Debian :: Loading A Module From The Init Process?
Dec 6, 2010recently I've updated my kernel, i had to reconfigure some stuff, in particular, the b43 module is not loading at init process, my question is: what command should I use to load it from the init? or what file should I hagve to edit?

Apr 13, 2010I have tried numerous times to upgrade to 9.10, different .iso's, different methods (update manager vs. live CD, fresh install) on my Dell Dimension 2350 desktop. Every single time there is a screen freeze after awhile. Hard boot, repeat, etc. The screen will remain visible, but it will become completely non-responsive. Eventually I sigh and reload 9.04, which has aways worked perfectly on this computer (after loading the restricted-extras of course).
I have also recently tried the beta 2 of 10.04, hoping that was just a Karmic problem I had. Again I tried it by doing the update method (yes, going to 9.10 first then to 10.04, long day!) and a fresh install. I was pleased at first, but as soon as I could smile... crash!. The monitor flicks, goes black, then shuts down (the green "on" light will turn to amber, on but off). The CPU light remains green, but of course all I could do is press the button to shut down the computer.
I have never filed a bug report before, but will do that if needed. I read the "directions" to filing bugs (in Absolute Beginners Talk) and and it says to be sure this bug is not already filed. Hm, if I have not filed one before how am I supposed to know the answer to that?!?
BTW I had 9.10, plus now I have 10.04 running on my Dell Inspirion 1550 laptop with no problem at all. In fact 10.04 has been on that computer since Alpha 3.

Jan 1, 2011I've been dual booting 10.10 with Windows7 for about a month. Today is the first time I've encountered a serious problem.
This morning, nothing functioned properly after trying to open several programs. The computer seemed to be "frozen", although the mouse was working fine.
I decided to reboot, but then encountered an even bigger problem.
It failed to boot and got this message: no init found. try passing init= bootarg
The problem now is that it requires a Live CD session and I keep getting this: GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
In case it matters, I didn't install 10.10 from an ISO, I just upgraded from 10.04.

Jan 20, 2010Ubuntu 9.10 will not boot! System froze this morning, I restarted and it is now failing to boot. Starts loading grub and I get this message:
mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/04aa3697-7bc0-45b5-b86a-77a1e6534bd5 on /root failed: invalid argument
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /dev on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory

I booted with 9.04 LiveCD discovered the drive could not be mounted-ran fsck -ln and it told me the drive has no valid partition table. I have had intermittent problems mounting flash drives before this, so I'm kind of worried it might be a hardware issue.Also have files on that drive I would rather not lose, so reinstalling is hopefully a last resort.

Oct 20, 2010i used to use ubuntu 9.04 on my lap compaq 515, it worked well. But on upgrading to the higher versions(9.10, 10.04) the system failed to boot. Whenever i tried to install, the laptop would freeze and just show a blank screen. The Configuration of my system is below
Processor-AMD Athlon X2 64-bit
RAM- 1.7Gb
HDD- 150Gb
Graphics Card-ATI Radeon 3200 HD Graphics (256MB)
Is the problem actually with the operating system?. Does the new versions of ubuntu support this configuration or not?

I need to remove Ubuntu 10.04 and so I therefore need to remove sda5 and sda6, right? Upon deleting sda5 in Gparted it tells me to "unmount any logical partitions having a number higher than 5".

Jun 2, 2011after installing Natty on my brand new shuttle with Intel's Sandy Bridge Core i5 (2500K), everything works fine except setting up a higher resolution fitting to my screen.All I need is a 2048x1152 resolution, but all the display configuration in the hardware section of the system settings offers is 1024x768, 800x600, 848x480 or 640x480.The monitor is connected via VGA since it doesn't have a DVI or HDMI plug.Is there a way to tell the system there is more capability? Do I need a different driver? What and where can I check this?

Apr 13, 2009I have just installed Fedora 10 and all went well except that the resolution is set to 1024x768, which is not cool on a 22" HP w2207h LCD monitor. When I bring up Monitor Resolution Setting the Mirror Screens is checked and 1024x768 is the highest resolution. If I uncheck Mirror Screens and select "Laptop" I am able to select 1680x1050, but it now has my desktop in the upper left hand corner of my monitor. Should I be looking for a driver for my i845G graphics processor?
PS: I am new to using Linux please be patient with my ignorance.

May 1, 2010I have a problem with Plymouth. It works pretty well on low res, but on higher resolution some strange video artefacts appear - see attachments.
I use ATI proprietary drivers, if it has something to do with it.
The resolution is set in /etc/default/grub like this:

edit: reducing colour depth doesn't help /end edit
I don't know whether it has anything to do with the current problem, but Plymouth used not to appear at all until I followed these instructions (or actually I took them from another thread but I can't find it at the moment and these are the same).
I don't know whether it's possible to take them during booting so I've taken these photos with a mobile and retouched in gimp to remove reflections (more or less), and since I'm no pro photographer nor photoshop/gimp master they look as they look. They should do to demonstrate the problem, though.
Fedora Installation :: Switch To A Higher Screen Resolution Now The Menus Are Missing?
Apr 30, 2010I have fedora 12 and I tried to change the screen resolution under the system menu to a higher one and it changed but now I dont have any menus and I'm not sure if I can use quick keys to go back to the display preferences to reset the screen resolution. Is there anyway I could run the display preferences by running a command in the bash shell or is there a quick key that allows menu access.

Jan 31, 2011While I was using my computer a few days ago, the terminal stopped working properly, so I tried to reboot, and when it started up again it wouldn't boot and said "no init found. try passing init=bootarg"
This has happened twice before, so I really need to figure out what keeps happening, otherwise I can't continue to use linux. i reinstalled both times before. i think that this is caused by a process that prevents me from using the hard drive, because when I try to check the disk in the terminal or in gparted, it says Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1. Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?
Also, in the disk utility, in the lower right corner of the filesystem it has a spinning "loading wheel".(i'm not sure if that means anything)
I am using ubuntu 10.10, but am not sure what kernel I am using, but i tried a few different kernel options(there's three of them at start up). safe mode does not work either.

Apr 19, 2011Im am building a Linux distro. It will be very tiny and fast.
I only have a minimal linuxkernel (bzImage) who is 1,2 mb big. And then I have Busybox who is 174,6 kb big.
The commands in busybox is: cd, ls, mkdir, rmdir, wget, httpd, clear, rm, poweroff, halt, reboot, fdisk, mount, umount, free, and cp.
When I compiled the kernel i use initramfs/initrd function and point it to a folder where initrd/initramfs source is.
The kernel works OK with others initramfs/initrd files. But not with my own.

I then try to use:
make -f makefile.linux
sudo make -f makefile.linux install
And I get:

I dl both files and extracted them in the download folder with the tar files.

Apr 29, 2010I currently run 9.10 and have / and /home mounted on different partitions. From what I understand, I can do a fresh install of 10.04 on / while preserving my settings on /home. What about the development tools? I currently have Apache web server, Tomcat, MySQL, PostgreSQL installed. I presume I will have to reinstall them if I do a fresh install right? So if I want to preserve these dev tools as they are I should only do an upgrade from the update manager? Are there any major advantages to a clean install over an upgrade?

Got this error when I tried hash checking, was downloading the file using rtorrent when there was a sudden powercut and my system shutdown abruptly, tried restarting the torrent and kept encountering problems while restarting.
Ubuntu Installation :: Gnome Init Freezes In 9.10 On New Intel DH55TC
Jan 13, 2010I just purchased a new Intel DH55TC motherboard, a Core i5-661 processor, a WD Caviar Green 640GB drive, and a Linksys WMP110 card. I was able to successfully install 9.10, but every time it loads to the desktop it freezes. It seems like it may be an ACPI problem with the built-in H55 graphics card on the CPU. I hit 'e' at the grub prompt, and added 'noacpi' to the end of both the kernel (or linux?) line and the initrd line. WHen I did that, I was able to get to a point that it was fully loaded and I could move the mouse around, but as soon as I opened a menu, like 'Applications', the desktop froze again.
(NOTE: I have today's daily 10.04 on a USB, and will try that next as a live disk)
Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Find /sbin/init, Drops To Busybox
Sep 9, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 i386 on a K9M6PGM-2 mainboard with an AMD Phenom Triple core @ 2.3 gig. I have 2 gig of RAM and Lucid is on a 320 gig HDD, /dev/sda1 shared w/Win XP. I have in the SDC position an 80 gig with Ubuntu Karmic. Long before the Widows was installed this problem annoyed me. My hope was that by wiping GRUB out and rebuilding it from the Live CD that this problem would be fixed but after several boot process' the problem ihas returned.
When I boot into Karmic and look at /sbin I find the file init but of course cannot open it. Is there any way to fix this?
The nachine might boot into Lucid 3 or 4 days in a row with no problem and then refuse to boot anything but WinXP or Karmic. It seems not to be the GRUB as Wendoze and Karmic boot as expected.
At the /dev/sdb I find;
