Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Go Higher Then 9.04

Apr 13, 2010

I have tried numerous times to upgrade to 9.10, different .iso's, different methods (update manager vs. live CD, fresh install) on my Dell Dimension 2350 desktop. Every single time there is a screen freeze after awhile. Hard boot, repeat, etc. The screen will remain visible, but it will become completely non-responsive. Eventually I sigh and reload 9.04, which has aways worked perfectly on this computer (after loading the restricted-extras of course).

I have also recently tried the beta 2 of 10.04, hoping that was just a Karmic problem I had. Again I tried it by doing the update method (yes, going to 9.10 first then to 10.04, long day!) and a fresh install. I was pleased at first, but as soon as I could smile... crash!. The monitor flicks, goes black, then shuts down (the green "on" light will turn to amber, on but off). The CPU light remains green, but of course all I could do is press the button to shut down the computer.

I have never filed a bug report before, but will do that if needed. I read the "directions" to filing bugs (in Absolute Beginners Talk) and and it says to be sure this bug is not already filed. Hm, if I have not filed one before how am I supposed to know the answer to that?!?

BTW I had 9.10, plus now I have 10.04 running on my Dell Inspirion 1550 laptop with no problem at all. In fact 10.04 has been on that computer since Alpha 3.

Do I need a different driver? What and where can I check this?

Fedora Installation :: Higher Resolution On I845G With 22" Monitor?

Apr 13, 2009

I have just installed Fedora 10 and all went well except that the resolution is set to 1024x768, which is not cool on a 22" HP w2207h LCD monitor. When I bring up Monitor Resolution Setting the Mirror Screens is checked and 1024x768 is the highest resolution. If I uncheck Mirror Screens and select "Laptop" I am able to select 1680x1050, but it now has my desktop in the upper left hand corner of my monitor. Should I be looking for a driver for my i845G graphics processor?

PS: I am new to using Linux please be patient with my ignorance.

Ubuntu Installation :: Plymouth Load Screen Producing Video Artifacts On Higher Resolutions

May 1, 2010

I have a problem with Plymouth. It works pretty well on low res, but on higher resolution some strange video artefacts appear - see attachments.

I use ATI proprietary drivers, if it has something to do with it.

The resolution is set in /etc/default/grub like this:

Code:
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768x32
edit: reducing colour depth doesn't help /end edit

I don't know whether it has anything to do with the current problem, but Plymouth used not to appear at all until I followed these instructions (or actually I took them from another thread but I can't find it at the moment and these are the same).

I don't know whether it's possible to take them during booting so I've taken these photos with a mobile and retouched in gimp to remove reflections (more or less), and since I'm no pro photographer nor photoshop/gimp master they look as they look. They should do to demonstrate the problem, though.

Ubuntu :: Resolution Cant Get Higher 640x480.

Jan 2, 2010

My Ubuntu can not go any higher then 640x480. I have found out what the problem is. The monitor has broken down (firmware or some thing) but still works fine in Windows. How do i know this ? Well a few mouths ago i was on Windows Me and one day it booted up saying that it is installing a default driver for the screen , so i let it do and after it did that it would never use the VA702 driver. Also the resolution could get higher then 1280x1024(this is the screens biggest res). A other mouth later i installed Windows XP and when using it i tried to install the VA702 driver but it did not work so i had to manually install it which worked but did not get correct resolutions e.g. could go higher than the monitor is meant to go. Now in Ubuntu can't go higher then 640x480. How can i fix this ?

One of these contains the driver files and the other a xorg.conf file.

Ubuntu :: Installing 10.04 And Higher With Windows 7

i currently use a toshiba A200 with 2.0 core duo processor, and an I 945 chipset. since the laptop is quite old now, i am planning to buy another toshiba. since i want an ultraportable, i have narrowed down on the nice satellite T235 or the much acclaimed portege R700. now these laptops are being shipped with windows 7 OS. installed a dual boot option of 10.04 in any of these computers ? i had tried quite some time ago to do a dual boot in a compaq. however, there was some problem with the boot loader and i although ubuntu installed nicely, i was simply unable to get the system to boot up ! so is there a compatibility issue with 10.04 and later versions on the one hand and and windown 7 on the other ?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Adding Higher Resolutions To 9.10

Feb 8, 2010

I'm trying to add a higher resolution to my system. I've tried to edit xorg.conf but I think I'm wrong. Everytime I edit and reboot, it tells me I need to run in low graphics mode for now. Now I'm trying 'xrandr.' I was able to create a new mode just fine, but when I try to add it to the appropriate output, I get this:

Code:
prog@ubuntu:~$ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 1280x1024_50.00

Here's what xrandr returns:
Code:

I don't know why it puts it in TV1. There's two of them because I tried two different refresh rates.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Fix Higher Screen Resolution?

Mar 3, 2010

I am having a major problem in a new Karmic install. Big rationalisation. Kicked out a lot of machines in favour of Virtual machines. Installed Karmic. Machine has dual 22" wide screen monitors, max res 1680 x 1050. Karmic installed at maximum 800 x 600 and will not go above that. I have looked for xorg.conf and cannot find one anywhere. I have tried the randr as shown by Sharaq but when I try to set the higher resolution it gives message saying maximum size is 800 x 600. I have downloaded the proprietory drivers from Radeon and tried to run them. The installer runs but I cannot get to the 'Continue' button because it is off the bottom of my screen so I cannot set up the drivers. I suspect I am going to have the same problem with the Lucid install I did yesterday. Earlier releases never gave me this issue so why now?
Why is the initial resolution so low?

Ubuntu :: Lost The Higher Resolutions For Computer?

Apr 30, 2010

I lost the higher resolutions for my computer. The highest available is 1360x768 (which doesn't work well) and currently I'm using 1024x768. Before, I had 1280x1024 working well and I even had higher resolutions available in nvidia-settings. I've ubuntu 9.10 with nvidia drivers (185.18.36).

I've read [URL].. but not necessarily all of it or understood all of it. I've tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and the xrandr stuff but nothing has changed, except what xrandr reports, regarding the addition of two modelines 1280x1024. In the end, I suppose something has corrupted some file but how can I figure it out?

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1024x768 50.0*
800x600 51.0 52.0 53.0

Ubuntu :: No Support To Set Higher Screen Resolution?

May 7, 2010

I have been on Ubuntu for a total of about 1 hour now, as I have finally made the switch from Windows. So far so good, but I do have some learning to do. First off, when I got Ubuntu 10.04 installed, everything worked great! Video lagged a little however. No biggy. The next time I booted up, it asked if I wanted to install video card drivers. I thought this is why my video was lagging, so I said yes. It then automatically installed my nvidia card drivers.

Then when I rebooted, I was greeted with a 640x480 screen resolution. When I go to System->Preferences->Monitors, I am given a warning that says: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics drivers vendor's tool instead?"

Regardless if I hit "yes" or "no" I am brought to windows that should allow me to change resolutions. However, the only resolutions I can choose are 640x480 and 320x240. I know my "monitor" can support higher resolutions as I was running it at higher resolutions before the switch to Ubuntu. (I put monitor in quotes, as I am using a large rear projection T.V. as my monitor). How I can get a higher resolution?

Ubuntu :: Higher System Load Average After 9.10 To 10.04 Upgrade

May 7, 2010

A server of mine previously running ubuntu 9.10 used to be between 0.01 and 0.10 load average during the normal load of users using various server programs on it (mostly apache with php scripts).

Now, after upgrading to 10.04 (which went smoothly for the most part), the load average is much greater under the same user workload, hovering between 0.1 and 0.3 under very light work and up to and over 1 regularly when more users are accessing the same scripts.

Are there any known issues that would cause greater usage of the same resources in lucid, or are there any ways I can trace what's causing the higher load? Downgrading or starting with a fresh install are last resorts, as there are a lot of customized options specifically set up for this server and I'd rather not go through backing them all up and restoring them after a complete wipe.

I wonder if it is possible to increase the number of steps to make the volume change not so big per step. Now I have one step which is a bit too loud, and one step lower is not loud enough.
