I have an old Pentium III 600mHz 512mb RAM pc currently running XP & would like to try to resurrect it as a usable pc running Ubuntu or a variant.After trying the main website & despite searching the forums (although not every page of the 3k that turned up), I can't find recommended processor specs anywhere other than Wikipedia.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been thinking of turning my old computer into a media center for a while now (it was running Ubuntu Server 9.10). I recently bought a new 23inch screen so.. out with the server, in with the media center! (currently Xubuntu but running on LXDE as it's a lot lighter) My problem: The computer barely manages to play 720p videos on XBMC (on ..... or totem/vlc it's just impossible with breaks, lag and constant freezes).. I used the debug function of XBMC and guess what.. a 720p movie takes my cpu to a constant 100% usage!! =X
So here's my question.. what distro or 'buntu flavor would you advise me to use?? I thought about a minimal install but don't want to try it just yet..

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed amarok in ubuntu karmic, I had to set the proxy settings for wikipedia and lyrics plugin to work , for that I had to edit the file .kde/share/config/kioslaverc , but now the problem is , that lyrics aren't being displayed although wikipedia and photos for the artist are being displayed. Whenever it starts playing a song, it just shows the usual message "lyrics are being fetched" for a couple of seconds and then nothing is displayed, I don't think anything is wrong with my proxy settings as wikipedia and photos plugin are working fine. Do I need some kde dependency for lyrics to work ?

Reason I ask is that almost every time I upgraded to a new version by using the update-manager and than later installed that new Ubuntu version on another computer from scratch, I noticed that there are some differences. For example let's say the new version promoted a new UI design or some default apps have been replaced. These changes have not been applied to the upgraded version.
I am running a very stable F13 on my little box and I was thinking to upgrade from F13 directly to F15 using the preupgrade-cli tool. Is this recommended, or should I go to F14 first? I would like to skip that step:
The F13 is my home server with a lot of services:
- IMAP (dovecot)
- Postfix
- Postgresql
- apache (tons of php)
- vmware workstation 7.1.4
- dhcpd
- named
- samba
- squid
I am worried that the upgrade will break something. I spent a lot of time setting these things up.

For that processor, on FC 12 64 bit
cat /proc/cpuinfo
shows:
cpu MHz : 1000.000
for each processor.
Is that supposed to "add up" to 2000 MHz for both? My old GA-K8N-Ultra SLI motherboard has its BIOS set for "top performance", so I hesitate increase any clock speed or multiplier.

I got an old laptop from my brother, it has ubuntu 6 on it right now. The computer is real old, complete with a windows 95 and pentium II sticker on it. i downloaded the amd ubuntu 9.10 into my computer, and used the usb maker utility in the system menu. i put in in my new pc (it was given to me), and i tell it to boot into the usb.
