Ubuntu Installation :: Boot After Updates - Udevadm Trigger Is Not Permitted While Udev Is Unconfigured

I just performed an update thru the Update Manager, & on re-boot got this message: ( Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-24-386 ) udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured. Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems :
- Boot args ( cat /proc/cmdline )
- Check root delay= ( did the system wait long enough? )
- Check root= ( did the system wait for the right device? )
- missing modules ( cat /proc/modules; ls /dev )
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/df0200e3-e6e9-439a-922f-100d92af0c58 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!. BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built in shell (ash) (initramfs)_ Info: I can boot into older version: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-23-386. The Update Manager does not seem to want to show any updates that are available.

I use Parallels 5 for Mac (10.6.4). I started my Ubuntu 10.4 virtual machine and it didn't load the Ubuntu Gnome desktop. In stead I did get a command line prompt. I could login with normal username and password, rebooted again, but same result.I tried to update the system with code...

I was updating the security updates in my deskptop. It did not executed successfully even after 7 hours. It remain just like hang up. So I switched off the PC and rebooted. Then it is showing the error: "udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured. Gave up waiting for root device."
Now my Lucid Linx is almost dead. There is also no 'Repair' option while booting from Ubuntu 10.04 CD. Pl help to restore it.

I'm having a bit of a nightmare with my ubuntu hardy server (using hardware raid 1+0). Following a power cut I get the message "udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured" on boot. Before the power cut the server had been up for ~450 days.
I managed to get access to /boot (which was empty) by using the repair option on the alternate cd and mounting /dev/myserver/root. I've installed the packages linux-headers-server, linux-image-server and linux-server. The various 2.6.24-29 files were installed and update-initramfs was automatically run (I noticed others have used update-initramfs to solve this error when upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 in some posts I've read). No luck with this though - just the same error booting. I've also tried reinstalling udev, but again with no success.
I rebooted and pressed the Esc key to get the boot menu up. Only options were for kernel 2.6.24-26 (rather than the 2.6.24-29 just installed). I ran the recovery option anyway and got "/dev/mapper/myserver-root does not exist".

when I update the ubuntu, I set it shutdown after 60 minutes uisng "sudo shutdown 60",because I think the update will complete in 40 minute. However today when I start the computer, it can not startup the ubuntu. I got a screen which sown the message in the title,after I search it using google, some people have encounted this proble, their solve way is to use a live cd to chroot to the old root and complete the update.

Noticed this on boot up the other day, but it doesn't seem to have a negative effect. Everything appears to be running just fine.
"Triggering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger --type=failed"
Is this something that needs to be resolved or ignored?

I Installed Ubuntu 9.10 yesterday on a new machine. I started the update manager before I went to bed, (over 300mb's of updates) This morning the computer was unresponsive to get the monitor to come out of sleep. Was forced to power down. I imagine it was at a point of configuring one of the first updates. Now when I try to boot this is what I get......
udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
udevadm settle is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
svgalib: cannot open /dev/mem.
how to go about configuring?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 on my Eee PC 901 (the one that has 2 SSD's). It all went fine, and I ran the update manager straight after install and config. It installed the updates (all 198 of them!) without error. I was prompted to restart, so I did. I got the error "udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured". I found out that this error is well documented, and I followed the guide at [url](apparently it affects all variants, not just UNE).
It went O.K., until I tried the command "sudo chroot /media/newroot". I got the error that "cannot run command '/bind/bash': no such file or directory". What should I do?
I cannot boot into and earlier kernel (problem/current one is 2.6.35-23-generic) I can only fix it via live USB stick.

This morning I had the courage to run an apt-get autoremove which took some 275 packages off my hard drive, and now I am experiencing a delay of about 40 seconds at boot, after grub, before the plymouth splash appears. The cursor blinks on a black screen while the hard drive churns away. Finally two error messages appear too quickly to be read, and then the bootsplash kicks in. I can find the instant in the dmesg where the delay happens, but can't locate the cause. Here's what my dmesg looks like:

The laptop is an Acer Timeline X 3820TG, with the dual GPU "switchable graphics." These dual graphics cards have given me enough trouble in the past that I wouldn't be surprised if they were the problem. But the hard drive action sounds like a 'fsck,' and seems to be contemporaneous with the dmesg notice that the root partition is mounted.
Incidentally, my boot wasn't all that fast before; I would not be surprised if this delay was preexisting, but used to happen after the plymouth boot screen was already on screen. Still, if I can get rid of this one ugly delay, I can have a fast (c. 10 secs) boot time.

Now I can't continue upgrading because every time it tries to finish the previous update and fails to process udev.
I don't know if it's relevant, but while upgrading udev for the first time, my laptop switched to tty1 on its own. When I switched it back to graphic subsystem, it still was in process of upgrading udev or systemd and after all failed to finish.

I am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 to my laptop, currently I have 10.10 installed and working. When I try to boot the computer from USB for installation, I get (after waiting a few minutes):

I am currently using windows 7 and ubuntu as dual boot. I didnt have this problem when I was installing 10.10. I am not sure but I think I upgraded my BIOS after my 10.10 installation, so that might be related. I didnt change anything else related to hardware since.
I am not sure what other information I should provide, Also note that given error message might not be 100% correct as I have typed it from a photo.

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.
System specs:
Motherboard: MSI P45 Platinum
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Video Card: Radeon HD4850
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Patriot

I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

After running 9.04 for a year, I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and then to 10.04 using Update Manager. My Dell computer crashed several times during the upgrade to 10.04. I restarted each time from a recovery version of 10.04, and eventually the upgrade was completed. As far as I can tell after a few days, everything I normally use seems to be working. However, when I add a package with Synaptic I get the error message below. Is the message significant? Do I need to address each error?

Ive poked around the forums a bit and cant see anything that addresses this. I have a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Netbook remix on an Acer Aspire one. (From a couple of hours ago.) It was able to boot all the way up once. Now after a restart it hangs after selecting Ubuntu from the GRUB menu. If I launch using Recovery mode it gets to a line 2.302026 ata4: Dummy and then hangs. I can boot with the live CD and access the partition that ubuntu is on. I can also boot into windows 7 starter (Blech) from the grub menu. (It is a relatives netbookThey want to try Ubuntu but keep W7 intact.)
I am at a loss of what to do, I would like to simply re-install it again to replace whatever did not get setup right, but I think it will just make a new partition and get really messy.

I have an alienware m17 with an Ati graphics card. I was able to log on and install all current updates as well as the card driver update where I was then prompted to restart. Upon doing so, I get the grub loading plus splash screen. My screen then goes blank followed by a noise in my laptop. I have tried nomodeset as well as taking out splash nothing has worked. Also, upon booting up I get lucky if I can get into Recovery mode.

I'm currently running Karmic 9.10 in dual boot with Windows 2000. My computer has automatically updated and installed kernels 2.6.31-17, -19 and -20 (They show up in Synaptic as installed).
However, the newest kernel choice in my GRUB menu is 2.6.31-16-generic (followed by -15 and -14). These all start without any errors.
Question: Why haven't the newer updates shown up in GRUB for booting purposes?
Could it be a question that I didn't answer correctly some time back about accepting or not accepting an update or change in GRUB?
How can this be changed? The new kernels do not show up in Start-Up Manager either.

I've installed Lubuntu alongside my existing Windows XP installation. The menu came up on boot allowing me to boot into either Lubuntu or XP. But, after I install all the Lubuntu updates and restart, the option to boot into XP is gone. The boot menu comes up, but no XP option. I reinstalled Lubuntu again with the same results: after the updates, no XP option. I'm thinking I will reinstall Lubuntu again, and before I run the updates, I will make a copy of grub.cfg for later reference so I can add the XP section in again- am I on the right track here?

I recently installed ubuntu(32-bit 10.04) alongside windows 7 in my hp laptop(64-bit).When i installed all the updates available and restarted, a blank screen came after i chose to boot ubuntu.On pressing the power button, ubuntu closing animation appeared & it shut down.Is it because of my hardware drivers not supporting some updates.Do I have to re-install ubuntu..if yes, how do i remove it?..is deleting the ubuntu partion ok..how should i know which updates can be installed..also, are there any problems in running 32-bit version on a 64-bit laptop?

I have installed ubuntu 10.04 64 bit in April and it has worked flawlessly. However, today I ws prompted to install Kernel updates. Now when I try to boot it continually cycles between a black screen and the NVIDIA logo.
Yes I have been using the nvidia drivers previously but without incident till now.
I have tried crtl-alt-f1 but this does not stop the cycling.

I updated my lucid alpha testing (64 bit)install after which I am unable to boot into any of my Ubuntu installs(sda11 has a dedicated Burg partition and sda10 has the stable karmic (32 bit)install and sda9 has the testing lucid install) Now I am trying to recover (rewrite Burg or at least grub2 on the MBR) my installs

In Ubuntu 910 on my Asus EEE-PC1005HA, I notice that during boot, when the screen is dark between the plain Ubuntu logo and the animated purple screen, there is a brief message:udev[488] cannot read file (rest of message goes by too fast for me)This doesn't seem to hurt anything. My system has been working just fine for a long time. I don't know how long the message has been there. Perhaps it merely lengthens boot time? Should I care? If I should care, where might the message be logged (so that I don't have to photograph the screen)?

I'm writing for my brother who was running Karmic on a Microtel desktop.He'd been having trouble with blank cds (data cds and dvds didn't cause this problem) crashing his box so he uninstalled and then installed udev package.Now when he tries to boot the box goes into a memory test and then reboots into the memory test over and over. He tried to check the installed kernels to choose one that might boot but there are none listed (he pressed "esc" to see the list-it's empty).He tried booting from a live cd and that won't work either. The cd drive spins but nothing else.

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

During the boot process the machine (Fujitsu Celsius M470) hangs about 4 min at udev:loading drivers. After that it continues and I can work with the OpenSuse 11.2 system without problems.I activated the debug log in /etc/udev/udev.confthen I see that it is doing a lot in that time, at the end I see the message:udevadm settle timeout queue contains: a long list of pci/usb entries (no entries in any log for this)

I am trying to make gentoo boot faster and in my searching I came across this article http://lwn.net/Articles/299483/. One of the things they did was revert to a "persistent, old-school /dev directory so that boot doesn't depend on udev". I would like to know how to do this, but when I searched for disabling udev all the forums say that its a bad idea. All I want to know is how to make a static /dev directory.

I've been having problems with start_udev on my machine post kernel 2.6.18-162 on my CentOS machine. A previous install would work on the old kernelut not the newer ones. I recently did a completely fresh install of CentOS 5.5o see if maybe there was a orruption in my install when it upgraded,t I still have the problem of udev hanging on startup.Using the rescue option on the disk, I've managed to track the problem down to the 50-udev.rules file. Through trial and error, I moved all the .rules files out of the rules.d directory, and added them back one at a time to see which one(s) caused the system to hang, and which ones it carried on booting as normal with. The only one that causes it to hang is the 50-udev.rules.
From what I can tell, this rules file is responsible for letting udev check various pieces of hardware. I think that it is failing whent runs modprobe on a pci device address.Only problem is I don't understand the rules file syntax, so I don't know if I can simply comment out or change a line in this file to skip the device that its looking for.Can anybody help me track down the specific device/line that is doing this?(I've kept the file out of the folder for now and my system appears to continue operating, but I get the occasional problem that for all I know could be due to udev not having a complete start up).

I have done a fresh text-only installation of Fedora 10 on a Dell Dimension E521 for the purpose of setting up a server. After installation I ran yum update to bring the system up to date. After the update, I rebooted the computer, but the boot process froze. I recycled power and pressed "I" after the Dell BIOS screen and the GRUB bootloader appeared. I selected the most current version, edited the kernel line by deleting "rhgb quiet" and replacing it with "3." After making this change, I continued with the boot and the computer stopped at "Starting udev:" I have two fedora 10 revisions showing in the GRUB bootloader, the original installation and the update after running yum.
I repeatedly tried rebooting both versions and, after about 30 attempts, the computer finished booting and got me to the command prompt. Reading through the forums indicated there might be some issue with my nVidia GeForce 6150 onboard video and fedora 10. So, when I got to the command prompt, I followed the instructions in the forums [URL] to load the rpmfusion drivers. This appeared to be successful and when I looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf it appeared to be correct for the new nVidia drivers. After loading these new drivers I tried rebooting. Unfortunately, I have been trying now over and over to get back to the command prompt, but simply can't get past "Starting udev."
