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured" on boot. Before the power cut the server had been up for ~450 days.
I managed to get access to /boot (which was empty) by using the repair option on the alternate cd and mounting /dev/myserver/root. I've installed the packages linux-headers-server, linux-image-server and linux-server. The various 2.6.24-29 files were installed and update-initramfs was automatically run (I noticed others have used update-initramfs to solve this error when upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 in some posts I've read). No luck with this though - just the same error booting. I've also tried reinstalling udev, but again with no success.
I rebooted and pressed the Esc key to get the boot menu up. Only options were for kernel 2.6.24-26 (rather than the 2.6.24-29 just installed). I ran the recovery option anyway and got "/dev/mapper/myserver-root does not exist".

Noticed this on boot up the other day, but it doesn't seem to have a negative effect. Everything appears to be running just fine.
"Triggering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger --type=failed"
Is this something that needs to be resolved or ignored?

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome. When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.

I am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 to my laptop, currently I have 10.10 installed and working. When I try to boot the computer from USB for installation, I get (after waiting a few minutes):
[Code]...
I am currently using windows 7 and ubuntu as dual boot. I didnt have this problem when I was installing 10.10. I am not sure but I think I upgraded my BIOS after my 10.10 installation, so that might be related. I didnt change anything else related to hardware since.
I am not sure what other information I should provide, Also note that given error message might not be 100% correct as I have typed it from a photo.

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 on my Eee PC 901 (the one that has 2 SSD's). It all went fine, and I ran the update manager straight after install and config. It installed the updates (all 198 of them!) without error. I was prompted to restart, so I did. I got the error "udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured". I found out that this error is well documented, and I followed the guide at [url](apparently it affects all variants, not just UNE).
It went O.K., until I tried the command "sudo chroot /media/newroot". I got the error that "cannot run command '/bind/bash': no such file or directory". What should I do?
I cannot boot into and earlier kernel (problem/current one is 2.6.35-23-generic) I can only fix it via live USB stick.

I am trying to create a jailed shell for a user Don($UID '500') using my own method(I don't want to use any ready-made "jailkit"). The user don should get a home directory /jail/don instead of /home/don when he login via SSH (So that he will not able to see any other files/directories on the system)
This is what I have done.
Quote:
Code:
It works without any issue ....Home directory changes to /jail/don when I ssh to the system as user don. ie: #ssh don@192.168.0.66
Then I added a chroot command to this code.
Code:
Unfortunately , now I am getting an error message saying that "chroot: cannot change root directory to /jail: Operation not permitted" .. I am not sure how to rectify this error... Is my approach correct to get a jailed shell using /etc/profile file ?

I have a laptop set up for dual-boot with Ubuntu and Win7. I also have a shared partition which I mounted as the /home directory in Ubuntu. The problem occurred as I was upgrading Ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04. In the middle of the install, my computer froze for some reason and ultimately I had to shut the computer off and restart. When I restarted the linux would freeze half-way through boot-up with a message saying that the drive was mounted. Before the message saying the drive is not mounted it gave the following error: Can not read 'etc/udev_rule.d/z80_user.rules'
When I boot up Win7 it is unable to mount the shared partition and says that the drive is not formatted. I am also unable to run the ubuntu recovery option from GRUB. It asks me to give the "root password for maintenance," but it won't accept my root password. Would the upgrade have wiped my partition??? Or am I just locked out somehow because it was in the process of changing config files?

After running 9.04 for a year, I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and then to 10.04 using Update Manager. My Dell computer crashed several times during the upgrade to 10.04. I restarted each time from a recovery version of 10.04, and eventually the upgrade was completed. As far as I can tell after a few days, everything I normally use seems to be working. However, when I add a package with Synaptic I get the error message below. Is the message significant? Do I need to address each error?

I am developing a java application that deals with the parallel port I used the parport library, I have the following problem: I am using netbeans 6.9 and linux redhat, when I run the code (java code that controls parallel port) from netbeans I get: "ioperm error: Operation not permitted" I used the "clean and build" function in Netbeans to create the jar file (test.jar) then I changed the permission of the test.jar to root using this command "chmod 4777 test.jar" and the test.jar file worked just fine as a stand alone file, but I still get the same error message when I try to run the program from Netbeans

I am trying to install a third party driver and the provided makefile makes a call to insmod. Whenever I try to install this I run "su", so I am root and should have permissions. However, when I run "make install" I get the following output:
Code:
# make install
Unloading any instances of foo module
Loading new foo into running kernel
insmod: error inserting 'foo.ko': -1 Operation not permitted
make: *** [install] Error 1
Like I said before, I'm doing this as root, so I don't see how this is possible. Additionally, every time I try to do this it seems to cause a lot of damage to whatever kernel I'm currently booted in; USB and ethernet (and hence the Internet) stop working and I have to wipe the kernel and reinstall it.

I have no iptables rules set.
How can I get this working?

I Installed Ubuntu 9.10 yesterday on a new machine. I started the update manager before I went to bed, (over 300mb's of updates) This morning the computer was unresponsive to get the monitor to come out of sleep. Was forced to power down. I imagine it was at a point of configuring one of the first updates. Now when I try to boot this is what I get......
udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
udevadm settle is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
svgalib: cannot open /dev/mem.
how to go about configuring?

This is happening on multiple machines. My udev version is 153. I don't think this is a permissioning issue because I've tried playing around with the udev rules/

I tried to install OpenSuse 11.3 on my brand new pc, which already had Windows 7 proffessional in it, and I went step by step through the installation without changing anything. It didn't work. I tried for a second time and this error message kept popping up: "Creating device modes with udev 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected broken BIOS with 262140/2644kb of video memory stolen. 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Disabling GEM(try reducing stolen memory or updating the BIOS to fix)"
And then a lot of letters and numbers wich make no sense to me. Now the only way I can initiate OpenSuse is with the OSuse boot dvd and on failsafe mode.

So, I recently installed, or.. ermm.. Tried to install Ubuntu 11.04, I did it with a CD. This is about my 4th time around with Ubuntu, so I'm not completely new to it. But, I used to have Windows 7 on here, and I decided I wanted to go with Ubuntu, so I downloaded and burned the CD, and did all the stuff you need to do to install Ubuntu. I got far into the installation, and then the installer crashed saying something about an Input/Output error, and it could be the CD being dirty or damaged.
Now, I'm stuck with a broken operating system because I chose to replace my Windows 7 partion with Ubuntu, and there's no terminal! Everything else seems to be here, it's just really buggy, and I can't get much of anything installed.

Here's what happened- I accidentally changed permissions after getting a virus. I then tried to do a system restore and during that process the computer crashed. When I try to boot to windows in every possible mode, I am always left with the dreaded blue screen of death.
